JV Mules vs. Seagraves (9-10-2015)

The JV Mules 41-20 win over the Seagraves Eagles proved to be a much more exciting game than the final score indicated. The score was tied at 20-20 with just over one and half minutes remaining in the game. The Mules scored three touchdowns in the final 96 seconds.

The Mules drove 75 yards to score and take a 26-20 lead with 1:36 left on the clock. The Mule defense took over after that. Tim Perez returned an Eagle fumble 36 yards for a touchdown and JoJo Rejino ended all scoring with TD on a two-yard fumble recovery.

The Mules had a total of 295 yards of offense with 44 coming on the ground. Joe Waggoner rushed five times for 17 yards, Issac Mendoza carried twice for 13 and Tim Perez ran four times for 10 yards.  

Brenden Mehl completed 18 of 22 passing attempts for 295 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and rushed once for four yards.

I. Mendoza made 10 receptions for 170 yards and three touchdowns. Sergio Solano caught two passes for 28 yards and Michael Lozano had two catches for 22 yards and a TD. Perez made two receptions for 17 yards and Jacob Kettner caught two passes for eight yards.

Waggoner led the Mules on defense with 10 tackles. Perez finished with eight tackles, one interception for a TD, broke up a pass and a sack. Miguel Lucas had six tackles, Fidel Mendoza also made six tackles and Zack Atwood finished with five stops.

Josh Torres recorded five tackles. I. Mendoza made four stops and caused a fumble. Rejino made two tackles and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

The Mules will make the long trip to Perryton to play the Rangers Thursday afternoon.

The Freshman Mules traveled to Idalou Thursday to match wits with the Wildcats. The Mules fell behind early but the defense kicked in and shut down a second scoring threat by the Wildcats.

After that it was almost all Mules for the rest of the game. Jorge Albarran scored first for the Mules on a four-yard run. The point after failed. Brady Martinez scored on a 31-yard pass and run from Luke Del Toro. Ryan Rodriguez got the call to rush the three yards needed for the two-point conversion.

Rodriguez added his own TD with a one-yard blast but was not finished as he later galloped 50 yards for the Mules’ final touchdown. Izaiah Hurtado punched in the final two-point conversion for a 28-16 Mule win.

Rodriguez was the leading Mule rusher with seven carries for 78 yards and two TDs. Yoel Reyes got the call three time for 35 yards and Hurtado ran three times for 34 yards.

Del Toro was 10 of 15 passing for 133 yards, one TD and no interceptions. Martinez had two catches for 59 yards and a score. Hurtado caught three passes for 35 yards and Rodriguez snagged three passes for 35 yards.

The leading tacklers on defense were Martinez and Keaton Myers. Myers forced two fumbles, Martinez forced a fumble and Mathew DeLeon intercepted a pass.

The Mules next outing will be in Perryton against the Rangers. The game has a 4:00 PM start time.

The eighth grade Mules hosted the Seagraves Eagles Thursday in their home opener. The Mules were determined to even the score with the Eagles after losing the first meeting between the two teams.

The Mules dominated the Eagles with a convincing winning score of 46-0.

Damian Juarez got the Mules started with a six-yard touchdown run. In the second period Jose Cardenas forced a fumble that Cristian Bustillos scooped up and returned 76 yards for a touchdown. Juarez added the two-point conversion.

The Mules kicked off to the one-yard line and the Wolverines waited for the ball to roll in the end zone before covering it at the one. Two plays later Cardenas forced a second fumble that Jimmy Villa recovered.

The Mules failed to convert from the Wolverine eight and turned the ball over on downs. The Mule defense held and forced a Wolverine punt. Nathan Rodriguez blocked the punt that Hector Arras recovered.

Arras scored both the ensuing touchdown and two-point conversion.

The Mules led 22-0 at the intermission.

Juarez scored the Mules’ first TD of the second half with a scamper of 68 yards. Juarez later scored near the end of the third quarter. Kelan Florez kept for the two-point conversion.

