The Lady Mules had a tough week losing 10-0 Tuesday afternoon to the Shallowater Fillies and the Lubbock Roosevelt Lady Eagles 7-5 Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Mule bats were all but silent Tuesday against the visiting Fillies. Madison Hasley collected the Lady Mules’ first hit of the day in the bottom of the third inning.
The Lady Mules stranded three runners in the bottom of the third inning, two in the lower part of the fourth and one in the fifth inning.
The Shallowater Fillies out hit the Lady Mules 10-5.
Saturday was an up and down battle with the Lady Eagles of Roosevelt. Mireya Ruvalcaba single to left field to lead off the game. She scored on a double to right field by Ahtziri Elizalde to put the Lady Mules on top 1-0 in the top half of the first inning.
Victoria Villalobos held the Lady Eagles scoreless for three innings. She walked the first batter she faced in the game. A stolen base and a passed ball put the runner on third base. A fly ball to left field was caught by Dellany Martinez for the first out and the runner held at third.
Villalobos struck out the next batter for the second out. The fourth batter drew a walk, and the runner at third attempted to steal home, but Felicity Sena applied the tag for the third out to end the inning.
Roosevelt loaded the bases with one out in the second inning. Villalobos recorded her second strikeout of the game and a ground ball to Melody Moran at first ended the inning with the Eagles not having scored a run.
Martinez single with a ground ball up the middle to lead off the top of the fourth inning. Villalobos slammed a ball over the centerfield fence to score two runs and put the Lady Mules up 3-0.
The bottom of the fourth inning was the start of the end for the Lady Mules. An error allowed Roosevelt’s first batter to reach base that scored. The Eagles scored three runs on four hits to tie the game and give the Eagles new life.
The Lady Mules went in order in the top of the fifth inning while the Eagles scored one run on four hits to take a 4-3 lead over the Lady Mules.
The Lady Mules regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Crystal Flores singled up the middle to start the inning and then stole second base. Brittney Mendoza singled to deep right field to score Flores.
Martinez dropped a bunt single in front of home plate to move Mendoza to second. Sena sent a ground ball to deep right field to advance the runners. Mendoza was thrown out at home attempting to score from third. Martinez did steal home before the final out and put the Lady Mules in front 5-4.
Two hit batsmen and an error by the Lady Mules allowed three Eagles to score in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-5 Eagle lead.
The Lady Mules could not score in the top of the seventh inning.

The 2-2 Lady Mules hosted the Slaton Tigerettes Monday afternoon at 5:00 PM. The game was changed to Monday because of the District 2-3A track meet. The Lady Mules will host the Idalou Lady Cats Friday afternoon at 4:30 PM.

The Muleshoe High School golf team competed, Monday, March 27, in the first District 2-3A tournament. The tournament was held on the course at Plainview Country Club. The Lady Mules are currently in second place, and the Mules hold down third place in district competition.

The top two teams will advance to the Region I Tournament that will be held on the Shady Oaks Golf Course at Baird.

The Shallowater girls lead the district with a first round total of 379. The Lady Mules are in second place with a total of 405 shots. Idalou is third with 482 strokes, Slaton is in fourth with a 497, Roosevelt is fifth with a 511, and Dimmitt is in sixth place with a 574.

The Mules are currently in third place with a first round total of 394 shots behind a pair of Shallowater teams with first round totals of 332 and 384. Slaton is fourth with 395 strokes, Idalou is fifth with a 405, Friona is sixth with a 417, Dimmitt is seventh with a 488 and Littlefield is eighth with 490 shots.

Sadie Sudduth paced the Lady Mules with a first round total of 91 shots. Sydnie Sudduth finished with 98 strokes, and Emily Precure fired a 99. Yvonne Diaz and Leti Loya finished with rounds of 117 and 118 respectively.

Jason Florez led the Mules with a first round total of 90 strokes. Brendon Rodriguez had a total of 98 shots. Wyatt Parker and Ricky Diaz had first round totals of 102 and 104 shots strokes respectively.

The district will be decided April 3 on the Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock.

The Muleshoe High School tennis team played in the South Plains Christian Home Educators

Association Tennis Tournament in Levelland Thursday afternoon. MHS had 29 participants

involved in 55 matches, and they won eight medals.

