The Mules football season ended Thursday night on Snyder High School’s Tiger Stadium turf. The Breckenridge Buckaroos out muscled the Mules. The Mules had faced teams with some big players all season but not in almost every position like the Bucks put on the field.

The Mules scored first and had several opportunities but could never get the ball back in the end zone. The Bucks scored twice in the second quarter and that would have been enough but added a TD in both the third and fourth quarters to defeat the Mules 28-7.

“We intended to pass on them all week to try to loosen them up so we could make the run work”, said Mule coach David Wood. “Danny (Campos) was not ready to go the whole game and we did not want him to run with the ball so we stayed with the ones that had brought us to the dance.”

“Our red zone offense was almost nonexistent tonight. When the zone shrinks things get really clogged up. Keagan (Gonzales) had not had to make the throws we needed tonight. But the kids left it all on the field and continued to make things happen. I was very proud of them and their effort.”

The Bucks won the toss and kicked off to start the game. Gonzales hit Chamel Regalado for a first down on the first play of the game. Josh Lopez hit the right side of the defense behind Issac Acosta and Dagen Dunham pulling on the play for six yards.

Lopez circled wide to the right out of the backfield and Gonzales delivered him the ball. Lopez gained 10 yards to the Buck’s 39-yard line. Regalado ran a hitch and go. Gonzales tossed him the ball and Regalado reached the Breckenridge 22.

A second hitch and go catch by Regalado moved the Mules to the Buck nine yard line. A holding penalty cost the Mules nine yards and the offense stalled out. Felipe Guerrero attempted a 36-yard field goal that bounced off the cross bar and back into the end zone.

Breckenridge took over at the Mule 20. Three plays later the Bucks pitched to the tailback and headed wide right. Javy Perez came up his safety spot for the stop and Saul Sanchez ripped the ball free. The ball flew out and Regalado recovered at the Buck 22.

Jason Florez was the lone receiver on the left side on first down. Florez ran a down and out pattern and Gonzales fired him the ball for a first down at the Breckenridge 12. The Mules emptied the backfield and Gonzales ran up the middle for three yards.

On second down the Mules again emptied the backfield and Gonzales took the snap, took a step forward to freeze the linebackers and fired a bullet to Regalado standing all alone three yards deep in the end zone for a touchdown with 3:39 left in the first period. Guerrero’s kick was good and the Mules led 7-0.

The Bucks strung together an 11-play 58-yard drive that ended on a three-yard touchdown dive into the end zone by Austin Dooley. The PAT kick was good and the game was tied at 7-7 with 9:43 left in the first half.

Just over five minutes late the Bucks scored a second time on a 28-yard fourth down run to cap a nine-play 66-yard drive with 4:23 remaining before the intermission.

The Bucks insurance TD was a 67-yard quarterback sneak with 4:31 left in the third period. Breckenridge’s final score was a one-yard run that capped a 15-play 74-yard drive that ate up over eight minutes in the final period.

The Mules had a total of 261 yards of offense with 53 being on the ground and 208 through the air. Gonzales rushed 12 times for 37 yards and completed 22 of 37 passes for 200 yards. Lopez rushed four times for 17 yards and caught five passes for 27 yards.

Regalado made seven receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown. Sanchez made six catches for 53 yards. Tony Vasquez and Florez made three receptions each for 25 yards apiece.

Javy Perez and Ryder White led the Mule defense with 20 tackles each. Sanchez made nine tackles, one being for a loss and caused a fumble. Roman Franco had nine tackles and Dominik Hasley made eight tackles, three being for losses, one sack, one quarterback hurry, broke up a pass, recovered a fumble and made a special teams tackle.

Regalado had eight tackles, one being for a loss and recovered a fumble and Braden Bessire made eight tackles with one being for a loss. Dagen Dunham had seven tackles with one being for a loss, David Rodriguez made seven tackles and Cameron Hardwick had six. 

The Mules will now make the transition to basketball and play their first game in Hale Center against the Owls December 2, 2014.

The Lady Mules’ Run-n-Gun Offense took its toll on the Morton Maidens Tuesday night. The fouls began to mount up on the Maidens and forced them to back off on defense. The Lady Mules used those opening to put the Maidens away 65-44.

