8th Mules vs.
Kermit (9-25-2014)
The eighth grade Mules
dominated the Kermit Yellow Jackets in the first half and rolled up 32 points.
The Mules then cruised to a 32-0 win over Kermit Thursday evening.
The Mules kicked off to start
the game and stopped the Yellow Jackets short of a first down. The Mules took
over on downs at the Kermit 31-yard line.
Brenden Mehl scrambled for 10
yards on first down. Jorge Albarran carried up the middle for a 10-yard pickup.
Mehl then connected with Yoel Reyes for a 19-yard touchdown. Albarran blasted
through the left side of the line for the two-point conversion. The Mules led
8-0 with 5:39 left in the first quarter.
Kermit started their second
drive on the Yellow Jacket 31. Matthew Olivas made the tackle at midfield. Rudy
Ruiz and Reyes teamed up to stop Kermit for no gain on first down. Jaime Vidana
pressured the Kermit quarterback into throwing an incomplete pass.
Kermit had fourth down and 10
yards needed for a first down and chose to pass. Josh Torres tipped the ball
away from the intended receiver and Vidana scooped it up before the ball hit
the turf and raced 65 yards for a defensive touchdown.
Mehl hit Izaiah Hurtado in
the end zone for the two-point conversion and a 16-0 Mule lead with 2:33
remaining in the opening period.
Kermit marched to the Yellow
Jacket 46 following the Mule kickoff. Ruiz made the tackle for no gain on first
down. Leonel Camarena got off a block and made the tackle for a two-yard loss
to end the first quarter.
Olivas pressured the Kermit
quarterback for an incomplete pass on third down. Kermit punted and Mehl
returned the ball five yards to the Mule 27.
The Mules were backed up to
the Mule 20 with a holding penalty. Mehl tossed a screen pass to Albarran and
he raced 80 yards around the right end for a touchdown. Mehl and Reyes hooked
up for the two-point conversion that extended the Mule lead to 24-0 with seven
minutes left in the first period.
Kermit drove to mid field
after the ensuing Mule kickoff. The Mules intercepted a Yellow Jacket pass at
the Mule 35. A holding penalty backed the Mules up to the 25. A screen pass
from Mehl to Albarran gained 21 yards.
Mehl kept up the middle for
another 21 yards to the Kermit 34. Rodriguez took a pass from Mehl wide around
the left side and skipped his way through tackles for 17 yards.
Mehl found Hurtado open in
the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown. Rodriguez caught Mehl’s two-point
conversion pass for the final points of the game. The Mules led 32-0 with 3:25
remaining in the second quarter.
Neither team could find pay
dirt in the second half.
Ryan Rodriguez led the Mule
offense in rushing with 75 yards, Brenden Mehl rushed for 36 yards and Izaiah
Hurtado carried for 16 yards. Jorge Albarran led the Mules in receiving with
101 yards and a touchdown.
Yoel Reyes had 23 yards
receiving and a touchdown. Ryan Rodriguez had receptions for 21 yards. Hurtado
had a 16 yard touchdown reception. Brenden Mehl threw for 161 yards and three
touchdowns.
Josh Torres led the Mule
defense with four tackles, Rudy Ruiz made three stops and Moises Vasquez and
Brenden Mehl made two each. Yoel Reyes and Jaime Vidana each made and interception.
The Mules will host the
Abernathy Antelopes Thursday in Benny Douglas Stadium at 6:15 PM.
