9th Lady Mules vs. Littlefield (1-9-2017)
The freshmen Lady Mules were a little slow out of the gate Monday against the Littlefield Lady Cats. But the Lady Mules bounced back in the second and third quarters to pull away from the Cats. The Lady Mules hung on in the final period for a 21-20 win.
It took the Lady Mules a little over four minutes to score their only point of the first period. Emili Mora sank that free throw. But the Cats were only able to post three points to lead the Lady Mules 3-1 after one quarter.
Valarie Toscano sank the Lady Mules first basket in the second quarter. By the end of the first half, she had added the second hoop. Valeria Carreaga and Mora had chipped in two free throws each before the half ended. The Lady Mules led 9-7 at the intermission.
Mora kicked off the third quarter with a basket. Perla Vasquez and Toscano both made a hoop. Kylee Espenson picked off a Lady Cat pass and drove for a layup with just 12 seconds left in the quarter. The Lady Mules led 17-11 with one quarter left to play.
“We are not accustomed to playing with a lead starting the last quarter,” said Lady Mule coach, Ryan Miller. “But these girls have come a long way this season, and we will be working on ball control and clock management.”
Toscano used an assist from Anna Phillips to score the Lady Mules first hoop of the final quarter. Joceline Ramirez made the Lady Mules’ final basket of the game. The Cats took a shot just before the final buzzer that would have tied the game, but it caromed off the rim.
The Lady Mules traveled to Idalou Monday. Slaton and Dimmitt do not have freshmen teams so that the Lady Mules will complete their season on the road in Friona against the Maidens February 6.