It was more of the same Tuesday when the Anton Lady Dawgs visited the New Muleshoe High School Gym. The game was close at the half with the Dawgs leading 22-21. But the second half turned in favor of the Lady Mules with Conley Niblett owning the lane and the Lady Mules nailed the door shut on the Dawgs from the free throw line for a 53-41 win.

Morton sank a 3-pointer to open the game. Sydnie Sudduth led a fast break down the floor for a basket. Shenice Rosas was fouled shooting on the next trip down the floor and made one-of-two free throws to tie the game at 3-3.

Daniela Diaz answered a Maiden hoop by driving from the left side of the lane and made the left-handed lay up to keep the game tied. The teams traded a free throw each with Rosas making one for the Lady Mules.

Morton scored from the free throw line but Sadie Sudduth drove on a fast break and when the Maiden stepped over to defend her Sa. Sudduth dished the ball to Reagan Reynolds for the hoop and the first Lady Mule lead with three minutes left in the first period.

Sa. Sudduth was fouled shooting on the next Lady Mule fast break and made a free throw. Morton tied the game but D. Diaz was fouled in the back court and made both ends of the one and one opportunity.

Sasha Esparza made two hoops in the final 30 seconds of the first period to give the Lady Mules a 16-13 lead after one period.

The Lady Mules added two points to their lead during the second quarter. Sy. Sudduth, Angie Perez and D. Diaz each dropped in a 3-pointer. The Lady Mules led 31-26 at the intermission.

Morton began to lose more ground to the Lady Mules in the third period as the foul count began to add up and key Maiden players were forced to sit. The Lady Mules out scored the Maiden 19-11 to extend their margin to 50-37 with eight minutes of basketball remaining to play.

Sa. Sudduth dropped in a 3-pointer from the top of the key. D. Diaz made her second charity toss of the period before Sa. Sudduth was fouled in the back court. She made both the charity toss and the bonus to put the Lady Mules up 57-38 with 3:40 left in the game.

D. Diaz dished to Sa. Sudduth to finish a fast break and Esparza put back a rebound. D. Diaz scored from the blocks and Esparza finished a fast break to end the scoring.

D. Diaz led the Lady Mules in scoring with 19 points. She made one trey, four hoops and was eight-of-11 from the foul line. Sy. Sudduth dropped in two treys and finished with 14 points. Sa. Sudduth and Esparza scored 10 points each. Reynolds added five points, Angie Perez made three points and Yvonne Diaz and Rosas chipped in two points each.

Niblett spun on the blocks and shot over her defender for the two points of the game against Anton. The Dawgs answered with a 3-pointer. Niblett made a post-to-post pass and Rosas scored. D. Diaz answered a Dawg free throw with a charity toss before Anton went on a five-point run to take a 9-5 lead with 2:30 remaining in the first period.

Perez passed to Sy. Sudduth cutting to the hoop for a basket. Perez connected with Y. Diaz on the next trip down the floor for a hoop to tie the game at 9-9. Anton broke the tie with a trey to lead the Lady Mules 12-9 to start the second period.

The Dawgs out scored the Lady Mules 7-4 to start the second period. The Lady Mules battled back Niblett putting back an offensive rebound and Y. Diaz set a screen for Diaz to drive around for a left-handed lay up.

Niblett was dominating the paint on both ends of the floor and scored to tie the game at 19-19 with 2:47 left in the first half. D. Diaz put the Lady Mules on top but Anton made three free throws before the half ended to claim a 22-21 at the intermission.

Sa. Sudduth fed Niblett in the paint to start the third quarter. Sa. Sudduth fed the ball to Niblett on the next trip down the floor as Niblett broke to the hoop for a score. D. Diaz finished a fast break to give the Lady Mules a 27-22 lead with 6:30 left in the third period.

Anton battled back with two sets of free throws and a hoop. D. Diaz ended the Dawg scoring run with a 3-pointer from the right wing. Sa. Sudduth made one free throw and Sy. Sudduth made two charity tosses. Sy. Sudduth made a half-court pass to Y. Diaz streaking down the floor for a lay up.