The tournament was divided into Division A and Division B.

Yavet Elizalde earned the consolation medal in in Boys Division A Singles. He lost to Wellman

Union 7-9 but bounced back to defeat Littlefield 8-0 and Shallowater 8-1.

Also competing in the Boys Singles Division A was Jacob Kettner, Aron Chacon, and Tre Villa.

Kettner beat Lockney 8-3 but lost to Shallowater 1-8 and Seagraves 5-8. Chacon defeated

Wellman Union 8-6 but lost to Hart 6-8. Villa fell to Seagraves 6-8, beat Littlefield 8-6 and lost to

Hart 1-8.

Cassidy Cage won the consolation medal in the Girls Singles Division A. She lost to Hart 7-9 but

came back to beat Littlefield 8-2 and Gloria Gonzales of Muleshoe 8-6.

Gonzales lost to Hart 1-8, beat Lockney 8-2 before falling to Cage 6-8.

Hallie Myatt and Sadie Sudduth earned the bronze medals in Girls Division A Doubles. They

defeated SPCHEA 8-3, lost to Shallowater, and beat the Muleshoe team of Yvonne Diaz and

Sydnie Sudduth 8-5 for the medals.

Diaz and Sy. Sudduth beat Shallowater 8-6 but lost to SPCHEA 6-8 and the Muleshoe team of

Myatt and Sa. Sudduth 5-8. There were no results for the team of Xiomara Regalado and Erika

Arzola.

Jason Florez and Liliana Barrera won the bronze medal in Division A Mixed Doubles. The team

beat Littlefield 8-5, lost to SPCHEA 6-8, defeated Wellman Union 8-3 for the medals. Izaiah Perez

and Jade Fabela lost to Shallowater 5-8 and Littlefield 6-8.

Carter McCamish won the bronze medal in Division B Boys Singles. He beat Shallowater 8-3, fell

to Sundown 6-8 but bounced back to beat Littlefield 8-6 for the medal.

Sophia Sianez won the teams’ only gold medal. She earned her gold in the Girls Division B

Singles by beating Littlefield 8-0, SPCHEA 8-1, and SPCHEA 8-2 for the medal.

Anghey Avilez won a silver medal in the same division. She beat Loop 8-5, Denver City 8-3, but

fell to Shallowater 5-8. Perla Vasquez lost to Shallowater 2-8 and Littlefield 6-8. There were no

results for Laura Chavez.

Derek Barron and Kelan Florez teamed up in Division B Boys Doubles for the consolation medal.

The team lost to SPCHEA 3-8 but came back to defeat Seagraves 8-6 and Shallowater 8-6. Ricardo

Torres and Kobe Gutierrez beat Shallowater 8-2 and lost to Denver City 4-8.

MHS entered two teams in Division B Girls Doubles. Brylee Beall and Jackie Rayas beat

Springlake-Earth 8-8 (7-3) and lost to Sundown 2-8. Adriana Mora and Anna Phillips beat

Springlake-Earth 8-5, Lockney 8-8 (7-4), lost to Happy 8-8 (4-7) and lost to SPCHEA 3-6.

The MHS tennis team will return to Levelland April 6 for another SPCHEA Tournament at South

Plains College. The District 2-3A tennis tournament will be held April 10 and 11 on the campus of

South Plains College.

Extra outs in the fourth inning allowed Littlefield to score six runs for an insurmountable lead Saturday afternoon in the Mules District 2-3A opener. Littlefield took the day 12-2 in five innings.

Jason Florez started on the mound for the Mules and struck out two in the first inning and two more in the second to hold Littlefield scoreless.

JoJo Rejino took the count full before drawing a walk to leadoff the bottom of the second inning. He stole second base on the first pitch. Ryan Rodriguez singled to left field to move Rejino to third and stole second base.

A single down the third base line by Ethan Villa scored both Rejino and Rodriguez to put the Mules on top 2-0. The Mules’ bats went silent after that.

Littlefield answered with four runs in the top of the third to take the lead for good. Littlefield scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 10-run lead.

The Mules traveled to Shallowater Tuesday to play the Mustangs and stay on the road Saturday to play the Lubbock Roosevelt Eagles.