Arras scored the Mules final touchdown early in the fourth period and tacked on the two-point conversion.

The Mules will host the Shallowater Mustangs Thursday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for approximately 6:15 PM.

The seventh grade Mules kicked off their season Thursday after noon by defending their home turf against the Wolverines of Springlake-Earth. The Mules defeated the Wolverines with an impressive 30-8 final score.

The Wolverines returned the opening kick of the second half for a touchdown and added the two-point conversion.

Joe Gutierrez ran roughshod over the Wolverines with three touchdowns. Joey Martinez added a fourth tally. Martinez added a pair of two-point conversions and Gutierrez chipped in a third.

Gutierrez forced a fumble on defense and Kurt Rodriguez. Later in the game the two Mules reversed roles with Rodriguez forcing a fumble and Gutierrez claiming it for the Mules.

The Mules will host the Shallowater Mustangs Thursday afternoon with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 PM.

Mules vs. Sweetwater (9-4-2015)

The Mules were able to move the ball almost at will against the Sweetwater Mustangs Friday night but struggled crossing the goal line. The Mules opening drive went inside the 10 of the Mustangs but an interception turned the ball over at the Sweetwater five-yard line.

Three plays later the Mustangs were in the Mule end zone. The final play of the drive was an 89-yard pass and run. The two-point conversion was good and the Mustangs led 8-0.

The Mustangs went on to score four more touchdowns to defeat the Mules 36-14.

“We had 500 yards of offense Friday night against a highly rated class 4-A team,” said Mule head coach David Wood. “That is always good news. The bad news was we had a tough time scoring.”

“Sweetwater was able to score from any place on the field and that certainly got in our heads. I admit that I quit punting because of it. I felt we needed to try to use all four downs to keep our drives going and keep the ball away from them.”

“We learned from this game that we need to just keep playing our game and not get down on our selves. We will be better because of this game.”

The Mustangs had two more drives in the opening period. A four-play 54-yard drive gave Sweetwater a 14-0 advantage with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter. The Mustangs’ final drive of the first period was capped with a 52-yard run. The drive took four plays for 71 yards and the Mustangs led 22-0 with ten seconds left in the opening quarter.

Sweetwater opened the second period with four-play 57-yard drive that ended with a six yard run. The Mustangs led 30-0 with 9:56 left in the half. That was the final score of the first half.

The Mules opened the second half with a 13-play scoring drive that covered 67 yards. Danny Campos completed a nine-yard pass to Jason Florez for the Mules first touchdown. Felipe Guerrero booted the point after and the Mules trailed 30-7 with 26 seconds left in the third period.

Sweetwater scored on a nine-yard pass with 8:11 left in the game to complete an 11-play 74-yard drive. The two-point conversion failed and the Mules trailed 36-7.

It only took the Mules one play to score the final TD of the game. Campos again connected with Florez for a 50-yard pass and run. Guerrero’s kick was good to end all scoring.

Campos completed 32 of 55 passing attempts for 346 yards, two TDs and had two passes intercepted. Florez led the Mules with 11 receptions for 126 yards and two TDs, Tony Castillo made eight catches for 103 yards and Mario Flores had four receptions for 40 yards. Five other Mules had one or more receptions for a total of 83 yards.

Evan Paez led the Mules in rushing with 13 carries for 75 yards, Josh Lopez rushed nine times for 38 yards and Jose Mendoza carried three times for 26 yards. Campos had four yards rushing and Florez ran once for 11 yards.

Javy Perez led the Mule defense with 11 tackles, Tony Vasquez made nine stops and broke up three pass and Mendoza had nine tackles with three being for losses. Donovan Gutierrez also made nine tackles with two being for losses and mad two quarterback hurries.

Paez made seven tackles with two being on special teams and one for a loss. Dagen Dunham finished with six tackles with one being for a loss, one being a sack and blocked two passes.

The Mules will host the Seagraves Eagles Friday night in the Mules’ home opener. Game time is 7:30 in Benny Douglas Stadium.
