The seventh and eighth grade Mules struggled Monday evening when they hosted the Shallowater Mustangs. The seventh grade fell victim to the Mustangs 44-6 and the eighth grade Mules faired some better but lost 50-36.

The seventh grade Mules failed to score in the first half and trailed 25-0 at the intermission with the Mustangs continuing to run a full court press. Things changed little in the third period but the Mustangs finally fell back on defense and the Mules scored two hoops.

Jacob Toscano and Kurt Rodriguez scored a hoop each and Joey Martinez and Mario Guardado chipped in a free throw each.

The eighth grade Mules hung close in the opening period and trailed 13-9 but failed to score in the second frame and fell behind 25-9 by the intermission.

Damian Juarez led the Mules with nine points and Jacob Barron finished with four points. Nathan Rodriguez added three points. Kelan Florez, Matthew Alarcon, Jimmy Villa, Jose Cardenas and Eddie Vasquez chipped in two points each.

The Mules are currently on Christmas break but will return to action January 4 in Dimmitt against the Bobcats. The Mules will play in the Levelland Tournament January 7-9 and return home January 11 to ho

The seventh grade Lady Mule A and B teams traveled to Shallowater Monday night to start the second round of district play. The Lady Mule A team battled Shallowater to a dead heat in the first period.

But the Mustangs exploded in the second period to take control and the Lady Mules could never get back in the contest. Shallowater won the game 41-17. The first period ended in a 7-7 tie.

Shallowater out scored the Lady Mules 16-1 in the second period to lead 23-8. The Lady Mules fought back in the third period to cut the Mustang lead by three points. But the Mustangs came back strong in the final period.

“Playing good teams always make us better,” said Lady Mule coach Jalissa King. “It allows us to see where we need to work. We improved by 11 points from the first game with Shallowater. We had two major players in foul trouble much of the game.”

“Our defense looked better today even though we lost. We really did play much better than in our first meeting.”

Anahi Barrera led the Lady Mules with 11 points.

The Lady Mule B team also lost to Shallowater Monday 18-9. The Mustangs led 13-6 at the half and only score three points in the final period.

Melissa Madero led the Lady Mules with four points and Aliyah Regalado added three points.

“The first time with played Shallowater we lost by 31 points,” continued Coach King. “Tonight we only lost by nine. The numbers never lie and this shows how much improvement these ladies have made. It feels great to see how much we have grown in a short time.”

The Lady Mules are on Christmas break but will return to action January 4 when they play host to the Dimmitt Bobbies.

The Muleshoe Mules dropped the Floydada Whirlwinds like a hot potato Tuesday night in the Mules home opener. The Mules defeated Floydada 51-37 and then battled their way through the Abernathy Shootout to play Saturday in the Championship game.

The Mules brought home the Shootout’s Championship trophy by defeating the Wall Hawks 48-31.

Tony Vasquez passed to Danny Campos waiting on the blocks for the Mules first hoop of the game against Floydada. The Whirlwinds tied the game before Dagan Dunham stole a pass and drove the floor for a lay up.

Vasquez dropped in a 3-pointer from the corner and Campos followed that with a put back for a 9-4 Mule lead with five minutes left in the first period. Dunham also stuck back an offensive rebound as the Mules began to separate themselves from the Whirlwinds.

Floydada scored but thirty seconds later Vasquez scored in the paint. Dunham sandwiched a Floydada hoop between a pair of drives down the lane for a 17-8 Mule lead with a minute left in the first quarter.

Campos tipped in an offensive rebound. The Whirlwinds scored but Vasquez got the points back with a pair of free throws. The Winds ended the period with one free throw. The Mules led 21-11 after one quarter.

Dunham drained a trey from the corner to start the second period. Vasquez passed to Dunham for a basket in the lane. Floydada scored but Dunham stuck back an offensive rebound for a 29-13 Mule lead.

Donavan Gutierrez passed to Dunham in the paint for a hoop for a 31-13 Mule lead with three and half minutes left in the first half. Dunham picked off a Wind pass and drove the floor for a hoop.

Campos scored from the blocks and had to fight through a foul. He completed the three-point play by making the free throw. Floydada scored with time running down but Kevin Mendoza answered with a drive down the lane before time expired.

The Mules led 37-15 at the intermission.

The Mules backed off to much in the third period and the Whirlwinds out scored the Mules 12-4 in the third period to cut the Mule lead to 41-27 with one period left to play. The two teams played to a dead heat in the final period for the Mules to claim the win.

Dunham paced the Mules with 24 points and Campos finished with 17 points. Vasquez made all six of his points in the first period. Javy Perez and Mendoza chipped in two points each.

Dunham made three 3-pointers in the third quarter to help the Mules separate themselves from the Wall Hawks in the Championship game of the Abernathy Shootout Saturday. At the end of Dunham’s barrage from outside the arc the Mules led 36-24.

“We try to play fast on offense,” said Mule coach Clay White. “We try to transition to our offense quickly and get a good shot, now. We try to not give up an easy shot on defense and like to play an aggressive man-to-man defense. We try to stay sound.”

“We are still getting in shape after our football season went to the end of November. The kids are coming along and we are missing some people because of football injuries. We hope to have some of them back soon but we have some depth that is getting some good experience.”

The Mules fell behind the Hawks 10-7 in the first period but the Mules had tied the game at 18-18 by the intermission. Dunham’s three treys in the third period made a big difference as the out scored the Hawks 19-9. The Mules added to there lead with an 11-4 run in the final period.

