JV Mules vs. Chilldress (10-23-2014)

The Childress Bobcats leaped in front of the JV Mules Thursday. The Bobcats had scored two touchdowns and an extra point to lead the Mules 13-0 by the 8:24 mark of the second period.

The Mules came roaring back after that to score 28 unanswered points. The Mules defeated the Bobcats 28-13 to improve to 3-0 in district.

Bryce Mauricio kicked off for the Mules and Childress recovered the short kick at mid field. The Bobcats drove to the Mule 18 before Aaryn Ross picked off a Bobcat pass at the Mule one-yard line. Ross returned to the Mule 34.

The two teams exchanged punts through the balance of the first quarter as neither team could sustain a drive. But the Bobcats returned the Mules’ final punt of the first period to the Mule 24. Two plays into the second period Childress scored on a nine-yard run. The Bobcats led 6-0 with 9:47 remaining in the first half.

Brandon Chavez returned the ensuing kickoff to the Mule 45. Jesse Easiley broke up the middle for 12 yards. Ross kept wide right for 39 yards to the Childress 18. Easily pounded up the middle to the Bobcat five-yard line. A high snap over Ross’s head gave the Bobcats the ball on the Childress 21.

A Bobcat pass to the sideline resulted in a 79-yard Childress touchdown. The point-after kick was good and the Bobcats on led 13-0 with 8:24 left in the half.

Easily returned the Bobcat kick to the Mule 27. Ross located Matt Flores open on a slant route for seven yards. Evan Paez went up the middle for six yards and Ross ran the quarterback sweep for 12 yards to near mid field.

Paez was tackled by his facemask after an 11-yard gain. The run plus the penalty moved the Mules to the Childress 21. Paez took the option pitch five yards. Ross passed to Flores running a slant over the middle for 10 yards.

Ross scored on a six-yard quarterback sweep. Ross tossed to Paez for the two-point conversion and the Mules trailed 13-8 with just under four minutes left in the half. 

It was three-and-out for the Bobcats after the Mule kickoff. Chavez and Donovan Gutierrez plugged up the middle on second down. The Bobcats fumbled on third down but recovered at the Childress 40. The Childress punt rolled dead on the Mule 30.

Ross raced wide left for 36 yards to the Bobcat 34. Ross tossed to Flores. He caught the wide-receiver screen pass and raced 30-yards to the Childress one-yard line. Ross sneaked in to put the Mules ahead 14-13 with 41 seconds remaining in the half.

The Bobcats’ second half kickoff went out of bounds at the Mule 44. After the five-yard penalty the Mules started their first scoring-drive of the second half at the Mule 49.

A pass-interference penalty moved the Mules to the Childress 36. Paez pounded the ball up the middle for 11 yards. Ross then took the deep snap and started wide right. He cut back behind his blockers and was not hit until he reached the five-yard line.

Ross broke that tackle and scored on the 20-yard run to put the Mules on top 20-13 with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter.

The Bobcats ate up most of the fourth period on an drive that ended on the Mule10-yard line. Dominik Hasley made the stop a yard short of a first on fourth down.

A facemask penalty advanced the Mules to their 25. Paez raced through a gaping hole in the middle of the Bobcat defense and went 75 yards for the Mules’ final touchdown. Ross passed to Chavez open in the end zone for the two-point conversion and the final points of the game.

The Mules rushed for 286 yards and passed for 59 for a total of 345 yards. Evan Paez led the Mule offense with 11 carries for 125 yards. Aaryn Ross ran nine times for 118 yards and Jesse Easiley carried five times for 43 yards.

Aaryn Ross made touchdown runs of one, 20 and five yards. Evan Paez had a 75-yard TD run. Matt Flores caught three passes for 27 yards, Bryce Mauricio made one reception for 30 yards and Boo Flores made one catch for two yards.

Donavan Gutierrez led the Mule defense with 14 tackles. Boo Flores had seven stops, Matt Flores made 10 tackles and Rodrigo Rivas had six stops. Dylan Miller also made six tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and two big hits. Aaryn Ross had an interception in the end zone.

The 3-0 Mules will travel to Dimmitt to battle more Bobcats Thursday night.
