9th Lady Mules vs. Dimmitt
& Anton (11-17&21-2014)
The freshmen Lady Mules lost
a heart breaker to the Dimmitt Bobbies in the district opener 26-25. The Lady
Mules also fell to the Anton JV Lady Dawgs Friday night 30-26.
Brianne Velasquez finished a
fast break for the first points of the Dimmitt game. Melody Moran pushed the ball
ahead to Val Ambriz on a fast break to put the Lady Mules on top 4-2.
The Bobbies scored to tie the
game but Moran picked a Bobbies pocket and drove the floor to end the first
period with the Lady Mules leading 6-4.
Dimmitt went on a 6-0 run to
start the second period before Noa Rojas set a screen for Ambriz as she drove
to the hoop for a lay up. Ambriz got the ball to Rojas on the blocks. Rojas
spun and shot over her defender for a score. Dimmitt made two final hoops in
the half to lead the Lady Mules 16-10 at the break.
Ricarda Elizalde made a pair
of free throws with a minute and a half left in the third quarter to break a
4-0 scoring run by the Bobbies. Laura Chavez and Brenda Martinez scored a hoop
each before the third quarter ended with the Lady Mules trailing 20-16.
Rojas, Elizalde, Velasquez
and Cassidy Cage made a hoop each in the final quarter. Moran added a free
throw to cut the Bobbie lead to a single point.
Rojas, Elizalde, Velasquez
and Ambriz led the Lady Mules with four point each. Moran dropped in three
points. Cage, Martinez and Rojas chipped in two points apiece.
The Lady Mules got off to a
very slow start on offense against Anton and ended the first period with no
points. But the Lady Mule defense held the Dawgs to just six points. Velasquez
finally broke the Lady Mule scoring drought with just under four minutes left
in the second quarter.
Moran scored and Lily Barrera
hit two baskets with the second being just prior to the end of the half. The
Lady Mules trailed 13-8 at the intermission.
Martinez scored to start the
third quarter and Barrera chipped in a free throw. Rojas scored from the blocks
and Alexis Campos hit from the elbow. Anton had extended their lead over the
Lady Mules to 25-15.
Velasquez led off for the Lady
Mules in the final quarter with 6:30 remaining in the game. Elizalde made three
hoops in the last quarter. Barrera made a free throw and a hoop before the game
ended.
Barrera led the Lady Mules
with eight points and Elizalde dropped in six points. Velasquez added four
points. Moran, Martinez, Rojas and Campos chipped in two points each.
The Lady Mules are on the
road to Littlefield and Friona for their next two games. The Lady Mules play in
the Denver City Tournament December 4-6 and finally return home December 8 to
host the Tulia Hornets.
