8th Mules vs.
Childress (10-22-15)
A blocking in the back
penalty cost the eighth grade Mules an early touchdown against the Childress
Bobcats. The game turned into a defensive battle after that in the first half
with neither team scoring.
But the Mules got it done in
the second half to improve to 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in district by
defeating the Bobcats 14-6.
Nathan Rodriguez and Jose Cardenas
muscled their way in to the Bobcat backfield for a tackle that cost Childress
six yards on the first play of the second half. Eddie Vasquez and Hector Arras
made the stop to force a Bobcat punt that rolled dead on the Childress 48.
Damian Juarez kept and went
right for six yards and on second down he carried for four yards up the middle.
Juarez connected with Matthew Alarcon over the middle for a 36-yard touchdown
for a 6-0 Mule lead with 4:35 remaining in the third period.
The Bobcats utilized the
razzle-dazzle of a double-pass play to score a 31-yard TD to tie the game at
6-6 with 4:23 left in the game.
After the Bobcat kickoff it
only took the Mules three plays to score the winning touchdown. Juarez hit
Arras running a slant over the middle for 11 yards. Juarez then tossed a
15-yard bomb to Alarcon at the Childress 48. Alarcon raced to the end zone for
a 67-yard score.
Juarez added the two-point
conversion with a quarterback draw up the middle to give the Mules a 14-6
advantage with 2:55 left in the game.
The Bobcats got close to a
score but Christian Bustillos made the stop on fourth down to force Childress
to give up the ball on downs.
The Mules gained a first down
on a 16-yard run by Juarez before he took two Victory Knees to drain the clock
of all the time.
The Mules will travel to
Dimmitt Thursday to battle the Bobcats and return home for their final game
against the Littlefield Wildcats.