Anton made a trey to hang in the game Sa. Sudduth grabbed a loose ball and drove the floor for a hoop. Perez passed to Reynolds on the blocks for a hoop. The Lady Mules led 39-33 with eight minutes left in the game.

The Lady Mules made eight of 14 from the charity line in the final period. Niblett shot and missed in the paint but kept the ball alive and grabbed the rebound and put it back up on the glass for a hoop. On the next trip down the floor Niblett drove the lane for a lay up and the win.

Anton scored 17 of 23 free throws, four treys and only six hoops in the game. The Lady Mules made 12 of 23 free throws, one 3-pointer and 19 two-pointers during the fray.

Niblett had been shut out in Morton due to foul trouble but led the Lady Mules with 16 points against Anton. D. Diaz added 10 points and Y. Diaz and Sy. Sudduth dropped in eight points each. Rosas scored five points, Sa. Sudduth made four points and Reynolds chipped in two points.

The Lady Mules traveled to Abernathy on Monday night. They will stay on the road with games in Hale Center, December 2, Lubbock High, December 5, and Floydada, December 9.

They are scheduled to play in the Abernathy Antelope Tournament December 11-13 and then at Lubbock Roosevelt December 16. The Lady Mules will play in the Texico Tournament December 29-31 and will start the New Year by hosting the Bovina Lady Mustangs January 6.

The JV Lady Mules caught fire at the tip in Morton to open the season. The Lady Mules toasted the Maidens 51-10. Jasmine Garza scored off the tip to put the Lady Mules on top to stay.

“Desi (Gutierrez) and Brittney (Mendoza) were on fire from the three-point line,” said JV Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “That forced the Morton defense to come out and make an attempt to shut them down. That made it easy for our inside game. Our full court press is looking better and we were able to get everyone lots of minutes on the floor.”

Desi Gutierrez nailed her first of three 3-pointers in the game from the top of the key. Hallie Myatt stole the Maiden inbound pass and scored on a drive down the baseline. Garza was fouled on a put-back attempt and made both shots from the charity line.

Brittney Mendoza finished a fast break with a lay up to put the Lady Mules up 11-0 with four and a half minutes left in the first quarter. Morton broke the Lady Mule scoring run with a free throw.

Marilyn Melendez made an eight-foot base-line jump shot to start another Lady Mule scoring run. Yasmine Sandoval snagged a defensive rebound and scooted coast-to-coast for a lay up. The Maidens scored as the first period ended with the Lady Mules leading 17-3.

The Lady Mules may have turned down the heat slightly in the next three quarters but still out scored Morton 12-2 in the second period, 10-2 in the third and 12-3 in the final period for the win.

Garza, Mendoza and Gutierrez led the Lady Mules with 10 points each. Garza made most of her points in the third period when she made three hoops. Mendoza scattered her hoops through out the game. Gutierrez dropped in three treys and one free throw.

Myatt scored seven points with one being a 3-pointer in the final period. Sandoval made all six of her points in the first half and Melendez added four points. Paulette Landeros and Karla Bustillos chipped in two points each.

The Lady Mules played in the Hale Center Owl Tournament over the weekend. They go on the road for their next five games and return home January 6 to host the Lady Mustangs of Bovina to start the New Year.

The freshmen Lady Mules lost a heart breaker to the Dimmitt Bobbies in the district opener 26-25. The Lady Mules also fell to the Anton JV Lady Dawgs Friday night 30-26. 

Brianne Velasquez finished a fast break for the first points of the Dimmitt game. Melody Moran pushed the ball ahead to Val Ambriz on a fast break to put the Lady Mules on top 4-2.

The Bobbies scored to tie the game but Moran picked a Bobbies pocket and drove the floor to end the first period with the Lady Mules leading 6-4.

Dimmitt went on a 6-0 run to start the second period before Noa Rojas set a screen for Ambriz as she drove to the hoop for a lay up. Ambriz got the ball to Rojas on the blocks. Rojas spun and shot over her defender for a score. Dimmitt made two final hoops in the half to lead the Lady Mules 16-10 at the break.

