9th Mules vs. Lubbock

The freshmen Mules biggest
problem this season has been in scheduling opponents. The Dimmitt Bobcats, like
most of District 1-3A Division I teams, do not field a freshmen squad. The
Mules played host to the Lubbock Roosevelt freshmen Eagles Thursday evening.
The Mules were not kind to
their guest and rolled over the Eagles 48-0.
The Mule defense held
Roosevelt to just 16 yards of offense in the first half. While the Mules only
ran seven offensive plays in the first half for 269 yards, five touchdowns and
36 points. The Mules led the Eagles 36-0 at the intermission.
A running clock in the second
half shortened the game.
The Mules kicked off to start
the game. Rocky Martinez set the Mule defensive tone for the evening by pushing
the Eagles back six yards on first down. Roosevelt was forced to punt on fourth
down and it was allowed to roll dead on the Mule 32.
A blocking in the back
penalty was called on the Mules and backed them up 10 yards to wipe out the
play. Ryan Rodriguez took a pitch wide right, turned the corner and hit the
jets for a 74-yard touchdown with just over seven minutes left in the opening
quarter. Izaiah Hurtado took the snap and scooted wide right for the two-point
conversion that put the Mules up 8-0.
Jamie Vidana booted the ball
down field to the Eagle 18 on the kickoff. Adrian Bustillos and Brady Martinez
raced down field to make the tackle at the Roosevelt 34.
Yoel Reyes shot into the
Eagle backfield to make the tackle for a six-yard loss on first down. Jose
Quintana chased down the Eagle quarterback for no gain to force another Eagle
punt that rolled dead on the Mule 49.
It was one-play-all-the-way
for the Mules with Luke Del Toro tossing to R. Martinez at the Roosevelt 36
running a slant over the middle. Martinez raced to the end zone for a 51-yard
TD.
Del Toro tossed to Reyes in
the end zone but he could not haul the ball in but all was not lost. The tipped
ball fell into the hands of R. Martinez for the two-point conversion and a 16-0
Mule lead.
The Eagles drove 20 yards
before running out of gas at the Roosevelt 46. Roosevelt faked a punt and threw
an incomplete pass on fourth down and the Mules took over on downs.
A screen pass from Hurtado to
Reyes went 46 yards for a touchdown with just over one minute remaining in the
first period. Rodriguez blasted up the middle for the two-point conversion and
a 24-0 Mule lead.
R. Martinez and Quintana made
tackles and Reyes broke up a pass to halt the first Roosevelt drive of the
second period. The Eagle punt rolled out of bounds at the Mule 46.
Rodriguez gained five yards
on a draw up the middle for the Mule’s fourth offensive play of the game. He
then took a pitch around the right side for a 41-yard TD to put the Mules up
30-0 with eight minutes left in the second period.
R. Martinez and Nathan Wilton
made tackles on the first three plays of the ensuing Eagle drive. The Eagles
punt on fourth down rolled out of bounds on the Mule 48.
Hurtado hung onto the ball
for a 16-yard gain. He rolled left on the next play, reversed his field and
raced 36 yards for a touchdown to increase the Mule lead to 36-0 with 2:33
remaining in the first half.
R. Martinez returned the
third period Eagle kickoff 27 yards to the Mule 48. Del Toro made a screen pass
to B. Martinez and he scooted 52-yards for a touchdown that ended all scoring
with 8:37 left in the third period.
The clock was allowed to run
almost continuously for the final 20 minutes of the game.
Ryan Rodriguez lead all
rushers with 114 yards and Izaiah Hurtado ran for 65 yards. Brady Martinez was
the Mules leading receiver with 62 yards. Brady Martinez caught passes for 51
yards and Yoel Reyes had receptions for a total of 46 yards.
Rigo Mendoza, Yoel Reyes and
Jose Quintana led the Mule defense in tackles.
Thursday’s opponent for the
Mules was still questionable at press time.
