8th Mules vs. Shallowater

The eighth-grade Mules put up
a battle against the Shallowater Mustangs Thursday evening in Muleshoe’s Benny
Douglas Stadium. The Mules could slow down the Mustangs but could not score.
The Mustangs defeated the
Mules 30-0.
Shallowater returned the
opening kickoff to midfield. The Mules jumped offside twice early in the
Mustang drive. Evan Lopez and Jacob Reyes made the stop on first down for a
two-yard loss. The Mustangs scored on a 20-yard run for an 8-0 lead with four
minutes left in the first period.
Juan Zacarias returned the
ensuing kickoff nine yards to the Mule 42. Zacarias ran up the middle for nine
yards. Three plays later the Mules fumbled, and Shallowater recovered on the
Mustang 14.
It took the Mustangs 10-plays
to drive the length of the field and score with four minutes left in the first
half. The Mustangs led the Mules 16-0.
Jeremiah Barron returned the
Shallowater kickoff 12 yards to the Mule 40-yard line. Shallowater intercepted
a Mule pass, and a block in the back penalty set the Mustangs back to the
Mustang 38.
Lopez and Alexis Alvidrez
sacked the Mustang quarterback on first down. Shallowater reached the Mule 48
before Jacob Reyes blasted into the Mustang backfield for a two-yard loss.
A personal foul penalty
backed the Mustangs up 15 yards, and a holding call cost Shallowater 10-more
yards to the Shallowater 25. Time expired in the half with Shallowater leading
the Mules 16-0.
Neither team could mount a
scoring drive in the third period.
Shallowater recovered a Mule
fumble as the third period drew to a close at the Shallowater 37.
The Mustangs drove down the
field and scored on a one-yard dive with 5:28 left in the game. Shallowater led
the Mules 24-0.
The Mules fumbled the
Shallowater kickoff at the Mule 45. It to the Mustangs six plays to score the
final points of the game.
The Mules will hit the hardwoods
Monday to prepare for their basketball season.
