Lady Mules vs. Lubbock Roosevelt (12-16-2014)

The Lady Mules traveled to Acuff Tuesday to play the Lubbock Roosevelt Lady Eagles prior to starting the Christmas Holidays. The Lady Mules were short handed due to some nagging injuries.

The Eagles took advantage of the Lady Mules and scurried to a 57-39 win to even the Lady Mules’ record at 6-6.

“We still struggle with converting our opportunities,” said Lady Mule coach Carey Sudduth. “Injuries have not helped but the kids are working hard and we are learning every time out on the floor.”

The Eagles used the press in the first period to tax the Lady Mule confidence in getting the ball down the floor. Normally the press does not bother the Lady Mules but missing some key players made the task difficult.

Roosevelt scored the first two hoops of the game before Sydnie Sudduth hit from the elbow. The Eagles made a free throw and Sudduth answered with two of her own. Conley Niblett blocked an Eagle shot but Roosevelt held on to the ball and scored.

Yvonne Diaz fought through a foul to put back an offensive rebound. She completed the three-point play by adding the free throw and tied the game at 7-7 with three minutes left in the first period.

The Eagles finished the quarter with a 10-4 scoring run. Dani Diaz interrupted the run with a pair from the charity line and Sudduth stuck back a rebound. Roosevelt led 17-11 going into the second period.

The Eagles made two free throws to start the second quarter before Niblett finished a fast break with a basket. Roosevelt went on a 14-5 scoring run to end the half. Sasha Esparza pushed the ball ahead to Shanice Rosas in the lane. She battled her way through a foul and scored. Rosas added the free throw.

Esparza finished the half with a 10-foot jumper. The Lady Mules trailed 33-18 at the half.

Reagan Reynolds was fouled attempting to put back an offensive rebound and made two from the charity line. Niblett was fouled driving the paint and made both of her free throws.

Sudduth finished a three-point play to interrupt a six-point scoring run by the Eagles. Niblett raced out from the blocks and blocked a 3-point shot by an Eagle. Rosas put back an offensive rebound before Niblett made one from the line.

The Eagles led 45-28 going into the final period.

The Eagles made a pair of baskets before Diaz made two from the charity stripe. The Lady Mules were down 53-31 before D. Diaz nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing. Angie Perez made a trey from the left wing.

Sydnie Sudduth led the Lady Mules with 10 points. Shanice Rosas and Dani Diaz finished with seven points apiece. Conley Niblett dropped in five points, Yvonne Diaz and Angie Perez added three points each. Sasha Esparza chipped in two points.

The Lady Mules start working off the extra turkey from the Christmas break in the Texico Wolverine Tournament December 29-31 and will return home to host the Bovina Fillies January 6. The Lady Mules will open district on the road in Shallowater against a second set of Fillies January 9.

JV Lady Mules vs. Lubbock Roosevelt (12-16-2014)

The JV Lady Mules utilized tough defense to rattle the Lubbock Roosevelt Lady Eagles Tuesday night in Acuff. The Lady Mules jumped out to a 13-2 first period advantage and sailed to a 36-20 defeat of the Eagles.

“Our defense was to much for them to regain their composure in the first quarter,” said Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “We only had four ladies scoring but everybody contributed on defense to help win the game.”

“This is a very unselfish team and they pass to the person that needs the ball. Brittney Mendoza and Desi Gutierrez were hot from the perimeter. Marissa Reyes and Jasmine Garza scored in the lane. It was a true team effort and a great way to go into the Christmas Holidays.”

The Lady Mules are now 10-4 on the season.

Both teams scored eight points in the second period and the Lady Mules led 21-10 at the half. The Lady Mules continued to out score the Eagles 6-4 in the third period and 9-6 in the final frame.