The Lady Mules opened District 2-3A competition Tuesday and hung on for a 6-5 win over the Idalou Lady Cats. Saturday the Lady Mules exploded on the Littlefield Lady Cats for a 15-5 five-inning win.

The Lady Mules fell behind 2-1 to Idalou in the second inning. The Lady Mules took the lead in the top of the fourth inning with two runs. Brittney Mendoza led off with a walk on four straight pitches.

Victoria Villalobos sent a ground ball by the shortstop for a single. Felicity Sena sent a sacrifice ground ball to shallow left field to advance Mendoza to third and Villalobos to second.

Melody Moran blasted a line drive single to right field to score both Mendoza and Villalobos.

Idalou tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning with one run. Melody Moran blasted a one-out single up the middle in the top of the sixth inning. She stole second base and moved to third on a sacrifice by Noa Rojas. Mireya Ruvalcaba line a single to left field to score Moran and put the Lady Mules ahead for good.

Idalou went in order in the bottom of the sixth and trailed 4-3 after six complete innings.

Crystal Flores lined her fourth hit of the day up the middle for a single to leadoff the top of the seventh inning. Ahtziri Elizalde grounded up the middle for a single. Flores and Elizalde pulled off a double steal to advance to second and third bases.

Mendoza walked to load the bases with no outs. Flores and Elizalde scored on a sacrifice ground ball by Villalobos to put the Lady Mules up by three runs.

The Lady Mules hung on in the bottom of the seventh inning. The first batter grounded out to Mendoza at third base. The second batter lofted a fly to Elizalde in centerfield for the second out.

A single and a walk turned into two runs for Idalou before Noa Rojas drifted under a fly to right field to preserve the win.

Flores led the Lady Mules with a double, three singles and scored a run. Moran doubled and singled twice and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

Moran laced a shot to the fence in left center to score Villalobos for the Lady Mules fifteenth run and end the game on the run-rule against Littlefield.

Littlefield jumped on top early with one run in each of the first two innings and three runs in the top of the third inning.

The Lady Mules scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good.

Ruvalcaba lined a shot off the glove of the third baseman to open the bottom half of the third inning. She then stole second base. An error allowed Dellany Martinez to reach first base and moved Ruvalcaba to third base. Martinez stole second base on the first pitch to Flores.

Flores popped out to first base before Elizalde slammed a triple to centerfield to score Ruvalcaba and Martinez. Mendoza doubled to score Elizalde. Villalobos dribbled the ball down the third-base line for an infield single.

Mendoza scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5. Madison Hasley singled to left field to put the Lady Mules on top for good Villalobos crossed the plate. Sena singled to center field, and Madison Hasley hit a line drive to right field.

Ruvalcaba’s second hit of the inning scored both Sena and Hasley to put the Lady Mules on top 8-5.

Littlefield did not collect a hit in the final two innings.

Hasley’s one-out single to leftfield in the bottom of the fifth inning spelled the beginning of the end for Littlefield. Ruvalcaba dropped a bunt in front of the plate for an infield single. Hasley was running on the pitch, and both Lady Mules were safe.

Martinez singled to right field to score Hasley. Flores walked, and Elizalde reached on an infield hit and Ruvalcaba scored. Mendoza drew a walk. A double to center by Villalobos scored Flores, Elizalde, and Mendoza.

Moran’s blast ended the game.

Ruvalcaba collected three hits and scored two runs to lead the Lady Mules. Elizalde, Villalobos, Moran, and Hasley had two hits each. Martinez, Mendoza, and Sena collected one hit each.

The Lady Mules traveled to Shallowater Tuesday to play the Fillies and stay on the road Saturday when they play the Roosevelt Lady Eagles.

MHS Tennis (3-21-2017)

The Muleshoe High School tennis team competed in the Sundown Tennis Tournament Tuesday. Tournament matches were held at Sundown High School, South Plains College, Levelland High School and Levelland Middle School.

MHS had 34 participants that played in a total of 61 matches, and seven entries won medals. There were 310 players entered in the tournament.

