JV Mules vs. Childress (9-15-2016)
The JV Mules struggled in the first half against the Childress
Bobcats Thursday in Benny Douglas Stadium. The Mules trailed 28-0 at the
intermission and gave up a fifth unanswered touchdown a minute and a
half into the third quarter.
The Mules scored twice in the third quarter but ran out of gas. Childress added one more score to defeat the Mules 42-14.
After scoring early in the third quarter the Bobcats kicked off to
the Mule 21. Justin Carrion returned the ball 19 yards to the Mule 40.
Luke Del Toro tossed to JoJo Rejino on first down. Rejino pushed and
pulled Bobcats for first down at midfield.
Ryan Rodriguez blasted up the middle for eight yards. Del Toro
tossed a screen pass to Brady Martinez. Using his blockers Martinez
scooted for 11 yards to the Bobcat 31. Rodriguez pounded up the middle
for six yards.
Del Toro made a pitch right to Rodriguez and he scooted 14 yards
for a first down at the Childress 11-yard line. Two plays later Del Toro
kept the ball and went up the middle for the final four yards for a
touchdown with 5:16 remaining in the third period.
Del Toro pitched right to Corbin Hardwick for the two-point conversion. The Mules trailed 8-35.
The Mules attempted an onside kick but the Bobcats covered the ball
on the Childress 45. Two plays into the Bobcat drive Raul Sierra picked
off a pass at the Mule 30-yard line.
A roughing the passer gave the Mules a first down at the Mule 45.
Rodriguez carried wide right for five yards. Del Toro called his own
number and went wide right and dragged a tackler to the Childress 43.
Del Toro dropped straight back and made the throw to Sergio Solano.
Solano scooted to the end zone for a 43-yard pass and run with two
minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Mules trailed 14-35.
The Bobcats added one more score with just over eight minutes left in the ball game.
Del Toro completed 12 of 28 passing attempts for 170 yards and one
touchdown. He rushed five times for 25 yards. Rodriguez carried 15 times
for 96 yards and Hardwick rushed three times for 18 yards.
Solano made three receptions for 67 yards and one score. Martinez
caught four passes for 46 yards and Rejino made four catches for 34
yards. The Mules had a total of 311 yards of offense.
Josh Torres made five tackles and had one sack. Hardwick had five
stops and Sierra made four tackles. Rejino finished with seven tackles
and Jacob Kettner made five tackles.
The Mules will travel to Idalou Thursday evening to play the Wildcats immediately after the freshmen game.
