Lady Mules vs. Shallwater & Roosevelt (1-10 & 13-2017)
This past week was up and down for the Lady Mules. They traveled to Shallowater on Tuesday and earned a rare 38-34 win over the Fillies. But Friday all the joy was drained from the Lady Mules.
The Lubbock Roosevelt Lady Eagles came back in the second half to defeat the Lady Mules 50-37.
The Lady Mules got off to a very slow start in Shallowater. Sadie Sudduth made the Lady Mules only four points in the opening period. She made a pair of free throws and a layup while the Fillies pumped in nine points.
Sydnie Sudduth came alive in the second quarter and sank a pair of 3-pointers. Sa. Sudduth also scored from behind the arc. Emily Precure was fouled while shooting and made both free throws. Yvonne Diaz chipped in a charity toss.
The Lady Mules trailed 18-16 at the intermission.
The Lady Mules clamped down on defense in the third quarter and held the Fillies to just two free throws. Keely Dunham scored with a short jumper. Yvonne Diaz dominated the paint and scored three hoops. Sa. Sudduth and Reagan Reynolds added a basket each. The Lady Mules entered the final quarter leading the Fillies 28-20.
The Lady Mules gave up half of their eight-point advantages during the last quarter as they drained the final eight minutes off the clock. Sy. Sudduth made a pair of free throws to jump start the Lady Mules.
Sa. Sudduth took over the scoring for the balance of the final period. She first put back an offensive rebound. She later added two more hoops and a pair of free throws for the win.
Sa. Sudduth scored a game-high 17 points. Sy. Sudduth finished with eight points that included a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws. Diaz added seven points. Reynolds, Precure, and Dunham chipped in two points each.
Friday was a different story when the Lady Mules hosted the Lubbock Roosevelt Lady Eagles. The game started out as a defensive battle and Reynolds dropped in a 3-pointer from the corner with just over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Sy. Sudduth also scored a trey and Sa. Sudduth made a driving layup. The Lady Mules led 8-4 after the first eight minutes.
Diaz added to the Lady Mule lead with a pair of free throws. Precure and Reynolds each scored a hoop to extend the Lady Mule lead to 10 points. After that, the Lady Eagles came alive.
Payton Brown sank back-to-back long distance treys. The Eagles outscored the Lady Mules 15-12 in the second period to cut the Lady Mule lead to 20-19 by the end of the first half.
Dunham got the Lady Mules started in the second half with a jumper in the paint. She put back an offensive rebound before the third quarter ended. Barrera made a pair of hoops and Sy. Sudduth added one basket.
The Eagles had outrun the Lady Mules 17-10 in the third quarter to extend the Roosevelt lead to 36-30.
The Eagles controlled the final quarter and outscored the Lady Mules 16-10. The Lady Mules did not score until the four-minute mark when Sa. Sudduth scored with a drive. She late had added a free throw.
Reynolds and Dunham scored a basket each.
Sy. Sudduth scored all nine of her points in the first three periods. Sa. Sudduth and Reynolds added seven points each. Dunham finished with six points, and Barrera dropped in four points. Diaz chipped in two points.
The Lady Mules are currently locked in a five-way tie for first place in District 2-3A with a record of 5-2. The Lady Mules hosted the 5-2 Lady Cats of Littlefield Tuesday night. Friday the Lady Mules traveled to Idalou to tangle with the second team of Lady Cats. January 24 the Lady Mules will travel to Dimmitt to battle the Bobbies.
