Mule Baseball @ Tulia (3-2-2018)
The Mule baseball team was down to just nine players
when they played for consolation in the Tulia Wooden Bat Tournament. A two-day
Canyon track meet left the Mules with the bare minimum of players.
The Mules lost their opening game but came back to
win their second game Friday evening to set up the Consolation game against the
Lubbock Trinity Christian Lions. Trinity went home with the Consolation plaque
and a 13-1 win over the Mules.
Riley Kettner struck out the first batter he faced
with a vicious curveball. Kettner lost
his rabbit's foot after that and Trinity
scored four runs before the final out.
The Mules changed pitchers but still gave up five
runs that included a three-run home run. The Mules trailed 9-0 after two
innings.
Kelan Florez and the Mules shut out Trinity in the
third inning. The first batter was called out for attempting to run over Moises
Vasquez, the Mule catcher, rather than sliding home. The runner was also tossed
from the game.
A second player was called out and tossed from the
game after taking a called strike. Vasquez easily threw out a Trinity runner at
third base. Vasquez fired a strike to JoJo Rejino at third, and he applied the tag.
Matthew DeLeon came in early in the fourth inning to
again shut out Trinity. The first batter drew a walk before DeLeon took the
mound. Derek Barron scooped up the second batter’s ground ball and fired to
Leonel Camarena at first base for the first out of the inning.
DeLeon set the next batter on strikes. He walked the
next batter but threw him out attempting to steal second base.
The Mules converted an error by the Trinity
shortstop to a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Vasquez sent a ground
ball up the middle, and the shortstop booted
the ball for an error. Vasquez stole second base.
Florez sent a high fly to short right centerfield
that was allowed to drop for a base hit. Vasquez went to third base on the
play. Vasquez scored on a wild pitch for the Mules only run.
The Mules played the Tulia Hornets Tuesday
afternoon. The Mules will host the Dimmitt Bobcats Saturday at noon.
