The Mules had little trouble with the Lubbock Roosevelt Eagles Tuesday evening. Danny Campos scored 11 first quarter points to jump start the Mules to a 72-33 win.

Donavan Gutierrez broke the scoring ice for the Mules with a put back. Jesse Leal made a steal and drove the floor for a hoop. Campos first points came on a put back and he was fouled. He converted the three-point play.

Tony Vasquez drove the lane for a hoop and then ripped off an Eagle and drove for another hoop that ended the Mules 13-0 scoring run. The Eagles first hoop came with about five and half minutes left in the first period.

Campos put back his own shot and 15 seconds later scored again for a 19-2 Mule lead. The Eagles scored back-to-back baskets before Kevin Mendoza drained a trey from the wing. Aaryn Ross answered a Roosevelt hoop with a trey from the corner to end the first period.

The Mules out scored the Eagles 16-3 in the second period for a 41-11 lead at the intermission. Dagen Dunham had sank back-to-back 3-pointers in the period.

The Mules increased their lead to 58-17 in the third period.

Campos led the Mules with 22 points and Dunham scored 14. Vasquez added 10 points and Mendoza finished with eight points. Javy Perez made seven points and Leal sank six points. Ross made a trey for three points and Gutierrez chipped in two points.

The Mules are currently on Christmas break but will play back into shape in the 57^th Fibermax Holiday Classic December 29-31. The Mules will play host to the Slaton Tigers January 5 and travel to Idalou to play the Idalou Wildcats January 8. The Mules will jump into district action January 15 when they host the Littlefiel

Lady Mules vs. Lub. Roosevelt (12-15-2015)

The Lady Mules played host to the undefeated Lady Eagles of Lubbock Roosevelt Tuesday night. The Eagles were 14-0 going into the night. The Lady Mules were not at full strength with two girls playing sick but others stepped up their game.

The Lady Mules may have shocked the Eagles in the first period and jumped out to a 12-3 lead. Roosevelt tried to make a comeback in the second period but could only trim one point off the Lady Mule lead.

The Lady Mules continued to hold down the Eagles in the third period and added five points to their lead. The Lady Mules cruised to a 48-38 win in the final period.

“I think some folks maybe surprised tomorrow when they see the results of our game tonight,” said Lady Mule coach Carey Sudduth. “We had two girls that were very sick and one had an injured hand.”

“But the break will give us time to heal up and we should be ready to go by the time we start the Holiday Tournament in Lubbock.”

The Eagles opened the game with a free throw to briefly take the lead. Conley Niblett blocked back-to-back shots before she went coast-to-coast for a lay up that gave the Lady Mules the lead for good with six minutes left in the first period.

Brittany Mendoza crashed the offensive boards for a put back. Sadie Sudduth was fouled shooting and made a free throw. Mendoza passed cross court to Desi Gutierrez for a bucket.

The Eagles ended the Lady Mule seven-point scoring run with a free throw. Mendoza made her second hoop of the period with a 15-baseline jumper. The Eagles made one last free throw before the first quarter ended. Sydnie Sudduth drained a 3-pointer from the wing just prior to the horn. The Lady Mules led 12-3.

Niblett crossed the lane and kissed a left-handed hook shot off the glass to start the second period. An Eagle trey cut the Lady Mule lead to 14-6. Sy. Sudduth passed to Emily Precure for an eight-foot baseline jumper.

Back-to-back baskets by the Eagles cut the Lady Mule lead to six points. Niblett hit from the charity line and on the next trip down the floor took a pass from Mendoza for a 3-pointer from the wing.

Sa. Sudduth found Mendoza open for a 15-foot baseline shot. The Eagles made the final five points of the half to trail the Lady Mules 23-15 at the intermission.

Roosevelt made a run at the Lady Mules early in the second half but the Lady Mules took over to out score the Eagles 12-7.

The Lady Mules built a 48-31 lead with 1:10 left in the game before backing off of the Eagles.

Niblett paced the Lady Mules with 18 points and Sy. Sudduth scored 10 points. Mendoza added eight points and Yvonne Diaz and Sa. Sudduth made three points each. Gutierrez and Precure finished with two points each. Reagan Reynolds and Jasmine Garza chipped in a point each.

The Lady Mules are on Christmas break to heal their wounds and illness before entering the Fibermax Holiday Tournament December 29-31. The Lady Mules will host the Levelland Loboettes January 5 before starting district January 8 when the Lady Mules host the Shallowater Lady Mustangs.

JV Lady Mules vs. Lub. Roosevelt (12-15-2015)

The JV Lady Mules were shorthanded Tuesday night when they hosted the Lubbock Roosevelt Lady Eagles. The Eagles jumped out to an early start but the Lady Mules battled back in the second half.

The Eagles led 12-6 after one period and 22-12 at the half. The Lady Mules roared back with a 22 point third period to take a 34-28 lead into the final frame. The Lady Mules won the night 44-37.

The Lady Mule returned to the floor a different team after the intermission and played with an intensity that was lacking in the first half.

“We had a little discussion at half time and the girls came out with a different outlook,” said Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “We scored 22 points in the third period that was fueled by a combined 11 steals by Barron and Elizalde.”

Lillie Barrera picked an Eagle’s pocket and pushed the ball ahead to Brianne Barron for the hoop. The Eagles scored a hoop but Karla Bustillos drained a trey. Marilyn Melendez drove the paint for a hoop.

Barron made a steal and drove the floor for a basket. Ricarda Elizalde ripped away a rebound from a defensive player and put the ball back on the glass for a hoop. Elizalde then stole a pass at mid court and drove for a hoop to put the Lady Mules on top 25-24.