Ricarda Elizalde made a pair of free throws with a minute and a half left in the third quarter to break a 4-0 scoring run by the Bobbies. Laura Chavez and Brenda Martinez scored a hoop each before the third quarter ended with the Lady Mules trailing 20-16.

Rojas, Elizalde, Velasquez and Cassidy Cage made a hoop each in the final quarter. Moran added a free throw to cut the Bobbie lead to a single point.

Rojas, Elizalde, Velasquez and Ambriz led the Lady Mules with four point each. Moran dropped in three points. Cage, Martinez and Rojas chipped in two points apiece.

The Lady Mules got off to a very slow start on offense against Anton and ended the first period with no points. But the Lady Mule defense held the Dawgs to just six points. Velasquez finally broke the Lady Mule scoring drought with just under four minutes left in the second quarter.

Moran scored and Lily Barrera hit two baskets with the second being just prior to the end of the half. The Lady Mules trailed 13-8 at the intermission.

Martinez scored to start the third quarter and Barrera chipped in a free throw. Rojas scored from the blocks and Alexis Campos hit from the elbow. Anton had extended their lead over the Lady Mules to 25-15.

Velasquez led off for the Lady Mules in the final quarter with 6:30 remaining in the game. Elizalde made three hoops in the last quarter. Barrera made a free throw and a hoop before the game ended.

Barrera led the Lady Mules with eight points and Elizalde dropped in six points. Velasquez added four points. Moran, Martinez, Rojas and Campos chipped in two points each.

The Lady Mules are on the road to Littlefield and Friona for their next two games. The Lady Mules play in the Denver City Tournament December 4-6 and finally return home December 8 to host the Tulia Hornets.

Keely Dunham fired up the eighth grade Lady Mule offense with a free throw one minute into the home district opener. She later stuck back an offensive rebound. Alyssa Wheeler picked a Dimmitt Bobbies pocket and drove the floor for a lay up. Natalee Elizalde finished the period with a basket.  

The Lady Mules completely shut down the Bobbie offense in the opening period and went on to a 32-5 win. Natalie Diaz grabbed a long offensive rebound and scored from the elbow to give the Lady Mules a 9-0 lead after one quarter.

The Lady Mule defense continued to hold the Bobbies in the second period and only allowed Dimmitt a single point. Maddison Price put back an offensive rebound one minute into the period.

Kinzie Parker drove the from the wing for a lay up. Citlalli Vargas added a bucket and Wheeler made a lay up. Elizalde received a pass from Raina Regalado and scored. The Lady Mules led 19-1 at the half.

Wheeler dropped in a pair of baskets in the third period and Price made a free throw and a basket. The Lady Mules led 26-5 with one quarter left to play.

Price scored twice in the final frame and Dunham put back a rebound.

Price led the Lady Mules with nine points. Wheeler dropped in eight points and Dunham added five points. Elizalde scored four points, Diaz and Parker chipped in two points each.

The Lady Mules traveled to Littlefield November 24 and Friona December 1. The Lady Mules return home December 8 to host Tulia.

The seventh grade Lady Mules cruised to a 15-9 win over the Dimmitt Bobbies Monday evening in their home district opener. Val Toscano got the Lady Mules going in the opening quarter.

Dimmitt led the game 3-2 after one quarter. 

Anahi Sandoval did all the damage for the Lady Mules in the second quarter. She scored first on an inbound play and then stuck back an offensive rebound. The Lady Mules trailed 7-6 at the intermission. 

The Lady Mules came out firing on all cylinders in the third period and at the same time completely shut down the Bobbies scoring. Destiny Vasquez scored from the elbow just 30 seconds into the quarter. 

Sandoval grabbed a defensive rebound and drove coast-to-coast for a lay up. She later finished a fast break. Joceline Ramirez took and inbound pass from Sandoval and scored. The Lady Mules had pumped in nine points in the quarter to lead 15-7 to start the final period. 

Dimmitt scored the only hoop of the final period. 

Sandoval led the Lady Mules with eight points. Vasquez added three points and Toscano and Ramirez chipped in two points each.

The Lady Mules are on the road for the next two games. They traveled to Littlefield November 24 and Friona December 1. They will return home December 8 to play the Tulia Hornets.
