The seventh grade Mules extracted a bit of revenge from the Dimmitt Bobcats Monday. The Mules opened the 2014-2015 basketball season on the road in Dimmitt November 20 and the Mules did not fare well.

The Mules demonstrated great improvement Monday when they defeated the Bobcats 33-29.

Jacob Barron put back an offensive rebound for the first two points of the game. He added a second bucket before Dimmitt scored and strung together an eight-point scoring run. Eddie Vasquez finished a fast break to end the quarter with the Mules trailing 8-6.

The Mules took the lead early in the second period when Derek Barron pushed the ball ahead to Vasquez on a fast break. Vasquez fought through a foul to score and finished the three-point play with a free throw. The half ended with the Bobcats clinging to a 16-15 lead.

Kelan Florez opened the second half with a trey from the right wing to put the Mules on top 18-16. Dimmitt tied the game at 18-18. J. Barron drove coast-to-coast for a lay up. He was fouled shooting on the next trip down the floor and added a free throw.

J. Barron picked off a Dimmitt pass but missed the lay up. He kept the ball alive and put back his own rebound for a 23-18 Mule lead with three minutes remaining in the third period.

Vasquez added a free throw just prior to Cristian Bustillos picked a Bobcat’s pocket and drove the floor for a lay up for a 26-18 Mule lead. Dimmitt battled back with a basket and a free throw to cut the Mule lead to 26-21 with one period left to play.

Dimmitt scored five points to knot the game at 26-26 with four minutes left on the clock.

Vasquez made a pair of free throws after being fouled on a fast break. Florez nailed his second trey of the game. J. Barron took the outlet pass and drove the floor and was fouled shooting. He made both charity tosses to extend the Mule lead to 33-26.

The Bobcats ran out of time before they could catch the Mules.

Vasquez led the Mules with 12 and J. Barron was close behind with 11. Florez sank two treys for six points. Bustillos and D. Barron chipped in two points each.

The Mules played in the Levelland Lobo Tournament January 8 and 10 and then went to Littlefield Monday. The Mules stay on the road in the Friona Chieftain Tournament January 15 and 17. The Mules are back in Friona Monday, January 19 and finally return home January 26 to host the Tulia Hornets.

The eighth grade Mules only trailed by a single point when the first half ended. Adjustments at the intermission allowed the Mules to take over in the second half and roll to a 37-25 win.

Ryan Rodriguez scored in the lane to start the game. Dimmitt made a free throw and later in the quarter added basket to lead the Mules 3-2. Ean Hasley made a 15-foot jump shot from the elbow. Dimmitt chipped in a free throw to tie the game at the end of the first period tied at 4-4.

Luke Del Toro drove the lane for a hoop after Dimmitt had scored to open the second period. Izaiah Hurtado drove the baseline and made a reverse lay up to answer a Dimmitt score to tie the game at 8-8.

Luke Leal made a pass to Hasley on the baseline for a basket to keep the game tied. The two teams exchanged baskets but the Mules missed a charity toss at the end of the half to trail 16-15.

The Mule defense held Dimmitt scoreless in the third period until near the 2:20 mark. Hurtado had been a terror and scored three baskets in the span of 90 seconds early in the third quarter.

Hasley again hit from the elbow and Josh Torres picked off a Bobcat pass at mid court and drove the floor for a hoop. Vasquez made a pair of charity tosses and the Mules led 27-18 with one period left to play.  

Del Toro sank a running jump shot to start the final frame. Rodriguez followed on a fast break and put back the missed shot. Vasquez answered a Dimmitt basket with a 10-foot jump shot.

Brady Martinez drove the lane and dished to Vasquez for the easy basket. Rodriguez turned in the lane for the final basket of the game.

Hurtado led the Mules with eight points with six coming in the third quarter. Vasquez, Rodriquez and Del Toro finished with six points each. Hasley made five points. Torres, Ethan Villa and Brady Martinez chipped in two points apiece.

The Mules played in the Levelland Lobo Tournament January 8 and 10. Littlefield host the Mules Monday evening and the Mules travel to Friona January 19 and return home January 26 to host the Tulia Hornets.

The Lady Mules entered the Texico Wolverine Tournament with a full head of steam and rattled the Tucumcari Lady Rattlers 54-23. But it was all heart break for the Lady Mules the rest of the tournament as they lost to Farwell in the final period 66-60  and to Navajo Prep in the final two minutes 42-39.

Conley Niblett put back an offensive rebound to break the scoring ice for the Lady Mules against the Rattlers. She later added a pair of free throws. Shanice Rosas made a charity toss and Dani Diaz took a pass from Sadie Sudduth and scored a hoop.

Sa. Sudduth made a 3-pointer from the wing and Sydnie Sudduth scored just prior to the end of the quarter. The Lady Mules led 12-2 at the end of the period.

Sy. Sudduth made a trey from the top of the key to start the second quarter. Yvonne Diaz scored in the paint and added a pair of free throws later in the quarter. Reagan Reynolds hit from six feet and Sasha Esparza added a bucket. Sa. Sudduth made a pair of free throws to extend the Lady Mule lead to 25-5 at the half.

