8th Lady Mules @ Lady Mule Tourny (1-30 & 2-1)

The eighth grade Lady Mules took no prisoners in their quest for the Championship Plaque of their own tournament. They plowed through the Littlefield Lady Cats 35-6 in the opening round. 

The Trinity Christian Lady Lions were no match for the Lady Mules and went down to defeat 40-17. The Nazareth Swiftettes did not get run out of the gym by the Lady Mules but were defeated 37-25 in the championship game. 

The Lady Mules jumped on the Littlefield Lady Cats early to take a 12-1 lead in the first period. The Lady Mules backed off on the scoring in the second period and only put four points on the board but only gave up two to lead the Lady Cats 16-3 at the half

Conley Niblett led the charge for the Lady Mules in the first half with four baskets and two free throws for 10 points. 

The Lady kept the heat on the Littlefield and out scored the Lady Cats 17-3 in the second half. 

Niblett led the Lady Mules in scoring with 16 points and Yvonne Diaz added 10 points. Lili Barrera dropped in four points, Noa Rojas made three points and Melody Moran chipped in two. 

Niblett led off against the Trinity Lions with the first three hoops. Diaz scored after the Lions had made their first basket. Brianna Barron scored on a baseline jump shot on an in bound play and was fouled. She converted the free throw to give the Lady Mules an 11-2 first quarter lead. 

The Lady Mules poured in 14 points in the second period and gave up seven to lead the Lions 25-9 at the half. The second half was more of the same by the Lady Mules. 

Niblett again led the Lady Mules in scoring with 16 points Barrera and Diaz added seven points each. Rojas had four points, Barron and Moran dropped three points each and Brianna Velasquez chipped in two points. 

The championship game pitted the best two teams in the tournament against one another. Nazareth scored first but Barron got Barrera the ball on the blocks for a short shot to tie the game.  Diaz scored on an in bound play to briefly put the Lady Mules in front 4-2. 

The Swiftettes made a trey but Niblett hit a free throw to tie the game. Nazareth made a free throw to take a 6-5 lead to end the first period. 

Barron stole the ball and got the ball to Niblett for a fast break hoop. Barrera passed to Niblett on the blocks for a turn-around jump shot. The next trip down the floor Barrera again fed the ball to Niblett for a hoop. Nazareth hit a trey to climb back in the game. Niblett fed the ball to Diaz for a short shot and a 13-9 Lady Mule lead. 

The Swiftettes made a basket before Barrera drove the right side for a lay up to end the half with the Lady Mules leading 15-11. 

Nazareth cut the Lady Mule lead to 16-15 early in the third period but then the Lady Mules took over the game and finished the third period with a 27-17 lead. The Lady Mules managed to extend their lead to 12 points by the final buzzer. 

Niblett finished the game with 13 points and Diaz added nine points. Barron dropped in seven points and Barrera had six points. Velasquez chipped in two points. 

The Lady Mules went on the road to Littlefield to close out their season against the Lady Cats. The Lady Mules scored eight points in each of the first three quarters and 10 in the final period to defeat the Lady Cats 34-19. 

“We went on the road to end our season in Littlefield with a win,” said Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “These girls had an awesome season with only one loss. Yvonne Diaz and Conley Niblett gave them trouble on offense and they could not shut down either one of them.”

“Hallie Myatt did a great job of taking care of the ball and running our offense. This has been a fun season and have loved working with such an energetic and competitive group. Every member of this team contributed to make the season a success.”

Yvonne Diaz led the Lady Mules in scoring with 12 points and Conley Niblett added 11 points. Lili Barrera finished with five points, Barron made four and Cassidy Cage chipped in two points. 

The B-Team 1 Lady Mules defeated the Littlefield Lady Cats 16-12. 

“We ended our season with a very exciting game,” said Coach Niblett. Littlefield made a come back in the fourth quarter but our girls were able to hang on for the win. This group has been fun to work with and I appreciate all their hard work to help make their season successful.”  

Madison Lutz and Ricarda Elizalde led the Lady Mules in scoring with four points each. Laura Chavez, Maddison Price, Haley Hunt and Nancy Martinez scored two points each. 

The seventh grade Lady Mules downed the Littlefield Lady Cats 34-13 to finish their season at 13-4. The Lady Mules jumped in front early by out scoring the Lady Cats 12-5 in the first period and continue to add to their lead in every quarter. 

“These girls have really shown great improvement this year,” said Lady Mule coach Jalissa King. “The first time we played Littlefield we only won by three points. The second time we played them we only won by seven points. To come out our last game and beat Littlefield by 21 points shows how far they have come. What a great way to end our season.”

The B-Team 2 Lady Mules held Littlefield scoreless in the first half and allowed only four points in the second half. The Lady Mules defeated the Lady Cats 32-4. 

“Every girl contributed to the win with steals, rebounds or points,” said Coach King. “This team has really improved this year. The last time we played Littlefield at the beginning of the season we lost by six points. As the score show this game was significantly different.” 

Leading the Lady Mules in scoring was Liliana Martinez with eight points. Alexis Campos, Ab Mendoza and Sophie Reyna added four points each in the win.

The Muleshoe Powerlifting team were in Levelland Saturday for a meet. Four lifters brought home medals and the team finished tenth. Four Muleshoe lifters brought home medals from the meet.

“All our lifters improved at this meet,” said Muleshoe Powerlifting coach Kirk Byrd. “We have one meet for the boys and one for the girls remaining for them to qualify for the regional meet. Currently David Rodriguez, Evan Paez and Katelyn Gable have a chance to qualify but anything can happen with just one meet left.”

The remaining girls meet is scheduled for February 15 in Andrews. The boys will have their final meet at Friona February 22.

Evan Paez led the team with a fourth place medal in the 114 pound class. He had a squat lift of 220 pounds and bench pressed 130 pounds. E Paez had a dead lift of 170 pounds for a total weight of 520 pounds. 

David Rodriguez brought home a fourth place medal in the 275 pound class. He had a squat lift of 475 pounds and from his back he bench pressed 300 pounds. Rodriguez finished the meet with a dead lift of 480 pounds for a total of 1255 pounds. 

Aimee Rosas won a fifth place medal with a total weight of 545 pounds in the 132 pound. She squat lifted 190 pounds and bench pressed 100 pounds. A Rosas had a dead lift of 255 pounds. 

Carlos Martinez rounded out the Muleshoe medal winners with the fifth place medal in the 220 pound weight class. He had a squat lift of 425 pounds and bench pressed 215 pounds. Martinez reached a total of 1080 pounds with a dead lift of 440 pounds. 

Cristian Paez was just out of the medals in the 148 pound weight class with a total of 895 pounds for sixth place. He had a squat lift of 315 pounds and bench pressed 195 pounds. C Paez had a dead lift of 385 pounds. 

Jorge Martinez placed seventh in the 181 pound class. He started with a squat lift of 315 pounds and then bench pressed 190 pounds. Martinez finished with a dead lift of 400 pounds for a total weight of 905 pounds. 