Dunham led the Mules with 20 points and Jesse Leal finished with nine points. Campos and Gutierrez dropped in seven points each. Mendoza added three points and Vasquez chipped in two points.

The Mules hosted the Lubbock Roosevelt Eagles December 15 before taking the Christmas break. The Mules are back in action December 29-31 in the 57th Fibermax Caprock Holiday Tournament in Lubbock.

The Mules will host the Slaton Tigers January 5 before opening district play in Muleshoe January 8 against the Shallowater Mustangs.

The Lady Mules ran roughshod over the Floydada Lady Winds Tuesday night with a 50-25 win. The Lady Mules used the game as a springboard to take second place in the Abernathy Antelope Shootout.

A stingy defense by the Lady Mules completely shut down the Winds in the first period. Conley Niblett dominated in the paint with six points in the opening period and Reagan Reynolds scored four fast break points.

Brittney Mendoza sank a trey from the wing. Sadie Sudduth drained a trey from the corner on an in bound play and finished a fast break for five first period points. Sydnie Sudduth made a pair of free throws and the Lady Mules led 20-0 after the first eight minutes.

The Lady Mules lost some intensity in the second period with Sy. Sudduth making all three points. The Winds made up a little ground with nine points. The Lady Mules led 23-9 at the half.

The Lady Mules finished the game with a solid performance scoring 13 points in the third period and 14 in the final quarter.

Niblett started the second half with a free throw. Sa. Sudduth nailed a trey from the top of the key. Sy. Sudduth made a steal and passed to sister Sa. Sudduth on running on the break. Sa. Sudduth finished the break and was fouled making the hoop. She converted the three-point play by making the free throw.

Floydada made a free throw and a hoop. Sa. Sudduth finished a fast break to give the Lady Mules a 32-12 lead with five minutes left in the third period. Yvonne Diaz scored in the paint and Desi Gutierrez hit from just inside the arc at the top of the key.

Floydada finished the third period with a pair of hoops in the third period. The Lady Mules led 36-16 when the final period started.

Sa. Sudduth sank a trey from the top of the key after Floydada had made a hoop. Sa. Sudduth fired a half-court pass to Reynolds for a fast break hoop. Niblett made a free throw after being fouled attempting to put back an offensive rebound.

Sa. Sudduth passed to Reynolds in the paint for a basket. Floydada made a trey. Sa. Sudduth made a 15-foot baseline shot to double up on the Winds 46-23. Floydada’s final basket came with two minutes left in the game.

Sy. Sudduth drove the lane for a hoop and Gutierrez put back a rebound that ended the game.

Sa. Sudduth set the scoring pace with 16 points and Sy. Sudduth pumped in nine points. Reynolds and Niblett finished with eight points each. Gutierrez dropped in four points and Mendoza chipped in three points.

The Lady Mules battled their way through the Abernathy Antelope Tournament to play in the championship game Saturday against the Nazareth Swiftettes.

Nazareth proved to be to much for the Lady Mules Saturday evening with a final score of 49-24. The Swiftettes jumped out to a 13-7 lead at the end of the first period and 24-16 at the half. Nazareth out distanced the Lady Mules 25-8 in the second half.

“We played four really tough games in this tournament and got two a couple of good wins out of it,” said Lady Mule coach Carey Sudduth. “We are trying to build a team and I think we grew up this weekend.”

Diaz and Sy. Sudduth led the Lady Mules with seven points each. Niblett finished with five points, Sa. Sudduth made three points and Emily Precure chipped in two points.

The Lady Mules hosted the Lubbock Roosevelt Eagles Tuesday night before taking their Christmas break. The Lady Mules return to action in the 57th Fibermax Caprock Holiday Tournament December 29-31. January 5 the Lady Mules will host the Levelland Loboettes before starting district play, January 8, at home against the Shallowater Lady Mustangs.

9th Mules vs. Tulia (12-7-2015)

The freshmen Mules hit the court running Monday evening when they hosted the Tulia Hornets. The Mules were not kind hosts and held the Hornets scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the game. The Mules led 22-0 with six minutes left in the second period.

The Mules led 18-0 at the end of the first period and scooted to a 55-15 win.

Izaiah Hurtado got the Mules rolling with a trey from the wing. Ean Hasley drove the lane for a hoop and on the next trip down the floor was fouled shooting. He made both free throws to put the Mules ahead 7-0 with six minutes left in the first period.

Ethan Villa banked in a 3-point shot from the wing. A minute later he scored two points on an in-bound play. Adrian Bustillos scored from 15 feet and Josh Torres turned on the blocks for a basket. Julian Astorga scored in the paint to end the first period with the Mules leading 18-0.

The Mules kept up their fast pace with Raul Sierra driving the lane for a lay up to start the second period. Luis Franco fed Sierra breaking down the lane for a lay up. The Hornets finally scored with six minutes left in the second period.

Astorga put back an offensive rebound and Franco finished a fast break with a lay up. Corbin Hardwick found Franco with a pass for a fast-break lay up. The Hornets made their second basket with four minutes left in the first half. The Mules led 28-4.

Hurtado dished to Luke Leal running on a break for a basket. Torres finished the half with a fast break hoop. The Mules led 32-5 at the intermission.

The Mules out scored Tulia 10-8 in the third period and 13-7 in the final quarter for the win.

Torres paced the Mules with 11 points and Sierra was close behind with 10 points. Villa finished with eight points and Leal made seven points. Franco, Hasley and Astorga added four points each. Hurtado scored three points, Brady Martinez and Bustillos chipped in two points each.
