JV Lady Mules vs. Shallwater (1-9-2015)
The JV Lady Mules traveled to Shallowater
Friday night to open district against the Fillies. The Lady Mules play a scrappy
form of basketball and had taken a 13-8 lead by the half.
Shallowater trimmed one off the lead in the
third period but then a switch appeared to flip and the officials appeared to
take over the game. Shallowater took the game 34-28.
“I am not one that ever to completely blame
referees for the loss of a game, said Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “Coaches and
players learn what needs to be taken care of on both ends of the
floor.”
“They sure can change the momentum and shut
things down in a hurry. I am very proud of our girls for giving it 100 percent
and never giving up regardless of the foul count.”
“Desi Gutierrez did a great job of being a
leader for this team and finished with 10 points. Halley Myatt and Brittney
Mendoza played great on both ends of the floor.”
The Lady Mules are now 10-5 on the season and
0-1 in district.
Gutierrez got off to a fast start in the
opening period and made a lay up for the first points of the game. She made one
from the charity line and nailed a trey with time running out to tie the game at
6-6.
The Lady Mule defense gained traction in the
second period and held the Fillies to just two points.
Jasmine Garza cleaned up the backside by
putting back an offensive rebound to start the second half. Brianna Barron
chipped in a free throw. Gutierrez made a steal, drove the floor and scored.
Mendoza got Karla Bustillos the ball in the paint and she added a basket to give
the Lady Mules a 13-8 lead at the half.
Garza opened the second half with an
old-fashion three-point play by adding the free throw after being fouled making
a basket. She added a second basket later in the period. Mendoza and Paolette
Landeras each added a hoop. The Lady Mule led 22-18 with one period left to
play.
Shallowater cashed in at the foul line as the
foul count mounted against the Lady Mules. Barron scored twice in the quarter
and Gutierrez made the final hoop for the Lady Mules.
Gutierrez led the Lady Mules with 10 points
and fouled out before the game ended. Garza finished with seven points and
Barron added five points. Mendoza, Landeras and Bustillos chipped in two points
each.
The Lady Mules hosted the Dimmitt Bobbies
Tuesday night and then travel to Littlefield to battle the Lady Cats Friday,
January 16.
