8th Lady Mules @ Lady Mule Tourny (1-30 & 2-1)
The eighth grade Lady Mules took no prisoners in their quest for the
Championship Plaque of their own tournament. They plowed through the Littlefield
Lady Cats 35-6 in the opening round.
The Trinity Christian Lady Lions were no match for the Lady Mules and went
down to defeat 40-17. The Nazareth Swiftettes did not get run out of the gym by
the Lady Mules but were defeated 37-25 in the championship game.
The Lady Mules jumped on the Littlefield Lady Cats early to take a 12-1
lead in the first period. The Lady Mules backed off on the scoring in the second
period and only put four points on the board but only gave up two to lead the
Lady Cats 16-3 at the half
Conley Niblett led the charge for the Lady Mules in the first half with
four baskets and two free throws for 10 points.
The Lady kept the heat on the Littlefield and out scored the Lady Cats 17-3
in the second half.
Niblett led the Lady Mules in scoring with 16 points and Yvonne Diaz added
10 points. Lili Barrera dropped in four points, Noa Rojas made three points and
Melody Moran chipped in two.
Niblett led off against the Trinity Lions with the first three hoops. Diaz
scored after the Lions had made their first basket. Brianna Barron scored on a
baseline jump shot on an in bound play and was fouled. She converted the free
throw to give the Lady Mules an 11-2 first quarter lead.
The Lady Mules poured in 14 points in the second period and gave up seven
to lead the Lions 25-9 at the half. The second half was more of the same by the
Lady Mules.
Niblett again led the Lady Mules in scoring with 16 points Barrera and Diaz
added seven points each. Rojas had four points, Barron and Moran dropped three
points each and Brianna Velasquez chipped in two points.
The championship game pitted the best two teams in the tournament against
one another. Nazareth scored first but Barron got Barrera the ball on the blocks
for a short shot to tie the game. Diaz scored on an in bound play to briefly
put the Lady Mules in front 4-2.
The Swiftettes made a trey but Niblett hit a free throw to tie the game.
Nazareth made a free throw to take a 6-5 lead to end the first period.
Barron stole the ball and got the ball to Niblett for a fast break hoop.
Barrera passed to Niblett on the blocks for a turn-around jump shot. The next
trip down the floor Barrera again fed the ball to Niblett for a hoop. Nazareth
hit a trey to climb back in the game. Niblett fed the ball to Diaz for a short
shot and a 13-9 Lady Mule lead.
The Swiftettes made a basket before Barrera drove the right side for a lay
up to end the half with the Lady Mules leading 15-11.
Nazareth cut the Lady Mule lead to 16-15 early in the third period but then
the Lady Mules took over the game and finished the third period with a 27-17
lead. The Lady Mules managed to extend their lead to 12 points by the final
buzzer.
Niblett finished the game with 13 points and Diaz added nine points. Barron
dropped in seven points and Barrera had six points. Velasquez chipped in two
points.
The Lady Mules went on the road to Littlefield to close out their season
against the Lady Cats. The Lady Mules scored eight points in each of the first
three quarters and 10 in the final period to defeat the Lady Cats 34-19.
“We went on the road to end our season in Littlefield with a win,” said
Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “These girls had an awesome season with only one
loss. Yvonne Diaz and Conley Niblett gave them trouble on offense and they could
not shut down either one of them.”
“Hallie Myatt did a great job of taking care of the ball and running our
offense. This has been a fun season and have loved working with such an
energetic and competitive group. Every member of this team contributed to make
the season a success.”
Yvonne Diaz led the Lady Mules in scoring with 12 points and Conley Niblett
added 11 points. Lili Barrera finished with five points, Barron made four and
Cassidy Cage chipped in two points.
The B-Team 1 Lady Mules defeated the Littlefield Lady Cats 16-12.
“We ended our season with a very exciting game,” said Coach Niblett.
Littlefield made a come back in the fourth quarter but our girls were able to
hang on for the win. This group has been fun to work with and I appreciate all
their hard work to help make their season successful.”
Madison Lutz and Ricarda Elizalde led the Lady Mules in scoring with four
points each. Laura Chavez, Maddison Price, Haley Hunt and Nancy Martinez scored
two points each.
The seventh grade Lady Mules downed the Littlefield Lady Cats 34-13 to
finish their season at 13-4. The Lady Mules jumped in front early by out scoring
the Lady Cats 12-5 in the first period and continue to add to their lead in
every quarter.
“These girls have really shown great improvement this year,” said Lady Mule
coach Jalissa King. “The first time we played Littlefield we only won by three
points. The second time we played them we only won by seven points. To come out
our last game and beat Littlefield by 21 points shows how far they have come.
What a great way to end our season.”
The B-Team 2 Lady Mules held Littlefield scoreless in the first half and
allowed only four points in the second half. The Lady Mules defeated the Lady
Cats 32-4.
“Every girl contributed to the win with steals, rebounds or points,” said
Coach King. “This team has really improved this year. The last time we played
Littlefield at the beginning of the season we lost by six points. As the score
show this game was significantly different.”
Leading the Lady Mules in scoring was Liliana Martinez with eight points.
Alexis Campos, Ab Mendoza and Sophie Reyna added four points each in the win.