Elizalde took an in bound pass at the elbow and sank the 15-foot jumper. Roosevelt interrupted the Lady Mule 10-point scoring run with a hoop. Barrera scored from the elbow just before Roosevelt scored again.

Barron nailed a trey from the wing as the clock moved under one minute left to play. Barron then led a fast break to put the Lady Mules in front 34-28 with one period left to play.

The Lady Mules hit the cruise control in the final period for the win.

Barron set the scoring pace for the Lady Mules with 14 points. Bustillos made two treys for nine points and Elizalde finished with seven points. Melendez scored six points and Barrera made four points. Valarie Ambriz made three points and Noa Rojas chipped in one point.

The freshmen Mules were the bright spot Monday night when the Shallowater Mustangs came for a visit. The Mules fell behind early and trailed 16-12 after one period but clamped down on defense to take a 29-23 lead by the intermission.

The Mules continued to battle in the second half to hang on for a 48-42 win.

Shallowater scored the first six points of the game before the Mules answered with a delayed break. Ean Hasley passed to Julian Astorga for a hoop. The Mustangs quickly got the points back and then added a basket to extend the Shallowater lead to 10-2 with just less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Luke Leal saw Luis Franco open on the blocks and passed him the ball for a hoop on the blocks. Shallowater tossed the ball out of bounds on the Mules’ end of the floor. Leal took the in-bound pass and sank a trey from the corner to cut the Shallowater lead to 10-7.

Raul Sierra tossed to Franco breaking through the back door for an easy two points. Shallowater scored back-to-back hoops before Ethan Villa hit a trey from the corner. Shallowater ended the quarter with a hoop to lead 16-12.

Astorga drove the lane to start the second period. A long in-bound pass to Brady Martinez set him up to nail a three pointer from the wing. The Mustangs scored but Astorga put back an offensive rebound to get the points back.

Sierra saw a crack in the Shallowater defense and drove to the hoop with five and a half minutes remaining in the half to give the Mules their first lead of the night, 21-20. Franco made a steal at mid court and drove for a hoop.

Jacob DeLeon was fouled in the back court and made a charity toss to extend the Mule lead to 24-20. Leal picked a Mustang’s pocket and drove the floor for a hoop. Shallowater sank a trey before Luke Del Toro made a free throw. Martinez sank a shot from the free throw line to end the first half with the Mules on top 29-23.

The Mules started the third period with two free throws and a hoop but Shallowater came charging back to cut the Mules’ lead to 33-28. The Mules led 36-32 when the third period ended.

Astorga cleaned up the backside with a put back but Shallowater sank a trey to cut the Mule lead to 38-35 and then converted a three-point play to tie the game. Ean Hasley passed to Izaiah Hurtado breaking down the lane to re-crank the Mule offense.

Hurtado then picked off a pass and drove the floor and was fouled shooting. He made one free throw. Shallowater scored a hoop to cut the Mule lead to one point. Astorga dropped in an 18-foot jump shot to keep the Mules in front. Martinez made two free throws as Shallowater fouled to try and stay in the game. Sierra made the final free throw of the game to clinch the win with two seconds left in the game.

Astorga and Franco set the scoring pace for the Mules with 10 points each. Martinez finished with seven points and Leal and Hurtado added five points each. Sierra made four points and Del Toro and Villa dropped in three points each. DeLeon chipped in one point.

The Mules are taking the Christmas break and will return to action January 4 in Dimmitt against the Bobcats. The Mules will return home January 11 to host the Littlefield Wildcats.   

9th Lady Mules vs. Shallowater (12-14-2015)

The freshmen Lady Mules started their second loop of district Monday night with a trip to Shallowater to meet the Lady Mustangs. The Lady Mules had defeated the Mustangs in Muleshoe when the season started 42-17.

That loss seemed to inspire the Mustangs and they were determined not to allow the Lady Mules to win in Shallowater’s house. But the Lady Mules proved to be up to the challenge and slipped out of Shallowater with a 22-20 win.

The Mustangs took advantage of the Lady Mules lack of ability to drop the ball in the hoop and jumped out to a 5-2 lead by the end of the first period. The Lady Mules’ shooting woes continued in the second period and Shallowater led 11-3 by the intermission.

Despite not scoring the Lady Mules used a tough defense to just trail by eight points at the half. Keely Dunham had scored the Lady Mules only basket in the first half and Maddison Price chipped in a free throw in the second period.

Coach Sheri Veazy reminded her girls of the two words that are the Lady Mules’ game plan. “We must stay PATIENT and run our offense,” Veazy said. “Run the plays and allow the offense to work. We must also play with INTENSITY from the opening tip to the final horn.”

The Lady Mules stepped up their game in the second half with Kinsey Parker draining a trey in the third period. Dunham and Reina Regalado both added a bucket and Kayla Torres chipped in a free throw.

The third period defense by the Lady Mules held the Mustangs to five points to cut the Shallowater lead to 16-11 with eight minutes left to play.

Kyndal Miller made a pair of steals that translated to points for the Lady Mules in the final period. Natalie Diaz made a pair of free throws to tie the game with time running down.

Dunham patrolled the paint on defense and owned the blocks on offense. She made three hoops in the final period and Alyssa Wheeler sank a charity toss. Diaz made a bucket prior to making the critical free throws.

“We did not shoot well in this game and were only five of 18 from the free throw line,” continued Veazy. “Key players that normally score were silenced tonight. I am not sure I took a breath during the fourth quarter. It feels good to be finished with Shallowater for this season.”

Dunham led the Lady Mules with 10 points. Diaz made all four of her points in the final period and Parker sank a trey. Regalado made two points. Wheeler, Torres and Price chipped in one point each.

The Lady Mules are currently on their Christmas break and will return to action January 4 when they host the Dimmitt Bobbies.
