Mules vs. Childress (10-24-2014)

The Mule defense smothered the running game of Childress and held the Bobcats to just nine yards on 19 rushes. Two Mule miscues allowed Childress to hang close in the first half. But the Mules came out firing on all cylinders in the second half to defeat Childress 44-14.

“The long ride did not hurt us tonight,” said Mule coach David Wood. “Childress was not the longest trip for us this year and I believe that made a big difference. It was good night for us.”

“Everybody got in the game again tonight. It has been three games since we have had to call on Wesley Clarkson to punt for us. That is a very good feeling. Now we get to go home and start getting ready for the Dimmitt Bobcats.”

The Mules kicked off to start the game and Childress returned the kick to the Bobcat 43. Roman Franco made an open field tackle on third down. The Bobcats were five-yards short of a first down and had to punt.

Danny Campos connected with Saul Sanchez for an eight-yard gain on third down. The Mules needed two yards for a first down at the Mule 49. Campos used a hard count to draw the Bobcats offside.

The Mules continued with their play and Campos tossed the ball over the defender. Jason Florez climbed the ladder to pull down the pass for a 24-yard gain. Josh Lopez gained nine yards on first down.

Campos got the first down with a four-yard run up the middle. The Mule drive bogged down at the Childress 11. Felipe Guerrero used his left foot to put the Mules on top to stay with a 28-yard field goal. The Mules led 3-0 with 6:38 remaining in the first quarter.

The Mules forced the Bobcats to go three-and-out. The punt took a Mule bounce and rolled dead on the Mule 38. Campos located Sanchez for a nine-yard pass. Lopez took a short pass wide right for 13 yards to the Childress 40.

Keagan Gonzales came in at quarterback and had runs of seven, five and 18 yards to advance the Mules to the Bobcat 10. Sanchez got open in the end zone and Gonzales delivered him the ball. Guerrero’s point after kick was good and the Mules led 10-0 with 1:17 left in the first quarter.

It was three-and-out for the Bobcats early in the second period and Florez returned the punt 11 yards to the Mule 39. The Mules quickly marched down field and Gonzales scored on a quarterback sweep that he cut up field early.

Jaxon Lee took out two Bobcats to clear Gonzales path. He scored from 36-yards out. Guerrero’s kick put the Mules ahead 17-0 with 8:29 left in the half.

The Mules fumbled and two plays later Childress scored on a 55-yard pass from Luke Darter to Kaden Keys. The kick was good and Childress trailed 17-7 with 8:02 to play in the first half.

The Mules turned the ball over again on interception but the Bobcats could not cash in on the miscue and was forced to punt. Kevin Mendoza came off the edge and got a hand on the Childress punt. Braden Bessire spotted the short punt and caught the ball at the Mule 34. No Bobcats could get close to Bessire as he raced 66 yards for a touchdown to extend the Mule lead to 23-7.

The Bobcats turned a Mule fumble into seven points with just one second left the half. Bryce Bowman connected with Jantzen Martinez. The kick was good and the Mules led 23-14 at the intermission.

The Mules wasted no time after the break and drove 67 yards in six plays. Gonzales teamed up with Cristian Paez with a 32-yard pass and run. Guerrero kicked the point after for a 30-14 Mule lead with 9:29 remaining in the third quarter.

A high snap that went over the punter’s head and the Mules took over on the Childress 23. Gonzales scored on a 15-yard run to the right. Guerrero tacked on the point after for a 37-14 Mule lead.

The Mules final touchdown came early in the final period. It took the Mules 13 plays to drive 63 yards and erased 5:52 off the clock. Gonzales pushed in from one yard out. Guerrero added the extra point.

The Mule offense rolled up 440 yards of offense with 316 being on the ground and 124 yards were through the air. Gonzales rushed 20 times for 150 yards and was six of seven passing for 70 yards. He ran for three touchdowns and passed for two.

Lopez rushed 13 times for 116 yards and caught three passes for nine yards. Campos ran four times for 14 yards and was five of eight passing for 54 yards. Paez carried four times for 13 yards and caught one pass for 31 yards.

Florez caught two passes for 23 yards, Sanchez made two catches for 20 yards, Tony Vasquez had one reception for 22 yards and Chamel Regalado caught two pass for 18 yards.

The Mule defense held Childress to a total of 165 yards. Franco led the Mules with nine tackles, broke up a pass and made two special teams tackles. Kevin Mendoza had six stops, one quarterback hurry, blocked a kick and made three special teams tackles.

Issac Acosta made six tackles, two quarterback hurries and two special teams tackles. Chamel Regalado had six tackles, one being for a loss and broke up two passes. Javy Perez made five stops with two being special teams tackles.

Braden Bessire had four tackles, one quarterback hurry, broke up a pass and scored a touchdown. Dagen Dunham made four tackles and one quarterback hurry. 

The Mules play at home Friday night against the Dimmitt Bobcats. It is Senior Night and the Seniors will be introduced at 7:00 PM.

The Childress Bobcats leaped in front of the JV Mules Thursday. The Bobcats had scored two touchdowns and an extra point to lead the Mules 13-0 by the 8:24 mark of the second period.