Krystin Gonzales finished eighth in the 114 pound class with a total of 465 pounds. She squat lifted 175 pounds and bench pressed 90 pounds. Gonzales finished with a dead lift of 465 pounds. 

Jordan Russell placed ninth in the 275 weight class. He squat lifted 380 pounds and bench pressed 215 pounds. He had a dead lift of 450 pounds for a total of 1045 pounds. Nate Rosas finished eleventh in the 165 pound weight class with a total of 830 pounds. He had a squat lift of 310 pounds and bench pressed 170 pounds N Rosas closed his competition with a dead lift of 350 pounds. 

Raul Trevino was thirteenth in the 148 pound weight class. He had a squat lift of 275 pounds and bench pressed 160 pounds. Trevino’s dead lift of 305 pounds gave him a total weight of 740 pounds. Dominik Hasley finished seventeenth in the 165 pound weight class. He had squat lift of 250 pounds and bench pressed 110 pounds. Hasley’s 300 pound dead lift gave him a total of 660 pounds.

Dagen Dunham hit a turn-around jump shot early in the Mules game in Abernathy against the Lopes and put the Mules ahead. In fact the Mules continued to lead through the first four minutes of the game with Eli Leal going on a quick scoring rampage for three driving hoops. 

Then the whistles began to be heard and Dunham had to go to the bench with two fouls quick fouls. Matt Barron and Danny Campos each scored before the period ended. Abernathy finally took the lead and led 16-14 after one period. Abernathy went on to a 62-42 win over the Mules. 

The Mules continued to battle through the second period with Dunham getting an early basket. Jason Florez made a free throw and finished the half with a fast break. Leal mad a free throw before converting an old-fashion 3-point play. He finished the half with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. The Lopes had built a 38-26 lead at the intermission. 

The second half was not a good one for the Mules. 

Leal led the Mules with 23 points and he made three treys. Dunham finished with eight points and Florez scored five. Barron, Campos and Shipman chipped in two points each. 

The Mules filled their open district date with a practice game against the Whitharral Panthers. The much smaller Panthers were no match for the bigger and faster Mules. 

Dunham got a lob pass from Nacho Elizalde over the Panther defense. Dunham kissed the ball off the glass for the first two points of the game. The Mules never trailed in the game. Dunham put back a rebound on the Mules next trip down the floor. 

Barron led Elizalde with a pass down the floor for a fast-break hoop. Elizalde was fouled on drove from the left side and he made one free throw for a 7-0 Mule lead just two minutes into the game. 

Whitharral hit a trey before Leal drove the baseline and dished to Elizalde for the open shot from eight feet. Dunham put back his own shot before the Panthers made another hoop. Blaine Hurtado drove the baseline for a lay up and Florez grabbed a loose ball at mid court and drove for a lay up. The Mules led 15-5 after one period. 

Leal picked off a Panther pass and drove the floor for a hoop. Panther made a free throw. Dunham blocked a Panther shot and Elizalde drove the floor and was fouled. He made both free throws for a 19-6 Mule lead. 

Dunham cleaned the offensive board and put the ball up and in the hoop. Whitharral made their second trey. Elizalde drove the baseline for a hoop and Barron stole the in bound pass and found Leal for an easy hoop. Barron made a second steal and drove the floor for a 27-9 Mule lead.

Dunham cleared the offensive boards and scored before Barron scored on a fast break. Florez tipped a Panther pass and drove the floor. He missed his lay up but Leal was there for the put back. 

Hurtado was fouled shooting and made both free throws. Florez finished the half with a steal and drove the floor. The ball fell through the hoop with one second on the clock. The Mules had built a 37-9 lead at the intermission. 

The second half was more of the same for the Mules as they out score the Panthers 18-12 in the third period and 20-8 in the last quarter. 

Hurtado set the scoring pace for the Mules with 15 points and Elizalde added 13 points. Dunham and Barron round out the Mules in double digits with 12 points each. Leal dropped in eight points and Campos scored all seven of his points in the third period. Florez finished with six points and Shipman chipped in two points. 

The Mules completed their district schedule on the road in Friona against the Chieftains Tuesday evening. The Mules will finish no worse than third in the district and will advance to the post season.

The JV Mules scrapped their way back from a 15-point deficit after three quarters to fall one point short of a win. Back-to-back last second fouls were called on the Mules and allowed the Abernathy Lopes creep in front of the Mules. 

The Mules were leading by two points and Abernathy missed a shot from point blank range and the Mules grabbed the rebound when the first foul was called. Only one free throw was good but the Lopes grabbed the rebound and missed the put-back attempt and again the Mules had the rebound when the whistle blew. 

Tony Castillo broke the ice for the Mules with a free throw to start the final period. He made two more baskets and a free throw before the period ended. Roman Franco made a charity toss and converted a second free throw to complete an old-fashion 3-point play before he fouled out. 

Kevin Mendoza hit a bucket and Triston Boehning chipped in a free throw. JJ Gandara made two treys as the Mules pumped in 19 points and take the lead before the final two fouls were called on the Mules as time was running out. 

The Mules scored two minutes into the first period with Castillo scoring a hoop. He added a second hoop before the period ended. Antonio Vasquez drained a 3-pointer and later chipped in a free throw. Boehning made a free throw and Gandara finished a fast break. The Mules led 11-9 after one quarter. 

The Mules duplicated their 11-point performance in the second period but Abernathy scored 17 to lead the Mules 26-22 at the half. Vasquez led off for the Mules with a hoop and then dropped in a trey before the quarter ended. Castillo and Dustin Smith made two free throws each. Boehning put back a rebound. 

After the intermission the Mules did not seem to be able to buy a basket while the Lopes went wild. Smith made the Mules first hoop of the period, added two from the charity line and dropped in a long distance trey at the buzzer. Franco made a hoop and Boehning chipped in a free throw. 

Some Mules may join the Mules for their playoff run and others will move on to compete in the Spring sports. 

 

Lady Mules vs. Abernathy (2-4-14)

The Lady Mules closed out their basketball season on the road in Abernathy against the Lady Lopes. The Lady Mules were playing for pride while Abernathy had slim hopes of securing the fourth spot in the playoffs. 

The Lady Mules owned a 9-7 lead at the end of the first period after both teams got off to a very slow start but firing away from behind the arc. The Lady Lopes broke the scoring ice with a trey almost half way through the opening period. 

Adrienne Precure answered a minute later and Daniela Diaz put the Lady Mules ahead with back-to-back 3-pointers. The Lady Mule defense held Abernathy to just two baskets in the second period while the Lady Mules built a 20-11 lead by the intermission.

The Lady Lopes returned to the floor a different team and out scored the Lady Mules 32-12 in the second half to defeat the Lady Mules 43-32.

DonAnn Rempe opened the second period with a basket for the Lady Mules. Precure and McKenna Dunham made two free throws each. Rempe converted a free throw to finish a 3-point play and put back a rebound to cap a seven-point quarter. 