Sy. Sudduth led the Lady Mules with three baskets in the third quarter. The Lady Mules out scored the Rattlers 29-18 in the second half.

Sy. Sudduth set the scoring pace with 13 points and Niblett finished with eight. Sa. Sudduth dropped in seven points, Reynolds made six and Angie Perez made all five of her points in the final quarter. D. Diaz, Y. Diaz and Esparza finished with four points each. Rosas chipped in three points.

Niblett drove the lane to open the game against Farwell for a basket. Sy Sudduth gave the Lady Mules a 4-0 lead. Farwell cut the lead to 4-3 but D. Diaz hit a trey from the top of the key on an inbound play.

Niblett made a free throw and Perez scored from inside the free throw line to answer a pair of free throws by Farwell. D. Diaz finished a break after a half-court pass by Sy. Sudduth. Farwell trimmed the Lady Mule lead to 12-9 by end of the first quarter.

Farwell cut the Lady Mule lead to 18-17 with five minutes left in the first half. D. Diaz made four free throws and Y. Diaz added two more. Farwell cut the Lady Mule lead to 24-20 but D. Diaz broke down the back door for a hoop to end the half with the Lady Mules leading 26-20.

Farwell hit a trey to start the second half but Niblett answered with a drive down the center of the lane for a basket. The Lady Mules clung to a 42-38 lead going into the final quarter.

Farwell went on a 7-0 run to start the final quarter to take a 45-42 lead over the Lady Mules. Sa. Sudduth went coast-to-coast for a hoop. She took a pass from Rosas the next trip down the floor and sank a trey from the top of the key.

The two teams battled back and forth for the advantage but Farwell took the lead to stay with two and half minutes left to play.

D. Diaz led the Lady Mules with 21 points that included eight-of-10 free throws and three 3-pointers. Niblett made 12 points and Sy. Sudduth finished with 11. Sa. Sudduth added eight points with all coming in the final quarter. Y. Diaz made four points. Rosas and Perez chipped in two points each.

The Lady Mules jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first period against Navajo Prep with D. Diaz dropping in a pair of free throws to start the Lady Mule scoring. She added a trey, a two-point basket and a free throw for eight points in the first period.

Sa. Sudduth started with a free throw, then made a basket and nailed a trey. Y. Diaz chipped in a free throw.

The two teams made seven points each in the second quarter to end the half with the Lady Mules leading 22-16 at the break.

Navajo Prep chipped two points off the Lady Mule lead in the third period by out scoring the Lady Mules 15-13. The Lady Mules could not hold up to the pressure as Navajo Prep out scored the Lady Mules 11-4.

Sa. Sudduth made four treys and made 17 points in the effort. D. Diaz made eight of her 10 points in the first quarter. Sy. Sudduth made two treys and eight points all in the second half. Esparza scored two points. Y. Diaz and Rosas chipped in one point each.

The Lady Mules hosted the Bovina Fillies in their last non-district game Tuesday night and travel to Shallowater Friday to play a second set of Fillies to open district. The Lady Mules return home the following Tuesday to host the Dimmitt Bobbies.

The Mules may have had too much turkey and dressing for Christmas dinner to play the Tucumcari Rattlers Monday in the Texico Wolverine Tournament. The Mules trailed the Rattlers 28-27 at the half but the Rattlers dominated in the second half to take the game 61-45.

The Mules bounced back to pluck the Eunice Cardinals in Consolation bracket 56-37 and all but tripled the Capitan Tigers 72-25 to bring home the Consolation trophy in time to celebrate the start of 2015.

Dagen Dunham and Jason Florez led the Mules in the losing cause against Tucumcari. Danny Campos broke the scoring ice for the Mules with a pair of free throws in the opening period. He added a pair of baskets later in the period for all six of his points in the game.

Florez made a pair of hoops in the opening frame and JJ Gandara drained a 3-pointer from the corner. Blayne Shipman made one from the charity line. Dunham made a lay up to finish a fast break and the Mules led 16-15 after one period. 

Gandara dished to Dunham to finish a break to open the second quarter. Dunham stuck back a pair of offensive rebounds later in the period. Tony Castillo sank a trey and Josh Lopez drove coast-to-coast for a basket. The Mules trailed 28-27 at the intermission.

The Rattlers were hot in the second half and out scored the Mules 33-18 for the win.

Dunham led the Mules with 14 points and Florez finished with 11. Castillo made a pair of treys for his six points and Campos had all six of his points in the first quarter. Gandara made a trey in the opening period for his three points. Lopez and Grey Johnson made two points each and Shipman chipped in one point.

The Mules opened their game against Eunice with a 10-0 scoring run. Florez led the charge for the Mules in the game but only scored two points in the first period. Campos scored the Mules first basket and chipped in a free throw later in the quarter.

Dunham hit a bucket from the blocks extended and later added one from the free throw line. Gandara got the ball to Shipman on the blocks and he turned in the lane and scored. Lopez followed the lead of Campos and Dunham with a basket and a charity toss.

