7th Mules vs. Dimmitt

The seventh grade Mules
extracted a bit of revenge from the Dimmitt Bobcats Monday. The Mules opened
the 2014-2015 basketball season on the road in Dimmitt November 20 and the
Mules did not fare well.
The Mules demonstrated great
improvement Monday when they defeated the Bobcats 33-29.
Jacob Barron put back an
offensive rebound for the first two points of the game. He added a second
bucket before Dimmitt scored and strung together an eight-point scoring run.
Eddie Vasquez finished a fast break to end the quarter with the Mules trailing
8-6.
The Mules took the lead early
in the second period when Derek Barron pushed the ball ahead to Vasquez on a
fast break. Vasquez fought through a foul to score and finished the three-point
play with a free throw. The half ended with the Bobcats clinging to a 16-15
lead.
Kelan Florez opened the
second half with a trey from the right wing to put the Mules on top 18-16.
Dimmitt tied the game at 18-18. J. Barron drove coast-to-coast for a lay up. He
was fouled shooting on the next trip down the floor and added a free throw.
J. Barron picked off a
Dimmitt pass but missed the lay up. He kept the ball alive and put back his own
rebound for a 23-18 Mule lead with three minutes remaining in the third period.
Vasquez added a free throw
just prior to Cristian Bustillos picked a Bobcat’s pocket and drove the floor
for a lay up for a 26-18 Mule lead. Dimmitt battled back with a basket and a
free throw to cut the Mule lead to 26-21 with one period left to play.
Dimmitt scored five points to
knot the game at 26-26 with four minutes left on the clock.
Vasquez made a pair of free throws
after being fouled on a fast break. Florez nailed his second trey of the game.
J. Barron took the outlet pass and drove the floor and was fouled shooting. He
made both charity tosses to extend the Mule lead to 33-26.
The Bobcats ran out of time
before they could catch the Mules.
Vasquez led the Mules with 12
and J. Barron was close behind with 11. Florez sank two treys for six points.
Bustillos and D. Barron chipped in two points each.
The Mules played in the
Levelland Lobo Tournament January 8 and 10 and then went to Littlefield Monday.
The Mules stay on the road in the Friona Chieftain Tournament January 15 and
17. The Mules are back in Friona Monday, January 19 and finally return home
January 26 to host the Tulia Hornets.
