Lady Mules vs. Abernathy (11-24-2014)

The Lady Mules were able to hang close with the Abernathy Lady Lopes Monday night through most of three quarters. Conley Niblett made both free throws as the third period ticked away to close the Lady Mule gap to 29-31.

The Lopes unleashed a 9-2 scoring barrage in the final minute and a half to take a 39-31 advantage into the final frame. The rolling barrage continued into the final frame with the Lady Lopes defeating the Lady Mules 66-45.

Shanice Rosas matched an Abernathy basket by scoring in the paint as the game started. Yvonne Diaz was fouled shooting from the blocks and made one free throw to halt a five-point run by the Lopes.

Sydnie Sudduth nailed a 3-pointer from the wing with three minutes remaining in the first period to cut the Lopes lead to 7-6. Dani Diaz made a pair from the charity line to knot the game at 8-8. The Lopes made a trey but Y. Diaz answered by driving the lane to end the first period with the Lady Mules trailing 11-10.

Rosas took a charge to start the second frame and then scored from the blocks when the Lady Mules went on offense. Her basket gave the Lady Mules a brief 12-11 lead with six minutes left in the second period. The Lopes came firing back to lead 25-18 at the half.

Rosas posted up in the paint on a break to get the Lady Mules started in the third period. Niblett did the same on the next trip for the Lady Mules down the floor after a defensive stop. D. Diaz answered a pair of Lope’ free throws with a driving lay up to finish a fast break.

The two teams continued to trade baskets until the third period ended with the Lopes adding a point to their lead. The Lady Mules trailed 39-31 to open the final eight minutes of the game.

The Lady Mules had a good final period scoring 14 points. But that did not match the Lopes’ 27-point flurry.

Sy. Sudduth led the Lady Mules in scoring with nine points. Dani Diaz finished with eight points and Conley Niblett and Sadie Sudduth dropped in seven points each. Shanice Rosas had six points. Yvonne Diaz and Reagan Reynolds added three points apiece and Sasha Esparza chipped in two points.

December 9 the Lady Mules will play the Floydada Whirlwinds and return to Abernathy December 11-13 for the Antelope Tournament.