Precure tied the game at 22-22 with the Lady Mules first basket of the second half with 3:15 left in the third quarter. She also made three free throws for all five Lady Mule points in the quarter and hang on to a 25-23 lead. 

The Lady Lopes exploded for 20 fourth period points with 10 coming from the charity line, four from inside the arc and six from behind the 3-point line. 

Rempe was fouled while shooting and converted one free throw almost two minutes into the final frame. Sadie Sudduth scored from inside the arc with a pull-up jump shot. Dunham added a pair of baskets. 

Precure led the Lady Mules in scoring in her final game of her high school career with 10 points. Rempe completed her career as a Lady Mule with eight points and Dunham closed out her career with six points. Diaz made all her six points with the two treys in the first period. Sa Sudduth will return next season and she chipped in two points. 

The Lady Mules will now move on to their Spring Sports.

The JV Lady Mules could not seem to buy a basket in the final period in Littlefield against the Lady Cats. The Lady Mules lost 34-29. 

The Lady Mules returned home to host the Lady Hornets of Tulia. The Hornets felt the frustration the Lady Mules had been carrying around all week. The Lady Mules squashed the Hornets 46-14.

Angie Perez sank a 3-pointer in the first period against the Lady Cats. Emily Precure made a long lay up and Yasmine Sandoval chipped in a pair of free throws. 

Sasha Esparza sandwiched a free throw between a pair of baskets in the second quarter. Perez made a free throw as did Precure. Sandoval again made two from the charity line. The Lady Mules trailed the Lady Cats 20-16 at the half. 

Marissa Reyes got the Lady Mules started in the third period with a basket. Dessiree Gutierrez cut the Lady Cat lead to 23-21 with an old-fashion three-point play and Precure made a basket. The Lady Mules had trimmed the Lady Cat lead to 26-25. 

Esparza made the first Lady Mule basket to tie the game at 27-27 and Gutierrez picked off a Lady Cat basket and drove the floor for a hoop. That was the final tally for the Lady Mules. 

Esparza led the Lady Mules in scoring with seven points and Sandoval added six. Precure and Gutierrez dropped in five points each. Perez made all four of her points in the first half and Reyes chipped in two points. 

Points were hard to come by in the opening period against Tulia. Reyes opened the game for the Lady Mules with a basket and Brittney Mendoza nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Lady Mules led Tulia 5-3 at the quarter break. 

Mendoza’s trey seemed to ignite the Lady Mule offense. Gutierrez made a freed throw to start the second quarter. Jasmine Garza dropped in a free throw and Esparza drove the paint for a basket and later chipped in a free throw. 

Sandoval stole a pass and drove the floor for a basket. Perez beat the buzzer with a baseline jump shot. The Lady Mules had built up to a 14-8 lead. 

The Lady Mules seemed to catch fire from behind the arc in the third quarter as Mendoza, Gutierrez and Sandoval each made a trey. Garza made back-to-back baskets and Esparza made a free throw. 

Reyes made two free throws and Marilyn Melendez put back a rebound. Sandoval’s trey came just ahead of the buzzer. The Lady Mules led 34-14 and did not appear ready to turn back any of their lead. 

The Lady Mule defense held Tulia scoreless in the final quarter while pumping in 12 points. 

All of the Lady Mules scored in the game and Esparza and Reyes led the way with eight points each. Sandoval added seven points and Mendoza dropped in six points. Garza made five points and Gutierrez had four points.  Zoe Apodaca, Perez, Precure and Melendez chipped in two points each. 

The Lady Mules completed their season in Abernathy against the Lady Lopes before moving to their Spring sports.

The Mules enjoyed a good week as they hit the road to Littlefield and had to work their way out of a seven-point hole they had dug in the opening period. The Mules were out of the hole by the half and led the Wildcats 23-20 at the intermission. 

Littlefield had worked their way back to a 41-40 lead by the end of the third quarter. Neither team was hot from the charity line but the Mules battled for all eight minutes and defeated Littlefield 59-55 to stay in the hunt for a state playoff spot. 

Tulia visited the Mules Friday night and the Mules leaped out to a 38-11 lead in the first half and then pushed the cruise button. The Mules defeated the Hornets 54-34. 

Dagen Dunham put back a rebound to get the Mules started in Littlefield. He added a second hoop before the period ended. Eli Leal also grabbed an offensive rebound and went back up strong for his first hoop of the night. Jason Florez finished a fast break to end the period with the Mules trailing 15-8.

Blayne Shipman put back a rebound for the Mules first points of the second period. Later Leal drove and drew the defense. He then dished to Shipman for a point-blank shot. Florez lob the ball over the defense to Dunham and he scored from inside the blocks. 

Danny Campos hit a baseline jump shot. Leal made a pair of free throws to briefly put the Mules in front. He later hit from the elbow to tie the game at 20-20. Grey Johnson set up out side the arc and Shipman passed him the ball from the blocks. Johnson sank a 3-pointer from the wing to give the Mules a 23-20 lead at the half.

Leal made a free throw to start the third period and Nacho Elizalde added a pair of charity tosses. Dunham, Campos and Shipman made a basket each in the period. Matt Barron made a steal and drove to the hoop and then took over the game. 

Barron scored three more baskets to keep the Mules close. The Mules trailed by a single point after Littlefield hit three 3-pointers in the quarter.    

Barron led off the final quarter where he left off in the third frame with a fast break basket. He scored twice more and converted one free throw for an old-fashion 3-point play. Leal lobbed the ball over the defender that was fronting Dunham. Dunham grabbed the pass and immediately banked the ball off the glass for an easy hoop. 

Campos missed two sets of free throws before sinking his final pair of charity tosses. Johnson scored from inside the arc and Leal made a perfect dish to Elizalde following on a fast break. Elizalde was uncovered a scored. Leal drove the final four nails in the Wildcat’s coffin from the free throw line. 

Barron scored all of his game high 15 points in the second half and Leal added 11 points for the Mules. Dunham quietly dropped in 10 points and Campos and Shipman made six points each. Johnson had five points, Elizalde made four and Florez chipped in two points. 

The Tulia game may have seemed like a walk in the park for the Mules after having played Littlefield. Elizalde was on the receiving end of a Leal pass for a short shot. Barron went coast-to-coast for a lay up.

Dunham stuck back a rebound for points and Leal battled through a Hornet foul and made the lay up but missed the charity toss. He sank a 3-pointer before the Hornets scored to break the Mules’ 11 point scoring run. 

Leal scored three more baskets and two free throws for 13 of his game high 22 points. The Mules led the Hornets 23-4 after one quarter. 

Elizalde also opened the second quarter with a hoop as a result of an assist from Leal. Barron sank a trey and two free throws to end the first half with 11 of his 14 points. Elizalde scored on an assist from Elizalde. Leal drove the floor for his first hoop and then scored from the elbow. The Mules had pushed their lead to 38-11 at the half. 

The Mules cruised through the second half. 

Leal led the way with 22 points and Barron finished with 14. Dunham, Austin Ross and Elizalde dropped in six points apiece. 

