Combined Boys B-Team vs. Olton (1-20-14)
It took the combined seven and eighth grade B team four and half quarters
to defeat their counterparts from Olton 15-14. The game was an 8-8 dead heat at
the intermission and after the next two periods the game was tied
at13-13.
The Mules held Olton to a single free throw in the over time and the Mules
scored two-of-six free throws. But that was enough to defeat the Mustangs
15-14.
Olton scored the first three points of the game before Rigo Mendoza made a
basket. Olton led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Olton scored to lead the Mules 5-2. Mendoza sank a 12-foot base line jump
shot and later was fouled shooting and made both free throws to give the Mules
the lead for the first time at 6-5.
Olton sank a trey with 15 seconds left in the half. Adrian Bustillos drove
across the paint with time running out and made a reverse lay up to tie the game
at the half at 8-8.
The Mustangs scored first in the third period. Leonel Camarena made a
six-foot jump shot in the paint to tie the game. Forty-five seconds later
Camerena battled through a foul to score a basket. He missed the free throw but
the Mules led 12-10 with 3:05 left in the quarter.
Olton made one-of-two free throws. Chris Ramos was fouled shooting and made
one free throw to end the third quarter with the Mules leading 13-11.
The Mustangs made a free throw to start the final quarter. The Mule defense
hung close to the Olton ball handler and got the five second call for a turn
over. Olton got the ball back and was fouled shooting. The Mustang made a free
throw to tie the game at 13-13 just before the game ended.
The extra period Bustillos and Ethan Gonzales were both fouled out front
and both made a free throw. Olton could only make one of two free throws and
allowed the Mules to win the game 15-14.
The Mules traveled Dimmitt Monday to face the Bobcats and will return home
February 3 to host the Littlefield Wildcats. The Littlefield game is the final
home Mule appearance of the season. They will wrap up the season in Tulia
February 10.
