Lady Mules vs. Highland Park (2-15-2016)

The Lady Mules fell six points short of moving on in the playoffs Monday night. The Lady Mules met the Amarillo Highland Park Lady Hornets in the West Texas A&M Fieldhouse in the Bi-District round of the Texas State Playoffs.

The Lady Mules stumbled out of the gate Monday night to trail by six points at the end of the first period. The Lady Mules trailed by as many as 20 points early in the final period and by as few as three points in the third period.

But those six first-period points turned out to be the difference in the game. The Lady Mules lost to Highland Park 50-44.

Conley Niblett finally broke the scoring ice for the Lady Mules with a free throw just three minutes and 25 seconds before the period ended. Yvonne Diaz took a pass at the elbow, turned and drove the lane for a lay up. The Lady Mules trailed 9-3 after one quarter.

Sadie Sudduth drove for a hoop thirty-six seconds into the second quarter. Emily Precure drove under the hoop for a reverse lay up and Sa. Sudduth dropped in a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Sydnie Sudduth was fouled shooting and made one free throw. Niblett sank a trey from the top of the key. The Lady Mules trailed 21-14 at the half.

Sy. Sudduth kicked of the third period with a free throw. Precure put back an offensive rebound and Niblett sank an 18 foot jump shoot and later went coast-to-coast for a lay up. The Lady Mules had fallen back to 34-21.

The Hornets stretched their lead to 20 points before the Lady Mules got cranked up in the final period.

Diaz drove the lane for a hoop and Niblett scored inside the paint. Sa. Sudduth found the range from behind the arc and sank he first of three treys in the quarter. She squared up and hit from the top of the key. Sy. Sudduth made a pair from the charity line and Sa. Sudduth hit her second 3-pointer from the wing.

Niblett battled her way through a foul to score and converted the free throw. She added two more charity tosses before the game ended. Sa. Sudduth sank her third trey and made a short jumper before time expired on the Lady Mules’ season.

Sa. Sudduth led the Lady Mules with four 3-pointers and 17 points. Niblett finished with one 3-pointer, four hoops and was four-of-five from the line for 15 points. Sy. Sudduth, Precure and Diaz added four points each.

The Lady Mules will now change their focus to the Spring sports.

The Mules traveled to Dimmitt Tuesday night to end the regular season. Beto Diaz sank a trey for the Mules just 10 seconds into the game but the Bobcats came back to take the lead at 20-15 by the end of the end of the first period.

The Mules came roaring back in the second quarter with Jesse Leal giving the Mules a 21-20 lead six minutes before the first half ended. The Mules never again relinquished the lead. The Mules clinched a tie for second place in the district with a 68-65 win.

Leal turned up the defensive heat on the Bobcats top 3-point shooter from game one of the Mules vs. Bobcats. Leal seemed to get in that Bobcat’s head and his game dropped off.

The Mules out rebounded the Bobcats on both ends of the floor but jerked down 19 offensive rebounds compared to four by Dimmitt. The Mules converted many of those rebounds to points.

Jason Florez stepped into a trey from the wing one minute after Diaz. Leal hit from the blocks and battled through a foul on a fast break. He converted the free throw for an old-fashion three-point play. Diaz scored from near the elbow and Dagen Dunham scored just before the buzzer sounded. The Mules trailed 20-15.

Tony Castillo made a pass to Dunham to start the second quarter with a short jumper. Dunham went on to added three more hoops before the half end for eight points in the period and 10 in the half.

Diaz made a reverse lay up and Leal put back an offensive rebound to give the Mules the lead. Castillo made one free throw as did Antonio Vasquez. Aaryn Ross sank two from the charity line. The Mules led 31-26 at the half.

The Mules did not score for just over four minutes in the third quarter. Danny Campos broke his scoring drought with a free throw. Dunham sank a 3-pointer and Florez chipped in a free throw. Castillo used an assist from Florez to score from near the baseline. The Mules were clinging to a 38-37 lead when the period ended.

Florez took over the game in the final quarter with 21 points and willed the Mules to win. He got the Mules started with a lay up and he was fouled. Florez converted the charity toss. Campos ripped down an offensive rebound on one side of the boards and someway stepped to the opposite side of the hoop and gently put the ball up on the glass in a in the hoop.