The Mules traveled to Abernathy Tuesday to take on the district leading Antelopes. The Mules will play a practice game at 6:30 PM Friday in the high school gym and then will complete their regular season in Friona against the Chieftains February 11.

The Lady Mules traveled to Littlefield Tuesday to face the Lady Cats and were flat in the first three quarters of the game. They came alive in the final frame but it was to late and Littlefield won the game 51-22. 

Friday was Senior Night when the Tulia Lady Hornets visited the high school gymnasium. The Lady Mules played all four quarters on both ends of the floor and defeated the number three team in District 2-2A, Tulia, 58-56.

“Tonight might be my proudest moment of my coaching career,” said Lady Mule coach Jay Gorman. “To beat Tulia on Senior Night with everything we've gone through this year. I am just so happy for Adrienne (Precure), McKenna (Dunham) and DonAnn Rempe, my three seniors! They deserved that!”

The Lady Mules only scored four points in the first half and trailed 24-4. They doubled their score in the third period with Daniela Diaz making the two free throws and Adrienne Precure made a basket from the elbow. The Lady Mules trailed 40-8 with eight minutes left to play. 

The Lady Mules came alive in the final period with McKenna Dunham making an eight-foot jump shot to get the Lady Mules going. She made two more hoops before the game ended. 

Sadie Sudduth nailed a 3-pointer from the wing and then added two free throws. Precure drove to elbow and hit a jump shot. Reagan Reynolds was fouled attempting to put back a rebound. She made one of her two free throws to end the game. 

Dunham led the Lady Mules in scoring with seven points and Precure added six points. Sa Sudduth dropped in six points, Diaz had three points and Reynolds chipped in one point. 

The Lady Mules survived a hail storm of 3-pointers by the Lady Hornets Friday night as Tulia rained down nine treys. The Lady Hornets made three of their 3-pointers in the first period. 

Precure finished a fast break to get the Lady Mules started and she made two more baskets before the period ended. Sa Sudduth sank a 15-foot jump shot from near the baseline before her sister, Sydnie Sudduth added a hoop that tied the game at 12-12. 

Sy Sudduth was fouled and made both free throws and Diaz made a lay up. The Lady Mules trailed 17-14 after one quarter. 

Precure powered her way through a foul and made the first basket of the second period. She converted the free throw to tie the game at 17-17. Dunham put back a rebound and Sy Sudduth made a free throw. 

Sa Sudduth sank a trey from the corner and then made a basket to tie the game at 25-25. Precure hit from the elbow before the period ended to give the Lady Mules a 27-25 lead at the intermission. 

The lead changed hands seven times in the third period as the two teams battled back-and-forth. Tulia had taken a 38-37 lead by the time the quarter ended. 

Precure got Dunham the ball on the blocks and she scored to get the Lady Mules started. Precure fed her the ball with the same results later in the frame. Precure made a free throw before Diaz dropped in a 3-pointer from the wing. DonAnn Rempe put back a rebound for a basket.   

The Lady Mules out scored the Hornets 21-18 in the final quarter for the win. Diaz scored the first hoop for the Lady Mules after Sa Sudduth got her the ball. Diaz returned the favor and Sa Sudduth hit a 12-foot shot.  

Diaz made a free throw to put the Lady Mules on top 39-38. Dunham made a pair of free throws. Precure delivered the ball to Dunham on the blocks later in the period and she turned and scored. 

Sy Sudduth and Rempe also delivered the ball to Dunham down low and she scored. Dunham put back a rebound for her tenth point in the final quarter. Sa Sudduth made both ends of a one-and-one foul to put the Lady Mules in front to stay.

Dunham scored 10 of her 16 points in the final quarter to lead the Lady Mules in scoring. Precure was a basket behind her with 14 points and Sa Sudduth finished with 11 points. Diaz added eight points and Sy Sudduth dropped in five points. Reynolds and Rempe made two points apiece. 

The Lady Mules traveled to Abernathy Tuesday evening to play their final game of the season. They will then transition to their respective Spring Sports.

The JV 2 Lady Mules led the Dimmitt Bobbies 13-8 after one quarter but the Bobbies battled back to tie the game at 24-24 after three quarters. The Lady Mules took the lead early in the third period and went on to defeat Dimmitt 36-26.

Imelda Salcido picked off a Bobbie pass and drove the floor for the first basket of the game. Mireya Ruvalcaba found a crease in the Bobbie defense and drove to the hoop from the right wing. Dimmitt scored before Pearlita Marrufo got the ball to Kennedy Orozco in the lane for a short jump shot. 

The Bobbies scored before Ruvalcaba scored on an in bound play. Ahtziri Elizalde drove and fought through a foul for a hoop. She converted the free throw for an old-fashion 3-point play and gave the Lady Mules an 11-4 lead with two minutes left to play. 

Ruvalcaba picked a Bobbies pocket and drove the floor for a hoop. The Bobbies scored the final two baskets of the period but the Lady Mules led 13-8.

Ruvalcaba made a free throw to open the second quarter. She dished the ball to Elizalde on a fast break to put the Lady Mules up 16-8. Dimmitt scored the next three baskets and cut the Lady Mule lead to 16-14. 

Ruvalcaba made a steal and drove the floor for a basket before the Bobbies made a pair of free throws. The Lady Mules led the Bobbies 18-16 at the half. 

Elizalde drove the hoop for a lay up to start the third period before the Bobbies scored a basket. Elizalde passed to Paolett Landeros open on the blocks and she turned and scored. Dimmitt score back-to-back baskets to tie the game before the period ended. 

Ruvalcaba stole a Dimmitt in bound pass and drove to the hoop to put the Lady Mules on top to stay. The Lady Mules tightened up their defense and held the Bobbies to just two points in the final quarter. 

Salcido hit from 14 feet and Desirae Sanchez put back a rebound for two points. Elizalde drove the paint for a lay up. Elizalde broke on the ball as a Bobbie in bound the ball. Elizalde grabbed the pass and drove the floor for a lay up to push the Lady Mule lead to 34-24.

The Bobbies scored with 1:15 left to play. Ruvalcaba made the outlet pass to Elizalde for a fast break basket that ended the game. 

Elizalde led the Lady Mules in scoring with 15 points. Ruvalcaba added 11 points and Salcido dropped in four. Landeros, Orozco and Sanchez chipped in two points each. 

The Lady Mules finished their season on the road in Littlefield Monday night and will move on to their Spring sports very soon.

The eighth grade Lady Mules closed out their home season Monday evening by defeating the Dimmitt Bobbies 33-15. The win improved the Lady Mules season record to 11 wins against just one loss.

“It did not take us a couple of quarters to warm up this time,” said Lady Mule Coach Edie Niblett. “We came out ready to set the pace and control the game. All these ladies understand we push the ball up the floor and score.”

“I love working with all these girls and thank them for making a job so much fun.”

Conley Niblett hit a 10-foot jump shot to ignite the Lady Mule offense. The Bobbies tied the game seconds later but that was the final time the Bobbies were even close to the Lady Mules. Yvonne Diaz picked a Bobbies pocket and drove to the hoop. 