Wesley Clarkson ended the first period with a 3-pointer from the corner. The Mules led 16-4 after one quarter. 

Florez put the pedal to the medal in the second period and opened the frame with a drive from the right side for a hoop. Dunham saw Florez breaking through the back door and made the pass to him. Florez kissed the ball off the glass for a hoop.

As the quarter ticketed away Florez added a third hoop, made two free throws and sank a 3-pointer for 11 points in the period. The Cardinals left Dunham open on the arc and he nailed a 3-pointer. Castillo chipped in a free throw. The Mules led 33-13 at the half.

The Cardinals made a run at the Mules in the half but the Mules held them at arms length for the win.

Florez led the Mules with 19 points and Campos finished with 10 points. Dunham scored all eight of his points in the first three periods. Clarkson added a trey in the final period for six points, Castillo dropped in five points and Lopez made four. Shipman and Johnson chipped in two points each.

The Mules tamed the Tigers of Capitan in the opening period by racing out to a 23-5 lead. After two more period the Mules had the Tigers sitting quietly on a stool and scored no points while the Mules poured in 18.

Just 18 seconds into the game Campos had the Mules on the board with a basket. He had added two more hoops by the end of the quarter. The Mules dominated the boards and made six put-back hoops.

Castillo and Campos paced the Mules with 14 points each. Dunham and Florez finished with 12 points apiece. Johnson scored all six of his points with three hoops in a span of minute and a half in the final period.

Tony Vasquez and Gandara added four points each. Clarkson, Lopez and Jesse Leal chipped in two points each.

The Mules finally had a home game Tuesday, January 6, when they hosted the Bovina Mustangs. The Mules remain at home Friday to host the always tough Idalou Wildcats. The game times have changed for the Idalou games with the JV Mules playing at 5:00 PM and the Mules take the floor at 6:30.

The Lubbock Roosevelt Eagles could not fly high enough to control Dagan Dunham in the paint Tuesday night in Acuff. Dunham paced the Mules with 25 points to lead the Mules to a 48-31 win over the Eagles. 

“Some nights are strikes for us and others are gutter balls,” said Mule coach Clay White. “But I would class tonight as a spare. At times we looked good and others we had to scramble to get our feet back under us.”

Jason Florez made the inbound pass to Dunham and he scored on the play. Florez scored with a six-foot jumper on the left side on the next trip down the floor. Josh Lopez picked an Eagles’ pocket and drove the floor but missed the lay up. Dunham was following on the play and put back the rebound to put the Mules up 6-0 two minutes into the game. 

The Eagles hit back-to-back baskets before JJ Gandara drained a trey from the right wing. The Eagles made a pair from the charity stripe. Dunham missed his shot but soared for his own rebound and banked the put back off the glass for a hoop. 

The Eagles scored before the period ended to trail the Mules 11-8. 

Roosevelt opened the second period with a free throw. Tony Castillo made the perfect pass to Dunham in the paint and he had to fight through a foul to score. Dunham completed the three-point play by sinking the free throw. 

Wesley Clarkson sent the ball high and Dunham went up and got it and scored in the paint. Castillo was fouled out front and made a free throw. The Eagles scored a basket but Dunham answered with a pair free throws. 

Chamel Regalado sent the ball ahead to Florez to score on a fast break. The Eagles scored with 3:20 left in the first half but the Mules led 21-13. Roosevelt saved the ball on the Mules end of the floor but Blayne Shipman grabbed the ball. Shipman dribbled once and put the ball on the glass for a hoop. 

Florez ended the first half like he started it. He made the inbound pass to Dunham and Dunham sank a 10-foot jumper to extend the Mule lead to 25-13 at the half. 

The Mules were slow out of the gate in the third period but a strange call by the officials at the end of the period seemed to wake the Mules up. Lopez fired up a 3-pointer that swished the net was waved off by the officials. Despite making the shot Lopez was awarded three free throws. Lopez made one of the three freebies. 

The Mules led 34-23 with eight minutes left to play. 

Dunham scored to start the final period. Clarkson was fouled shooting and made both free throws. The Eagles made a pair of free throws and Dunham answered with a 15-foot baseline jumper. Regalado was fouled in the backcourt and made both the free throw and the bonus shot. 

Dunham drove the right side and put up an eight-foot tear drop for a basket to extend the Mule lead to 44-25. Regalado passed to Danny Campos on the blocks and Campos turned a scored the hoop. 

The Eagles made back-to-back hoops. Castillo grabbed a defensive rebound and was shoved from behind for an intentional foul. He made one free throw but the Mule could not cash in on the extra possession. 

The Eagles added one more hoop and Regalado chipped in a free throw for the final point of the game. 

Florez finished with six points and Clarkson added four. Regalado and Gandara finished with three points each. Castillo, Shipman and Campos dropped in two points apiece and Lopez chipped in a point. 

The Mules will began to shake off the rust of the Christmas Holidays in the Texico Wolverine Tournament December 29-31 and then travel to Lamesa January 2 to play the Golden Tornadoes. The Mules will return home January 6 to host the Bovina Mustangs.
