JV Mules vs. Bovina

The JV Mules came back strong
after the Christmas break and defeated the Bovina Mustangs 40-28 to start the
new year. The Mules raced out to an 11-5 lead in the first period and the two
teams tied 8-8 in the second period.
The Mules owned the Mustangs
in the third period as they raced out of the gate in the second half to almost
double up on the Mustangs 17-9. The
Mules cruised in the final period for the win.
Javy Perez made a free throw
to crank the Mule offense in the first half. Triston Boehning scored in the
paint and was fouled. Boehning completed the three-point play by making the
free throw.
Aaryn Ross drove the lane for
a basket and with just less than three minutes left in the first quarter he hit
from behind the 3-point arc. Jesse Leal cleared the offensive glass and put the
ball back up for two points.
Perez turned in the paint and
scored to start the second quarter. Mario DeHoyas took the outlet pass and went
coast-to-coast for a lay up. Boehning added three points before the
intermission and Leal chipped in one free throw.
Leal opened the second half
with a steal, drove the floor and scored. Later he scored on an inbound play.
Tim Perez and Matthew Flores chipped in two points each. Donavan Gutierrez
scored on back-to-back trips down the floor.
Perez scored in the paint and
sank a 3-pointer with time running out. The Mules led 36-22 with one period
left to play.
Flores scored a minute into
the final period and Boehning scored in the paint for the Mules four points in
the quarter.
Boehning and Perez led the
balanced charge for the Mules with eight points each. Leal finished with seven
points and Ross dropped in five points. Flores and Guiterrez added four points
each. Perez and DeHoyas chipped in two points each.
The Mules were open Tuesday
night but are preparing to open district at Littlefield against the Wildcats
January 16.