Cassidy Cage won silver in the Varsity Girls Singles. She defeated Abernathy 8-0, Littlefield 8-6, Olton 8-3, and lost to Denver City 5-8 in the finals. Also in Girls Singles, Gloria Gonzales lost to Abernathy 0-8, defeated Olton 8-5, and lost to SPCHEA 2-8.

The Varsity Girls Doubles team, Hallie Myatt, and Sadie Sudduth earned the silver medals. They defeated Friona 8-3, SPCHEA 8-2, and lost to Olton 0-8 in the finals. The team of Yvonne Diaz and Sydnie Sudduth defeated Ralls 8-2 and lost to Olton 0-8.

The Varsity Boys Doubles team of Jesse Leal and Luke Leal took the bronze medals. They beat Olton 8-3, Sudan 9-7, and lost to SPCHEA 2-8. They bounced back defeat Plains 8-2 in the finals. Tre Villa and Donovan Gutierrez lost to Sudan 4-8, defeated Abernathy 8-6, and lost to Littlefield 6-8.

Aron Chacon competed in Varsity Boys Singles. He defeated Olton 8-2 and lost to Denver City 5-8.

The Varsity Mixed Doubles team of Jason Florez and Liliana Barrera beat Abernathy 8-1 and lost to Shallowater 5-8. Izaiah Perez and Jade Fabela lost to Farwell 2-8 and Sudan 6-8.

Xiomara Regalado and Erika Arzola placed second in the JV Girls Doubles. They defeated Denver City 8-3, Sundown 8-3, SPCHEA 8-0, Abernathy 8-4, and lost to Sundown 2-8 in the finals.

Brylee Beall and Jackie Rayas defeated Sundown 8-4 and lost to Plains 2-8. Brianna Barron and Kyndal Miller defeated Sundown 8-6 and fell to Abernathy 5-8.

The JV Boys Doubles team of Jacob Kettner and Ean Hasley earned the silver medals. They defeated Plains 8-4, Littlefield 8-2, Denver City 8-3 and lost to Sundown 2-8. Derek Barron and Kelan Florez defeated Friona 8-1, Shallowater 8-2 and lost to Sundown 3-8.

Javy Perez and Laura Chavez earned the bronze medals in the JV Mixed Doubles. They defeated Sudan 8-2, Friona 8-2, lost to Shallowater 2-8, and defeated Sundown 8-3 in the finals. Jimmy Villa and Perla Vasquez lost to Littlefield 6-8, beat Abernathy 8-1 and lost to Dimmitt 7-9.

Ethan Gonzales won consolation in the JV Boys Singles. He lost to SPCHEA 0-8, then beat Friona 8-3, Plains 8-8, 9-7 in the tiebreaker, and Denver City 8-6 in the finals. Raul Sierra defeated Olton 8-2 and had to default the rest of his matches to attend JV Baseball in Dimmitt. Luke Del Toro beat Friona 8-2 and lost to Olton 5-8.

Sophia Sianez lost to Abernathy 6-8, beat Morton 8-2 and Plains 2-8 in JV Girls Singles. Anghey Avilez defeated Plains 8-1, Littlefield 8-5 and lost to Sundown 1-8.

The next tournament for MHS tennis is March 30 at South Plains College in Levelland.

The Muleshoe High School golf teams competed Thursday at the Holy Cross Invitational Tournament held on the Comanche Trails Golf Course in Amarillo. The Lady Mules placed second as a team while the Mules finished fourth.


Sadie Sudduth led the Lady Mules and finished the course in 96 strokes. She placed second as an individual. Sydnie Sudduth finished with a score of 115 and Emily Precure was three shots behind with 118 shots. Yvonne Diaz shot 130, and Leti Loya finished with a 134.


Kiarra Regalado and Adrianna Mora competed as individual medalist with rounds of 137 and 141 shots respectively.


Wyatt Parker led the Mules with a score 93 shots, Ricky Diaz shot an even 100, Jason Florez finished with a 103 and Brendon Rodriguez fired a 126.


“Both teams played very well in the Holy Cross Tournament,” said Mule golf coach Steven Butler. “I was very proud of how the athletes competed with the wind and a very tough course.”

The first District 2-3A Tournament was held Monday, March 27, at the Plainview Country Club. The second round of district competition will be the following Monday, April 3, at the Meadowbrook Golf Course.