The Mules came roaring back after that to score 28 unanswered points. The Mules defeated the Bobcats 28-13 to improve to 3-0 in district.

Bryce Mauricio kicked off for the Mules and Childress recovered the short kick at mid field. The Bobcats drove to the Mule 18 before Aaryn Ross picked off a Bobcat pass at the Mule one-yard line. Ross returned to the Mule 34.

The two teams exchanged punts through the balance of the first quarter as neither team could sustain a drive. But the Bobcats returned the Mules’ final punt of the first period to the Mule 24. Two plays into the second period Childress scored on a nine-yard run. The Bobcats led 6-0 with 9:47 remaining in the first half.

Brandon Chavez returned the ensuing kickoff to the Mule 45. Jesse Easiley broke up the middle for 12 yards. Ross kept wide right for 39 yards to the Childress 18. Easily pounded up the middle to the Bobcat five-yard line. A high snap over Ross’s head gave the Bobcats the ball on the Childress 21.

A Bobcat pass to the sideline resulted in a 79-yard Childress touchdown. The point-after kick was good and the Bobcats on led 13-0 with 8:24 left in the half.

Easily returned the Bobcat kick to the Mule 27. Ross located Matt Flores open on a slant route for seven yards. Evan Paez went up the middle for six yards and Ross ran the quarterback sweep for 12 yards to near mid field.

Paez was tackled by his facemask after an 11-yard gain. The run plus the penalty moved the Mules to the Childress 21. Paez took the option pitch five yards. Ross passed to Flores running a slant over the middle for 10 yards.

Ross scored on a six-yard quarterback sweep. Ross tossed to Paez for the two-point conversion and the Mules trailed 13-8 with just under four minutes left in the half. 

It was three-and-out for the Bobcats after the Mule kickoff. Chavez and Donovan Gutierrez plugged up the middle on second down. The Bobcats fumbled on third down but recovered at the Childress 40. The Childress punt rolled dead on the Mule 30.

Ross raced wide left for 36 yards to the Bobcat 34. Ross tossed to Flores. He caught the wide-receiver screen pass and raced 30-yards to the Childress one-yard line. Ross sneaked in to put the Mules ahead 14-13 with 41 seconds remaining in the half.

The Bobcats’ second half kickoff went out of bounds at the Mule 44. After the five-yard penalty the Mules started their first scoring-drive of the second half at the Mule 49.

A pass-interference penalty moved the Mules to the Childress 36. Paez pounded the ball up the middle for 11 yards. Ross then took the deep snap and started wide right. He cut back behind his blockers and was not hit until he reached the five-yard line.

Ross broke that tackle and scored on the 20-yard run to put the Mules on top 20-13 with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter.

The Bobcats ate up most of the fourth period on an drive that ended on the Mule10-yard line. Dominik Hasley made the stop a yard short of a first on fourth down.

A facemask penalty advanced the Mules to their 25. Paez raced through a gaping hole in the middle of the Bobcat defense and went 75 yards for the Mules’ final touchdown. Ross passed to Chavez open in the end zone for the two-point conversion and the final points of the game.

The Mules rushed for 286 yards and passed for 59 for a total of 345 yards. Evan Paez led the Mule offense with 11 carries for 125 yards. Aaryn Ross ran nine times for 118 yards and Jesse Easiley carried five times for 43 yards.

Aaryn Ross made touchdown runs of one, 20 and five yards. Evan Paez had a 75-yard TD run. Matt Flores caught three passes for 27 yards, Bryce Mauricio made one reception for 30 yards and Boo Flores made one catch for two yards.

Donavan Gutierrez led the Mule defense with 14 tackles. Boo Flores had seven stops, Matt Flores made 10 tackles and Rodrigo Rivas had six stops. Dylan Miller also made six tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and two big hits. Aaryn Ross had an interception in the end zone.

The 3-0 Mules will travel to Dimmitt to battle more Bobcats Thursday night.

9th Mules vs. Plainview (10-23-2014)

The freshmen Mules rolled over the Plainview Bulldogs 50-0 Thursday evening. Michael Lozano returned the opening kick to the Mule 43. Isaac Mendoza scored on a 53-yard run on the Mules’ second play but it was called back to the Plainview 31 because of a penalty.

But it was only a slight set back for the Mules. Mendoza tossed a swing pass to Arnulfo Hernandez and the play went for 11 yards. Hernandez went left and was taken down by his facemask. When the dust settled the Mules had a first and goal at the Plainview three-yard line.

Mendoza scored on a three-yard run to put the Mules on top to stay with 7:15 remaining in the first quarter. The Mules led 6-0.

Hernandez kicked off out of bounds at the Plainview 32. Zach Atwood made the tackle after a three-yard Plainview gain. Carlos Meza and Joe Waggoner got in the Bulldog backfield for a two-yard loss. An incomplete pass forced the Bulldogs to punt.

