9th Lady Mules vs. Shallowater (12-15-2014)

The freshmen Lady Mules found it tough going Monday night when they hosted the Fillies of Shallowater. The Lady Mules kept the game close for three periods but the Fillies used a big finish to defeat the Lady Mules 40-22.

The Lady Mules scrambled out of the gate early with Brianne Barron scoring for the Lady Mules with a free throw after she was fouled attempting to finish a fast break. The Fillies took a brief lead with a pair of free throws.

Cassidy Cage drove and put the ball high on the glass for a bucket to give the Lady Mules a 3-2 edge. On the next trip down the floor, Cage passed to across the lane to Brianne Velasquez for a back-door hoop. Lily Barrera put back an offensive rebound before Barron drove the floor and was fouled shooting. She made one free to end the Lady Mule seven point run for an 8-2 lead.

Shallowater finished the first period with a six-point run to tie the game 8-8.

The Fillies continued their scoring run into the second period with a pair of hoops. Barron drove and dished to Velasquez on the blocks for a point-blank hoop. Barrera hit from the free-throw line to tie the game at 12-12 with three minutes remaining in the half.

The Fillies finished the period with a 7-2 scoring run to lead the Lady Mules 19-14 at the half.

Barron saved the ball to Val Ambriz. Ambriz battled her way through a foul and scored. She completed the old-fashion three-point play by making the free throw. That was the only points of the third period for the Lady Mules. Shallowater had built a 24-17 advantage over the Lady Mules after three periods.

The final frame went to the Fillies with 16 points. Ricarda Elizalde scored the Lady Mules only hoop. Barron, Barrera and Elizalde each chipped in a free throw for five points for the Lady Mules.

Barron led the Lady Mules in scoring with seven points and Velasquez added four points. Barron, Ambriz and Elizalde dropped in three points each and Cage chipped in two points.

The Lady Mules took the Christmas break and will be back in action in January 5 at Dimmitt when they face the Bobbies. The Lady Mules return home January 12 to host the Littlefield Wildcats. The Lady Mules will play in the Dimmitt Tournament January 15 and 17.