Brianna Barron passed to Niblett on the blocks. Niblett put the ball up but it did not fall through the hoop and Barron grabbed the offensive rebound and scored. Hallie Myatt sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 9-2 Lady Mule lead. 

Myatt saw Barron breaking open on an in bound play and got her the ball for an easy hoop. Lili Barrera passed to Brianna Velasquez on the blocks. Velasquez spun and hit the hoop. Barron scored with 12 seconds remaining in the first period and Dimmitt ended the quarter with a hoop. The Lady Mules led 15-4 after one quarter. 

Niblett and Diaz made the only two hoops of the second period for the Lady Mules and Dimmitt answered with only one. The Lady Mules led 19-6 at the half. 

Barrera scored in the paint to open the third period. The Bobbies made a free throw. Barron scored on a fast break before Myatt passed to Niblett in the paint. Niblett took the ball high in the air and shot over a defender for two points. Myatt finished a fast break to give the Lady Mules a 27-7 lead with just under five minutes left in the third period. 

Diaz was fouled shooting and made both free throws. Noa Rojas made a strong move on the blocks and scored the final hoop of the third period. The Lady Mules led 31-7 with one quarter left to play. 

The Lady Mules seemed to loose a bit of their intensity in the final period an allowed the Bobbies to score more points in the final quarter than they had in the first three periods. 

Barron put back a rebound for the Lady Mules only basket of the final frame. 

Niblett and Barron set the scoring pace for the Lady Mules with eight points each. Diaz added six points and Myatt dropped in five. Barrera, Rosas and Velasquez made two points apiece. 

The Lady Mules traveled to Littlefield Monday to play the Lady Cats in the two teams final game of the season. The Lady Mules will trade their basketball uniforms for track togs. 

The B-Team 1 Lady Mules defeated Dimmitt 26-15 to improve their season record to 7-2. The Lady Mules out scored Dimmitt 6-2 in each of the first two periods and 8-6 in the third quarter and 6-5 in the final frame. 

“This was a great game for these ladies,” said Coach Niblett. “They worked well together on both ends of the court. We have improved with every game and have fun while playing.” 

Laura Chavez led the Lady Mules with 10 points and Haley Hunt added four. Maddison Price and Ricarda Elizalde made four points each and Madison Lutz chipped in two points.

The seventh grade Lady Mules wrapped up their home basketball season Monday evening and improved their season record to 12-4. They defeated the Dimmitt Bobbies 36-11 after scoring the first six point of the game before the Bobbies could finally break the scoring ice. 

The Lady Mules led 14-2 after one period and 24-4 at the half. 

“These girls worked really hard to incorporate everything that we have learned thus far into this game,” said Lady Mule coach Jalissa King. “We had several girls step up into new roles and played hard. Everyone contributed in some aspect to this game.”

Citlalli Vargas put the Lady Mules in front to stay 40 seconds into the game when she put back an offense Lady Mule rebound for the first basket of the game. Abigail Boehning hit a short jump shot and Natalie Elizalde passed across the paint to Boehning for an easy bucket and a 6-0 Lady Mule lead.

Dimmitt finally scored half way through the opening period. Elizalde again made the pass to Boehning for a short jump shot. Kinsey Parker banked in a 16-foot shot on an in bound play. 

Parker and Keely Dunham teamed up for the final two Lady Mule baskets of the first quarter. Parker got the ball to Dunham on the blocks for both shots. The Lady Mules led 14-2 after one period. 

Elizalde was fouled shooting to open the second period and made one free throw. About a minute later she grabbed a long rebound and drove the floor for a lay up. Reina Regalado stole the ball and drove the floor for a hoop. Miranda Melendez was fouled while shooting and made a free throw. 

Natalie Diaz stole a Bobbie pass, drove the floor and dished to Kyndal Miller to finish the fast break. Boehning scored in the paint for a 24-2 Lady Mule lead. Dimmitt scored just before the half ended with the Lady Mules leading 24-4.

Boehning got the Lady Mules started in the second half. Elizalde made a lay up before Dimmitt made a basket and added a free throw. Boehning scored in the paint to end the third period with the Lady Mules leading 30-7.

The Bobbies made a hoop that began the final quarter. Regalado grabbed a long rebound and drove the floor for a basket. Miller hit a running jump shot from the free throw line for a 34-9 Lady Mule lead. Dimmitt added one last hoop and Elizalde put back a rebound for the final hoop of the game. 

Boehning had the hot hand for the Lady Mules and scored all 12 of her points in the first three quarters. Elizalde added seven points. Miller, Regalado and Dunham dropped in four points each. Parker and Vargas made two points each and Melendez chipped in one point. 

The Lady Mules will travel to Littlefield to close out their season before moving on to track season.

The B-Team 2 Lady Mules defeat Dimmitt 24-7 and have a record of 4-5. The game was tied at 2-2 after one quarter but the Lady Mules led 6-2 at the half. The Lady Mules scored six unanswered points in the third quarter and out scored the Bobbies 12-5 in the final period. 

“This team really has come a long way this season,” said Coach King. “This game involved plays on offense and defense that we had not yet ran and these girls rose to the challenge. They did really, really well.”

Alexis Campos led the Lady Mules with six points. Ab Mendoza, Sophie Reyna, Kayla Torres and Xiomara Regalado added four points each.

The freshmen Mules finished third in the Dimmitt Tournament January 24 and 25. The Mules defeated Abernathy in the opening round 43-18. The Mules fell to Littlefield in the second game 41-35. Tulia proved to be no match for the Mules as they took the game 55-32. The Mules defeated Shallowater in the finals 37-14 for third place. 

Beto Diaz pumped in 16 points against Abernathy and Boo Flores added nine points. Blake Parker dropped in five points and Aaron Ross scored three points. Jessie Leal, Mario DeHoyas, Jaxon Lee, Tim Perez and Reese Orozco made two points each. 

Diaz again led the Mules with 15 points in a losing effort against Littlefield. Flores added 11 points and Donovan Gutierrez made five points. Javy Perez and Leal chipped in two points each. 

Diaz had the hot hand against Tulia as he scored 20 points. J Perez added nine points and Parker and DeHoyas dropped in five points each. Leal and Noah Nikkel made four points each. Orozco finished with three points and Ross and Lee had two points each. Gutierrez chipped in a point. 

Diaz made it a clean sweep by leading the Mules against Shallowater with 15 points. Gutierrez added eight points and Ross dropped in six. Orozco had three points and Eric Herrera and Lee made two points each. Parker finished with one point.

The JV Mules traveled Olton Tuesday evening and jumped out to a 17-7 lead over the Mustangs in the first half. The returned after the half and continued to pour it on and defeated the Mustangs 43-19. 

The Mules returned home Friday night to host the Dimmitt Bobcats. The Mules leaped out of the gate in the opening period and stayed close through the next two quarters. The Bobcats took down the Mules in the final frame to leave with a 55-43 win. 

