Mules vs. Tulia & Abernathy 1-7 & 10
The Mules cranked up the heat in Tulia last Tuesday night and dominated the
Hornets. The Mule full court pressure held Tulia to just two points in the first
period and a total of seven points in the first half. The Mules cruised to a
50-31 win on the road.
The Mules returned home on Friday to host the league leading and number
three state ranked Abernathy Antelopes. The Antelopes appeared to have brought
their own officiating crew to the game.
The Mules put up a battle to the best of their ability in the first half
and trailed 37-18 at the intermission. Not much changed at the half and
Abernathy left Muleshoe with a 70-37 win.
Nacho Elizalde broke the scoring ice in Tulia with 5:48 left in the first
period to put the Mules on top. Blaine Hurtado drained a trey from the top of
the key and Matt Barron penetrated and scored two baskets. Dagen Dunham put back
an offensive rebound for a bucket.
Tulia finally scored a basket with 1:16 left in the first period. The Mules
led 11-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Dunham got hot in the second period and made three hoops. Blayne Shipman
and Eli Leal made a basket each and Grey Johnson and Barron made a free throw
each. Hurtado made both ends of a one-and-bonus foul and chipped in a basket.
The Mule defense held the Hornets to five points and led Tulia 27-7.
The Hornets third quarter was their best of the night. The pumped in 15
points during the eight minute quarter. The Mules continued to be steady in
their scoring as they finished the third period with 11 points. Austin Ross cut
to the hoop and got the feed from Leal with 7:44 showing on the clock.
Barron hit a 3-pointer and Shipman was four of five free throws. Elizalde
made a pair of free throws and Jason Flores chipped in a free throw. The Mules
led 38-22 with eight minutes left to play.
Danny Campos and Barron made two baskets each and Leal and Florez chipped
in a pair of free throws each.
All the Mules scored during the game and Barron led the way with 12 points.
Dunham made eight points and Hurtado finished with seven points. Shipman scored
five points, Campos, Leal and Elizalde added four points each. All three of
Florez points were from the charity line, Ross made two points and Johnson
chipped in a point.
Matt Barron also led the Mules with 13 points against Abernathy and Leal
dropped in 10 points. Dunham scored three points, Shipman, Campos, Ross, Hurtado
and Florez made two points each. Elizalde chipped in a free throw in the
loss.
The Mules traveled to Whitharral Tuesday to play the Panthers in a
non-district game. Friday the Mules return home to host the Friona
Chieftains.
