7th Mules vs.
Olton (10-5-2017)
The seventh-grade Mules
kicked off their season two weeks later than the high school teams and had a
game scheduled with the Olton Mustangs during the open week. The young Mules
battled the full 24 minutes to defeat the Olton 16-12.
The Mules kicked off to start
the game, and Matt Vargas raced downfield to make an open field tackle after
just a seven-yard return to the Olton 29. Nic Reyes made pushed Olton back a
yard on first down.
Uriel Ramirez sniffed out the
screen pass and made the stop after a two-yard gain. N. Reyes blitzed into the
Mustang backfield to set Olton back five yards and force the Mustangs to punt.
U. Vasquez received the punt
at the Olton 45 and returned the ball 21 yards to the Mustang 24.
The Mules lost seven yards on
first down. Irvin Torres spotted Noah Deleon coming open on a down-and-out
pattern for an 18-yard gain and a first and goal at the 10-yard line. A high
snap followed by a chop block penalty shoved the Mules back to Olton 29.
Frankie Reyes bubbled back
for a screen pass, and Torres delivered him the ball. Deleon made a block to
open a way for F. Reyes to gain 19 yards. Torres took the deep snap and stepped
back to sell the pass before pulling down the ball and racing up the middle for
a touchdown with 51 seconds left in the opening period.
F. Reyes blasted up the
middle for the two-point conversion to give the Mules an 8-0 lead.
F. Reyes kicked off to the
Olton 23 U. Vasquez made his second special teams’ tackle after only allowing a
three-yard return.
The Mustangs fumbled on first
down, and Ed Lopez recovered the football at the Olton 25. The Mules failed to
convert the turnover and gave the ball back to the Mustangs on downs as the
second period got underway.
The Mustangs scored on a
13-yard pass with 23 seconds left in the first half. The Mules stopped the
Mustang two-point conversion attempt short of the goal line. The Mules led 8-6
at the intermission.
Olton kicked off to start the
second half, and Judas Reyes returned five yards to the Mule 28. Torres kept
wide right and scooted 31 yards. F. Reyes took a handoff wide left for 21 yards
to the Mustang 18. A facemask penalty advanced the Mules half the distance to
the goal line.
Torres connected with Deleon.
Deleon reached the one-yard line before being shoved out of bounds. Torres
sneaked up the middle for the Mules’ second touchdown with 2:34 remaining in
the third quarter.
F. Reyes found a hole up the
middle for the two-point conversion to give the Mules a 16-6 advantage.
A short punt resulted in an
Olton touchdown with 2:47 left in the game. F. Reyes stopped the two-point
conversion attempt and ended all scoring.