JJ Gandara scored the Mules first basket on a fast break in Olton with 2:28 left in the first period. Keagan Gonzales put back and offensive rebound for two points and Tony Castillo hit a 15-foot jump shot. Roman Franco hit a free throw and the Mules led 7-3 after one quarter. 

Franco scored with five minutes left before the half. Kevin Mendoza, Gonzales and Antonio Vasquez each made a hoop in the second quarter and the Mules led 17-7 at the intermission. 

Tristian Boehning got the Mules rolling in the third period and added a second basket before the quarter ended. Gonzales, Castillo, Bryce Mauricio and Dustin Smith made a basket each. The Mules had pushed their lead to 29-11. 

Franco finished a fast break to get the Mules rolling in the final quarter. Mendoza, Castillo and Boehning made a hoop each and Gandara made a free throw. Aaron Ross dropped in a three pointer. 

Castillo led the Mules with eight points and Gonzales and Boehning added six points each. Franco dropped in five points and Vasquez and Mendoza finished with four points apiece. Gandara and Ross had three points each and Mauricio and Smith chipped in two points each. 

Franco began the game against Dimmitt with a three-point play and added a basket before the period ended. Castillo dropped in a three pointer from the wing and Mendoza added a hoop. Gonzales scored inside and Vasquez made a basket before knocking down a trey. The Mules led 17-14 after one quarter. 

Castillo made a hoop and added a free throw in the second period. Mendoza and Vasquez made a hoop each but Dimmitt scored 13 points to take a 27-24 lead by the intermission. 

The Mules chipped one point off the Bobcat lead in the third period with Vasquez making a pair of baskets. Franco, Castillo and Boehning dropped in a hoop each and Mendoza made a pair of charity tosses. The Mules trailed 38-37 with seven minutes left to play in the game.

The Bobcats ran away from the Mules in the final period. Mendoza led off with a basket and Castillo made a trey. Franco chipped in a pair of free throws. 

Vasquez and Castillo led the Mules with 11 points each, Franco added nine points and Mendoza dropped in eight points. Gonzales and Boehning chipped in a two points each. 

The Mules traveled to Littlefield Tuesday night to battle the Wildcats and will return home Friday to host the Tulia Hornets.

The JV Lady Mules traveled to Olton on Tuesday night and rounded up the Fillies. The Lady Mules served notice early that they were serious and out scored Olton 15-10 and then held the Fillies to just three points in the second period to lead 27-13 at the half.

Just when it appeared the Lady Mules could not draw their defense any tighter they shut the Fillies down to a single point while adding 13 to their total. The Lady Mules went on to defeat the Fillies 55-25.

Emily Precure dropped in a 3-pointer five seconds into the opening period. Yasmine Sandoval made back-to-back baskets and Angie Perez got the ball to Sasha Esparza for her first basket. Esparza then put back and offensive rebound and was fouled shooting. She converted the free throw for a to complete a three-point play. 

Marilyn Melendez received the pass from Zoe Apodaca and she finished a fast break. Jasmine Garza made a free throw and the Lady Mules led 15-10 after one quarter. 

Precure led off the second period with a trey. Marissa Reyes finished a fast break that Apodaca started with a pass to Reyes. She added a second hoop before the period ended. Esparza put back a rebound for points and Marilyn Melendez scored in the paint. Apodaca chipped in a free throw to give the Lady Mules a 27-13 lead at the half. 

Esparza started the third quarter with a hoop and added two more hoops later in the period. Garza drained a trey and Apodaca and Reyes added a basket each to extend the Lady Mule lead to 40-14. 

Angie Perez hit a 3-pointer to open the final quarter. Precure made her third trey of the game and drove the floor for a hoop. Apodaca, Garza and Reyes added a hoop each and Brittney Mendoza chipped in a free throw. 

Esparza set the scoring pace for the Lady Mules with 13 points and Precure added 11 points. Reyes dropped in eight points, Garza made six points and Apodaca had five points. Sandoval and Melendez scored four points each, Perez finished with three points and Mendoza chipped in one point. 

The Lady Mules traveled to Littlefield to battle the Lady Cats Tuesday evening and return home January 31 to host the Tulia Hornets. The Lady Mules will wrap up their season in Abernathy against the Lady Lopes.

The Olton Mustangs had lost a couple of key players since the first time the Mules had played them. This meeting was a lot different as the Mules ran away with the game 83-41 in Olton. 

The Mules returned home Friday to host the Dimmitt Bobcats. The Mules had won the first meeting between the two team and repeated the feat in front of a home crowd 66-53.

Olton made a 3-pointer 30 seconds into the game for a brief lead over the Mules. Eli Leal drained a trey from the wing to tie the game a minute and a half into the contest. He missed a pair of free throws before dropping in his second trey before the quarter ended. 

Matt Barron broke through the back door and Leal fed him the ball for an easy hoop. Barron then finished a fast break before Jason Florez made a free throw. Barron maed a charity toss before Leal again fed him the ball for a short jump shot. 

Barron hit a trey from the wing and converted a free throw to complete a three-point play. Dagen Dunham scored from the blocks. The Mules had doubled up on the Mustangs and led 22-11.

Leal led off the second period with a trey from the top of the key 15 seconds into the quarter. He had two pair of free throws before the half ended. Blaine Hurtado finished a fast break for a basket. Nacho Elizalde made one free throw. 

Leal drove into the paint and drew the defense and then dropped the ball to Dunham for a chip shot. Barron and Grey Johnson both made a pair of free throws before the half ended. The Mules led Olton 40-20 at the half. 

Leal started the third period with a driving hoop 15 seconds into the second half. He then drained a 3-pointer from the wing and finished the period with a hoop. Barron made three hoops as did Danny Campos. Dunham also made three hoops as he worked the backside of the offensive boards. Florez chipped in a free throw. The Mules had increased their lead to 62-31. 

Leal scored first for the Mules for the fourth consecutive quarter with a hoop. Florez made a pair from the charity line. Austin Ross took the feed from Leal and scored easily and then made a steal and drove the floor for his second hoop. Blaine Shipman put back an offensive rebound for a basket. 

Barron made a hoop before he dropped in his second trey of the game. He made a hoop before the quarter ended. Johnson finished a fast break for the Mules final two points of the game. 

Barron set the scoring pace for the Mules with 28 points and Leal added 22 points. Campos made six of his eight points in the third period. Florez made four-of-six free throws on his way to a six point game and Dunham also scored six points. Ross and Johnson made four points each. Hurtado and Shipman made two points each and Elizalde chipped in one point. 

Dimmitt rained 11 treys on the Mules Friday and still came up short. 

The Bobcats started out fast but the Mules quickly made the adjustment and began to shut Dimmitt down. Barron made penetrated and scored before he drained a 3-pointer. He added a second hoop and a free throw before the first quarter ended. 

Leal made a pair of free throws and made a reverse lay up. Campos made a free throw and then added a hoop. Barron dished to Dunham for an easy hoop. Dunham cleaned the offensive boards and put the ball back on the glass for a basket. The Mules led the Bobcats 21-13 after one quarter. 

