7th Mules vs. Brownfield (9-14-2017)

The seventh-grade Mules opened their first football season Thursday afternoon and shutout the visiting Brownfield Cubs 20-0.

The Mules kicked off to start the game. Frankie Reyes picked off a Cub pass at the Mule 48-yard line. The Mules could not convert the turnover into points. But the Mule defense stepped up and held the Cubs the balance of the first quarter.

The Cubs completed a pass on first down, but Davian McMullen made the tackle for a one-yard loss. The Cubs attempted a run to the right, but Davian Ragsdale made the tackle after a one-yard gain.

The Cubs made a reception, but McMullen was there to make the stop five-yards short of a first down to end the first quarter. A high snap on fourth down sailed over the punter’s head, and Frankie Reyes was there for the tackle.

The Mules took over on downs at the Cub 15. On the second play of the drive, Irvin Torres passed to Noah Deleon for a 15-yard touchdown with 4:59 remaining in the first half. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but the Mules led 6-0.

The Mules kicked off, and Elisar Cisneros raced downfield to make the tackle at the Cub 34. Reyes, F. Torres, and Kyle Hernandez made one tackle each to hold the Cubs short of a first down.

The Mules took over on downs at the Cub 38. A holding penalty set the Mules back 10 yards. But a pass from I. Torres to Deleon was good for 22 yards and a first down. I. Torres kept wide left for six yards. Reyes carried up the middle for 10 yards and a first down at the 10-yard line.

Cisneros fired a strike to Deleon for a 10-yard touchdown with 20 seconds left in the first half. The two-point conversion failed, and the Mules led 12-0 at the intermission.

The Cubs kicked off to begin the third quarter. Judas Reyes returned 10 yards to the Mule 39. The Mules began their march to the Cub end zone for the final time. The drive took nine plays and consumed most of the third period.

F. Reyes carried wide left for nine yards. I. Torres kept the ball on a run to the right and cut upfield for six yards and a first down. F. Reyes completed a throw to Uriel Vasquez for five yards. F. Reyes scooted wide left for 28 yards to the Cub 14.

F. Reyes kept wide right for 13 yards. He again called his number and kept up the middle for a one-yard touchdown with 29 seconds left in the third quarter. I. Torres kept wide left for the two-point conversion and a 20-0 Mule lead over the Cubs.

The Mules shut down the ensuing Cub drive at the Mule 32 and exhausted the clock for the Mules first win.


The Mules will host the Childress Bobcats Thursday.