The punt sailed to the Mule 32. Lozano caught the punt and returned the ball to the right and scooted 68 yards for a touchdown. Mendoza put a pancake block on the gunner to set Lozano free. Mendoza located Jeremiah Smith open in the end zone for the two-point conversion. The Mules led 14-0 with 5:12 left in the first period.

Hernandez kicked off to the Bulldog end zone. It was three-and-out for Plainview with a loss of a yard on the three plays. Waggoner made a solo tackle for no gain on first down. Waggoner then teamed up with Coleman Preston for a stop after a two-yard gain.

A motion penalty backed the Bulldogs up five yards. Carlos Hernandez tackled the Bulldog running back after a two-yard gain. The Plainview punt rolled out of bounds at the Mule 43.

Mendoza connected with JoJo Rejino for 14 yards on first down to the Plainview 43. A. Hernandez made a swing pass to Mendoza for seven yards. Lozano got the ball on a reverse and raced 41 yards for a touchdown with 21 seconds remaining in the first period. The Mules led 21-0 after one period.

Meza recovered a Plainview fumble at the Bulldog 47. Mendoza threw to Lozano and he scooted 47 yards for a touchdown with 6:44 left in the half. Mendoza connected with Jacob Kettner for the two-point conversion and 29-0 Mule lead.

After the Mule kickoff the Bulldogs could only gain five yards on four plays. The Mules took over on downs at the Plainview 42. Lozano took the Hammer pitch up the middle for 13 yards and then scored on the Hammer play from 25-yards out with 3:08 left in the half. A. Hernandez kicked the extra point for a 36-0 Mule lead.

The Mules recovered a Bulldog fumble at the Plainview 27. A. Hernandez connected with Rejino and the play was good for 23 yards. Rejino scored from four-yards out on the Hammer. A. Hernandez booted the extra point for a 43-0 Mule lead with just over a minute left in the first half.

The clock was allowed to continually run in the second half. Plainview got the ball to start the second half and marched from the Bulldog 35 to the Mule 30 before running out of downs early in the final period.

Atwood scored the Mules’ final TD on a five-yard Hammer play.

The Mules are open Thursday night and will host the Denver City Mustangs November 6 to close out the season.

Cross-Country District Meet (10-21-2014)

Injuries had plagued the Lady Mule varsity cross-country team all season and the District 2-3A Meet on Lubbock’s Mae Simmons Park Course was no different. But the Lady Mules ran the two-mile course with Jazmine Garza placing eighth individually with a time of 13 minutes and 38 seconds.

Other Lady Mules competing were Mireya Ruvulcaba, Yvonne Diaz, Dani Diaz, Aimee Rosas, Cassidy Cage and Noemi Herrera.

Evan Paez led the Mules as well as all the other competitors around the three-mile course to win the individual gold medal with a time of 17:09. Michael Lozano, Christian Paez and Noah Del Toro also competed for the Mules.

“We could not have placed an order for a better running day,” said cross-country coach Edie Niblett. “It was an absolutely perfect day. Our athletes went to compete and they represented Muleshoe very well.”

Jazmine Garza and Evan Paez will both compete October 31 in the Region I Cross-Country Meet. The Meet will also be held on the Mae Simmons Park Course. The Class 3A girls will run at 11:00 AM and the boys will compete at 11:30 AM.

The JV Lady Mules won the District 2-3A Meet with five of the seven Lady Mules placing in the top ten. Ruby Regalado, Jazmin Arellano, Brianna Barron, Lilli Barrera, Blanca Ramirez, Brianna Velasquez and Ricarda Elizalde are the members of the JV Lady Mules.

Malachi Rodriguez won the JV Boys individual gold medal and Josh Mata finished fifth in the meet.

The Junior High Lady Mules won the District 2-3A Cross-Country Championship with a total of 33 points. Liliana Martinez led the Lady Mules around the two-mile Mae Simmons Park Course in Lubbock Monday afternoon. She won the individual gold medal and is now the two-time District 2-3A Individual Champion.

Joceline Ramirez finished fourth, Reina Regalado took eighth place and Alejandra Castillo placed eleventh. Valeria Carreaga, Natalie Diaz, Mercy Manzanales, Adriana Mora, Kinsey Parker, Mia Reyna, Anahi Sandoval, Val Toscano, Citlalli Vargas, Perla Vasquez, Jailyn Vidana, Chloe Villa and Alyssa Wheeler also competed for the Lady Mules.

The Mules also took the District 2-3A Championship with a total of 21 points. Jose Nava led the Mules on the three-mile course and won the individual silver medal. Ean Hasley took the bronze medal and Eduardo Pantoja finished fourth.

Damian Juarez was close behind for fifth place, Ethan Gonzales ran eighth and Beto Mendoza finished tenth. Jesus Montiel, Ricky Diaz, Luke Leal, Jacob Barron, Matt Fullen, Keaton Myers and Julian Elizalde also competed for the Mules.

“Our athletes have put in many hours and worked incredibly hard this year,” said Muleshoe Junior High coach Jalissa King. “It feels fantastic to bring home both District Championships as well as these individual accolades. We are celebrating all of their hard work. It truly is a great day to be Mules and Lady Mules!”