Leal open the second period with a trey and Florez put back an offensive rebound. Florez later dropped in a free throw. Ross made a steal and drove the floor for a hoop. Barron dropped in a pair of free throws and Dunham hit from 12 feet. The Mules led 33-24 at the intermission. 

Leal caught fire in the third period with a basket before being fouled shooting from outside the arc. He made the first two of the three free throws. Leal made two more hoops and converted two free throws for 10 points in the quarter. 

Dunham took the dish from Elizalde and scored easily. He put back an offensive rebound before the quarter ended. Florez, Ross and Campos added a hoop each as the Mules increased their advantage by six points. They led the Bobcats 53-38 with eight minutes left to play. 

Dunham converted passes from Elizalde and Leal to score twice in the paint. He also cleared the boards and stuck the ball back in for six points in the period. Barron made three free throws and Leal added a pair of hoops. 

The Mules were out scored by Dimmitt 15-13. The Bobcats made five treys in the final quarter. 

Leal led the Mules with 21 points and Dunham added 16. Barron dropped in 15 points and Florez and Campos scored five points each. Ross finished with four points. 

The Mules traveled to Littlefield to battle the second place Wildcats. The Mules return home Friday night to celebrate Senior Night and host the cellar dwelling Tulia Hornets. The Mules would like to even the score with the Hornets.

The Lady Mules dropped both games this past week to fall to a record of 2-7 in district. The Lady Mules could only muster two points in the first period against Olton. The Fillies defeated the Lady Mules 44-38. 

The Dimmitt Bobbies visited the Lady Mules on Friday night and demonstrated why they are leading the district with a record of 9-1. The Bobbies utilized their size and strength to defeat the Lady Mules 51-41.

Daniela Diaz scored the only basket in the first period one minute into the game in Olton. She beat the defense down the floor on a fast break. The Fillies made back-to-back 3-pointers to lead the Lady Mules 6-2 after one period. 

McKenna Dunham made a turn-around jump-shot two and a half minutes into the second period. Rempe passed Dunham the ball from the free throw line for the assist. Diaz had a three point opportunity but failed to convert the free throw but later in the period she made a pair of free throws when she was fouled while shooting. 

Adrienne Precure shot from the elbow to briefly put the Lady Mules in front 10-9. Sadie Sudduth made a 15-foot base line jump shot. Olton went ahead of the Lady Mules and led 17-12 at the intermission. 

The Lady Mules chipped one point off the Fillies lead in the third quarter. Diaz made one free throw to start the third period. Precure made back-to-back passes to Dunham on the blocks. Dunham scored twice and Precure got the assist. Precure made a hoop to tie the score at 19-19. 

But Olton made a trey and a free throw to go up 23-19 by the time the quarter ended. 

The Lady Mules scored as many points in the final quarter as they had in the first 24 minutes. Sadie Sudduth got the rally started with a 3-pointer from the wing. She later put the Lady Mules on top 28-27 with a hoop. She added two more baskets before the game ended. 

Rempe picked up another assist by make a lob pass to Dunham behind the defense for an easy shot. Dunham added a second hoop and a free throw before the game ended. Precure grabbed a long rebound and drove the floor for a lay up. She did the same later in the period to give the Lady Mules a 33-32 lead. 

Olton made all 12 free throws in the final period to out score the Lady Mules 21-19 for the win. 

Sa Sudduth and Dunham led the Lady Mules in scoring with 11 points apiece. Precure added nine points and Diaz dropped in seven. 

The Dimmitt Bobbies held the Lady Mules scoreless until the 3:15 mark of the first period when Reagan Reynolds put back an offensive rebound. Diaz made two free throws and Dunham completed an old-fashion three-point play by battling her way through a foul and making the basket. She converted the free throw. The lady Mules trailed 15-7 after one quarter.

Sa Sudduth got the second period started for the Lady Mules with 3-pointer from the corner with seven minutes left in the first half. Sa Sudduth made a second trey with 39 seconds left in the half. 

Shanice Rosas muscled through a foul for a basket but missed the free throw. Dunham made two free throws and Precure and Reynolds each converted one free throw. The Lady Mules trailed 24-19 at the half. 

Precure made the first Lady Mule basket of the third period. She added a pair of free throws and a hoop before the quarter ended. Rosas cleared the offensive boards and put back the rebound for a basket. She converted the free throw after being fouled shooting. Dimmitt increased their lead to 37-28 with eight minutes left to play. 

Sydnie Sudduth made both ends of a one-and-bonus foul with 4:10 left in the game to open the final period for the Lady Mules. Sy Sudduth repeated her feat and then drained a 3-pointer before the game ended. 

Sa Sudduth took a pass from Diaz and converted it to points. Rosas had one basket in the period. Dimmitt scored fourteen points in final quarter and made 10 of 13 free throws in the final period. 

Precure led the Lady Mules with nine points and Sa Sudduth added eight points. Sy Sudduth made all seven of her points in the final quarter and Rosas also scored seven points. Dunham dropped in five points, Reynolds had three points and Diaz chipped in two.

The Lady Mules traveled to Littlefield Tuesday night to play the Lady Cats and will return home for the last time to host the Tulia Hornets. The Lady Mules will play one last game on the road in Abernathy February 4.

Powerlifting Abernathy Meet (1-25-14)

David Rodriguez led the Muleshoe powerlifting team with a silver medal in the 275 pound weight class of the Abernathy Powerlifting Meet. Three other Muleshoe lifters also brought home medals.

“All the lifters improved their totals by raising at least one or more of their lifts,” said Muleshoe powerlifting coach Kirk Byrd. “I was really proud of all of our team and what they accomplished here. Our next meet is February 8 in Levelland.”

Rodriguez raised 450 pounds in the squat lift and followed that with 300 pounds in the bench press. He had a dead lift of 450 pounds for a total weight of 1200 pounds. 

The 132 pound and 148 pound weight classes were combined. Katelyn Gable earned the fourth place medal in the combined class. Had she competed in only her class she would have taken the silver medal with a total weight of 590 pounds. 

Gable had a squat lift of 230 pounds and then bench pressed 110 pounds. She completed the meet with a deadlift of 250 pounds. 

Jordan Russell and Braden Bessire won fifth place medals in their respective classes. 

Russell had a squat lift of 360 pounds in the 275 pound class. He bench pressed 220 pounds and had a deadlift of 420 pounds for a total weight of 1000 pounds. 

Bessire finished with a total weight of 980 pounds in the 165 pound class. He started with a squat lift of 385 pounds and moved to the bench press for a lift of 195 pounds. He finished with a deadlift of 400 pounds.

Carlos Martinez finished just out of the medals for sixth place in the 220 pound class with a total weight of 1025 pounds. He had a squat lift of 410 pounds and bench pressed 205 pounds. He completed the meet with a deadlift of 410 pounds. 