He later took an assist from Florez to score in the paint. Dunham made five-of-six free throws and Leal chipped in a free throw. Florez sank a pair of treys, three hoops and was six-for-six from the line.

Florez 21 point final quarter made him the Mule leader in points with 25 points. Dunham finished with 18 points. Leal would have been the defensive leader and he added eight points. Diaz dropped in seven points and Campos made five points. Castillo finished with three points, Ross made two points and Vasquez chipped in one point.

The Mules flipped a coin with Littlefield to break the tie and the Mules lost the flip. The Mules met the second place team from District 1-3A, the Spearman Lynx, Tuesday night at 8:00 PM.

The Muleshoe High School Powerlifting team participated in the largest meet in area Saturday. There were 314 participants in the meet. Erika Arzola led the Muleshoe team with a fourth place finish.

Arzola lifted a total weight of 585 pounds in the 148 pound weight class. She made a squat lift of 225 pounds, bench pressed 105 pounds and had a dead lift of 255 pounds.

Lourdes Escalante finished seventh in the 148 pound weight class with a squat of 215 pounds, bench pressed 95 pounds and made a dead lift of 235 pounds for a total of 545 pounds. Glenda Escalante took ninth in the 132 pound class with a total weight of 495 pounds.

Noa Rojas placed eighth in the 181 pound weight class with a squat lift of 265 pounds, bench pressed 110 pounds and made a dead lift of 255 pounds for a total weight of 630 pounds.

Evan Paez placed ninth in the 132 pound weight class with a total weight of 875 pounds. He had a squat lift of 335 pounds, bench pressed 170 pounds and had a squat lift of 370 pounds.

Mikey Lozano finished sixth in the 148 pound class with a squat lift of 350 pounds and bench pressed 160 pounds. He made a dead lift of 350 pounds for a total of 860 pounds. Justin Carrion placed fifteenth in the 148 pound class with a total weight of 725 pounds. He made a squat lift of 260 pounds, bench pressed 145 and made a dead lift of 320 pounds.

Cesar Olvera took sixth in the 198 pound weight class. He had a squat lift of 385 pounds, bench pressed 225 and made a dead lift of 450 pounds for a total of 1060 pounds.

Eric Vela placed eighth in the 242 pound class with a total weight of 1180 pounds. He squat lifted 445 pounds, bench pressed 300 pounds and made a dead lift of 445 pounds.

The Mules next scheduled meet is February 27 in Friona.

Mules vs. Tulia & Shallowater (2-9 & 12-2016)

The Mules utilized two big quarters to defeat the Tulia Hornets Tuesday night 63-34. The Mules stormed the floor for a 19-7 opening period and did the same in the third quarter for a 22-7 period.

The Mules struggled Friday night to find the hoop. It did not seem to matter where they took the shot it would only bounce around before falling away from the hoop. But the Mules utilized tenacious defense against the Shallowater Mustangs to stay in the game.

The Mules made a valiant come-back attempt in the final quarter with 21 points but fell just short 50-47.

Dagen Dunham took over the game in the opening quarter against Tulia. He took a pass from Beto Diaz for the Mules opening hoop just over one minute into the game. He put back a rebound and then scored on a feed from Jason Florez. Dunham converted two free throws and dropped in a 3-pointer before the quarter ended for a total of 11 points.

Florez sank a trey from the wing and Diaz scored from the baseline. Danny Campos put back a rebound and converted a free throw. The Mules led 19-7 after one quarter.

Campos took a pass from across the lane from Dunham to score in the paint. Dunham sank a trey from the wing. Aaryn Ross finished a fast break and was fouled. He converted the free throw for a three-point play. Antonio Vasquez chipped in a free throw. The Mules had extended their lead to 28-13.

Jesse Leal finished a fast break to start the second half. Diaz finished two fast breaks early in the period. Tony Castillo scored on an assist from Dunham and was fouled. He converted the free throw and later sank a baseline jumper.

Ross took a pass from Florez and scored from six feet. Vasquez drove the paint for a hoop and Dunham scored from both inside and outside the arc. The Mules were on top 50-20 with one quarter left to play.

The Mules cruised in the final quarter with Campos scoring in paint twice and made a pair of free throws. Vasquez scored from 10 feet and Florez made a lay up. Diaz chipped in a free throw and Gabriel Reza was fouled shooting. He made one free throw to end the game.

