9th Mules vs.
Plainview (10-23-2014)
The freshmen Mules rolled
over the Plainview Bulldogs 50-0 Thursday evening. Michael Lozano returned the opening
kick to the Mule 43. Isaac Mendoza scored on a 53-yard run on the Mules’ second
play but it was called back to the Plainview 31 because of a penalty.
But it was only a slight set
back for the Mules. Mendoza tossed a swing pass to Arnulfo Hernandez and the
play went for 11 yards. Hernandez went left and was taken down by his facemask.
When the dust settled the Mules had a first and goal at the Plainview
three-yard line.
Mendoza scored on a
three-yard run to put the Mules on top to stay with 7:15 remaining in the first
quarter. The Mules led 6-0.
Hernandez kicked off out of
bounds at the Plainview 32. Zach Atwood made the tackle after a three-yard
Plainview gain. Carlos Meza and Joe Waggoner got in the Bulldog backfield for a
two-yard loss. An incomplete pass forced the Bulldogs to punt.
The punt sailed to the Mule
32. Lozano caught the punt and returned the ball to the right and scooted 68
yards for a touchdown. Mendoza put a pancake block on the gunner to set Lozano
free. Mendoza located Jeremiah Smith open in the end zone for the two-point
conversion. The Mules led 14-0 with 5:12 left in the first period.
Hernandez kicked off to the
Bulldog end zone. It was three-and-out for Plainview with a loss of a yard on
the three plays. Waggoner made a solo tackle for no gain on first down.
Waggoner then teamed up with Coleman Preston for a stop after a two-yard gain.
A motion penalty backed the
Bulldogs up five yards. Carlos Hernandez tackled the Bulldog running back after
a two-yard gain. The Plainview punt rolled out of bounds at the Mule 43.
Mendoza connected with JoJo
Rejino for 14 yards on first down to the Plainview 43. A. Hernandez made a
swing pass to Mendoza for seven yards. Lozano got the ball on a reverse and
raced 41 yards for a touchdown with 21 seconds remaining in the first period.
The Mules led 21-0 after one period.
Meza recovered a Plainview
fumble at the Bulldog 47. Mendoza threw to Lozano and he scooted 47 yards for a
touchdown with 6:44 left in the half. Mendoza connected with Jacob Kettner for
the two-point conversion and 29-0 Mule lead.
After the Mule kickoff the
Bulldogs could only gain five yards on four plays. The Mules took over on downs
at the Plainview 42. Lozano took the Hammer pitch up the middle for 13 yards
and then scored on the Hammer play from 25-yards out with 3:08 left in the
half. A. Hernandez kicked the extra point for a 36-0 Mule lead.
The Mules recovered a Bulldog
fumble at the Plainview 27. A. Hernandez connected with Rejino and the play was
good for 23 yards. Rejino scored from four-yards out on the Hammer. A.
Hernandez booted the extra point for a 43-0 Mule lead with just over a minute
left in the first half.
The clock was allowed to
continually run in the second half. Plainview got the ball to start the second
half and marched from the Bulldog 35 to the Mule 30 before running out of downs
early in the final period.
Atwood scored the Mules’
final TD on a five-yard Hammer play.
The Mules are open Thursday
night and will host the Denver City Mustangs November 6 to close out the
season.