Cristian Paez placed ninth in the 148 pound class with a total weight of 885 pounds. He had a squat lift of 330 pounds and bench pressed 185 pounds. Paez deadlifted 370 pounds. 

Aimee Rosas was also in the combined classes of 132 and 148 pounds. She placed tenth with a total weight of 510 pounds. She squat lifted 170 pounds and bench pressed 95 pounds. Rosas finished with a dead lift of 245.

Jorge Martinez finished eleventh in the 181 pound class. He raised 410 pounds in the squat lift and bench pressed 205 pounds. Martinez deadlifted 410 pounds for a total weight of 1025 pounds for the meet. 

The next meet for the powerlifting team will be held in Levelland February 8.

It was a tale of two halves Monday evening when the eighth grade Mules hosted the Olton Mustangs. Olton won the first half 12-5 but the Mules over came the seven point deficit to defeat the Mustangs 23-22.

Olton dominated the Mules in the first period and jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the end of the period. The Mustangs out scored the Mules 6-5 in the second quarter to lead the Mules 12-5 at the intermission. 

The Mules battled back in the third period to trim the Mustang lead to 18-16. The Mules scored a free throw with 46 seconds left in the game. Olton’s final shot was a desperation half-court toss that was wide of the mark. 

Jacob Kettner sank a 3-pointer from the win for the Mules first points of the game 40 seconds into the second quarter. Olton made a basket and Brendon Rodriguez cleared the offensive boards and put the ball up and in for a hoop. Olton made a free throw and a trey before the period ended to lead 12-5 at the half.

Mikey Lozano stole a Mustang in bound pass and drove the floor for a lay up to ignite the Mule offense in the third frame. Juan Sanchez put back an offensive rebound to cut the Olton lead to 12-9 with 5:07 left in the third quarter. 

Olton answered with a basket before Rodriguez was fouled shooting. He made one free throw. A minute later Rodriguez drove the baseline for a short jumper and 30 seconds after that he scored on an in bound play and tied the game at 14-14. 

Olton scored back-to-back baskets to jump back in front of the Mules with a minute and half left in the third quarter. Lozano grabbed a long defensive rebound and drove the floor for a lay up. The Mules trailed 16-18 at the end of the third period. 

Lozano hit a running jump shot from the elbow to tie the game at 18-18 with 4:34 left in the game. Olton scored to take the lead. Lozano made the out-let pass to Kettner to start the fast break. Kettner kissed the ball off the glass to tie the game at 20-20.

Kettner picked off an Olton pass and drove the floor for a lay up to put the Mules up by two points. Olton tied the game with 1:23 showing on the clock. JoJo Rejino was fouled on a put back attempt and made the winning free throw with 46 seconds left in the game. 

The Mules grabbed a defensive rebound and called time out with seven seconds on the clock. The Mules tried to drain the final seconds off the clock and the Mules turned the ball over with two seconds left. 

Olton drove to near mid court and fired up a last second attempt that went wide of the basket. 

Kettner and Rodriguez led the Mules in scoring with seven points apiece. Lozano added six points and Sanchez made two. Rejino only made one point but it was the point that put the Mules in front to stay. 

The Mules traveled to Dimmitt Monday evening to play the Bobcats. The Mules return home to host a tournament January 30 and February 1. The Mules play their final home game February 3 against the Littlefield Wildcats.

It took the combined seven and eighth grade B team four and half quarters to defeat their counterparts from Olton 15-14. The game was an 8-8 dead heat at the intermission and after the next two periods the game was tied at13-13. 

The Mules held Olton to a single free throw in the over time and the Mules scored two-of-six free throws. But that was enough to defeat the Mustangs 15-14.

Olton scored the first three points of the game before Rigo Mendoza made a basket. Olton led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Olton scored to lead the Mules 5-2. Mendoza sank a 12-foot base line jump shot and later was fouled shooting and made both free throws to give the Mules the lead for the first time at 6-5. 

Olton sank a trey with 15 seconds left in the half. Adrian Bustillos drove across the paint with time running out and made a reverse lay up to tie the game at the half at 8-8. 

The Mustangs scored first in the third period. Leonel Camarena made a six-foot jump shot in the paint to tie the game. Forty-five seconds later Camerena battled through a foul to score a basket. He missed the free throw but the Mules led 12-10 with 3:05 left in the quarter.

Olton made one-of-two free throws. Chris Ramos was fouled shooting and made one free throw to end the third quarter with the Mules leading 13-11.

The Mustangs made a free throw to start the final quarter. The Mule defense hung close to the Olton ball handler and got the five second call for a turn over. Olton got the ball back and was fouled shooting. The Mustang made a free throw to tie the game at 13-13 just before the game ended. 

The extra period Bustillos and Ethan Gonzales were both fouled out front and both made  a free throw. Olton could only make one of two free throws and allowed the Mules to win the game 15-14.

The Mules traveled Dimmitt Monday to face the Bobcats and will return home February 3 to host the Littlefield Wildcats. The Littlefield game is the final home Mule appearance of the season. They will wrap up the season in Tulia February 10.

The seventh grade Mules got off to a slow start Monday night against the Olton Mustangs but came back after the intermission looking like a different team. The Mules out scored Olton 7-3 in the third period and 9-5 in the fourth to defeat the Mustangs 22-20.

Ryan Rodriguez scored the Mules first two points of the game about a minute and half into the first period. Ean Hasley added the Mules second hoop and Olton led the Mules 6-4.

Olton held the Mules to just two points in the second period. Izaiah Hurtado scored on a fast break 40 seconds into the quarter. Olton dropped in eight points to take a 14-6 lead to the dressing room at the half. 

The Mules tightened up on defense in the third frame and held the Mustangs to just three points. Hurtado opened the second half with a basket. Rodriguez put back an offensive rebound for two points before Olton made a free throw.

Ethan Villa was fouled shooting and made a free throw.  Noah Russell was fouled on a put-back attempt and made a free throw. Hurtado picked a Mustang’s pocket, drove the floor and was fouled shooting. He made one free throw to end the period with the Mules trailing 13-17.

Hurtado drove the lane and was fouled shooting to start the final period. He made one free throw. On the next trip down the floor Hurtado drove to the hoop from the right wing for a lay up and cut Olton’s lead to one point. 

Hurtado again found an open lane to the hoop on the right side and drove for a lay up to put the Mules in front 18-17 with 3:05 left to play. Olton made a free throw to tie the game. 

Ethan Villa finished a fast break after catching a three-quarter court pass to again give the Mules the lead. Olton tied the game one last time with a hoop with 1:45 left in the game. Luke Del Toro broke through Olton’s back door and Rodriguez passed him the ball for a short jump shot to end all scoring. 

Hurtado led the Mules in scoring with 10 points and Rodriguez added five points. Villa, Del Toro and Hasley each dropped in two points and Russell chipped in one point. 

The Mules traveled to Dimmitt Monday to battle the Bobcats. The Mules will host a tournament January 30 and February 1. The Mules play their final home game February 3 when they host the Littlefield Wildcats.