Dunham paced the Mules with 19 points. Campos finished with 11 points and Diaz dropped in seven points. Castillo, Florez, Vasquez and Ross added five points each. Leal made two points and Reza chipped in one point. 

Leal finished a fast break to get the Mules started one minute into the game against Shallowater. Florez hit a 15-foot jumper from the wing and Leal added a second basket. Leal was plagued by fouls in the opening period. Beto Diaz made a steal and drove to the hoop. He was fouled and made both free throws to tie the game at 8-8 at the end of the first period.

Diaz sank a trey from the top of the key for the Mules only 3-pointer of the first three quarters. Florez converted a pair of charity tosses. Campos made one free throw and scored twice in the paint for five points in the second period. Shallowater had put 15 on the board to lead the Mules 23-18 at the half.

Campos was fouled in the paint and made one free throw to start the second half. He later made an gymnastic move to score a second hoop. Donovan Gutierrez stepped into an opening to score on an in bound play. Florez dropped in a short jumper and Diaz added a free throw. The Mules had dropped behind 36-26 with just eight minutes left to play.

In the final period it appeared the Mules might pull off the impossible and make up the difference in the game.

Dunham hit a baseline jumper to open the final quarter. Diaz made a free throw and Castillo scored twice. Florez made a free throw and Campos stuck back a pair of offensive rebounds for points.

Dunham dropped in a free throw and put back a rebound. He sank a trey with 90 seconds left and Florez sank a second 3-pointer with 40 seconds left to cut the Shallowater lead to three points. The Mules could not get a final shot to fall to tie the game.

Campos led the Mules with eight points and Florez finished with 10 points. Dunham dropped in eight points and Diaz had seven points. Leal and Castillo added four points each and Gutierrez chipped in two points.

The Mules will traveled to Dimmitt Tuesday night to close out the season and determine the final district placing. The Mules have clinched a spot in the state playoffs.

The Lady Mules appeared to be a team preparing for the post season Tuesday night when the Tulia Hornets came to town. The Lady Mules pounced on the Hornets 20-8 in the first period and that carried over to a 17-11 second quarter for a 37-19 lead at the intermission.

Despite the large lead the Lady Mules did not relax or lose their focus and continued to pour it on the Hornets for a 71-35 win.

Reagan Reynolds put back an offensive rebound for the Lady Mules first points of the game. Conley Niblett drove the lane and had to battle her way through a foul for a lay up. Niblett converted the free throw for an old-fashion three-point play.

Sadie Sudduth finished a fast break before draining back-to-back 3-pointers. Yvonne Diaz was fouled shooting in the lane and made both free throws. Brittney Mendoza found the range from behind the arc for a trey just before the first period ended. The Lady Mules led 20-8.

Sa. Sudduth opened the second period with a 3-pointer from the wing. Sydnie Sudduth struck from behind the arc and then added a pair of free throws. Emily Precure was fouled while shooting and made both shots from the charity line.

Niblett made five-of-six free throws in the second period and Jasmine Garza made one from the line. Sasha Esparza sank one free throw before the half ended with the Lady Mules leading 37-19.

Precure opened the second half with a 3-pointer from the wing. Diaz scored in the paint and was fouled. She converted the free throw. Niblett worked her way down the paint to score. She later converted a free throw.

Hallie Myatt scored from 12 feet. Sa. Sudduth drove for a hoop and later finished a fast break. The Lady Mules led 52-27 with one period left to play.

Sy. Sudduth sank a trey from the top of the key to start the final period. Precure made a pair of free throws and sank a trey on an inside-out pass from Niblett. She finished a fast break for her final hoop.

Desi Gutierrez made a pair of free throws. Niblett scored a pair of hoops on assists from Precure and Reynolds. Garza nailed a 3-pointer to close out the game for the Lady Mules.

Sa. Sudduth and Niblett paced the Lady Mules with 15 points each. Sa. Sudduth made three treys and Niblett was seven-of-nine from the free throw line. Precure finished with 12 points and Sy. Sudduth made two treys and eight points.

Diaz added five points, Reynolds and Garza dropped in four points each. Mendoza had a trey for three points. Gutierrez and Myatt added two points each and Esparza chipped in one point.

The Lady Mules opened the post season in West Texas A&M’s Field House Monday evening against the District I Class 3-A Champion Amarillo Highland Park Lady Hornets.
