JV Lady Mules vs. Abernathy (
11-23-15)
The JV Lady Mules blew up the
scoreboard in the third period Monday night to defeat the always tough
Abernathy Lady Lopes. The Lady Mules trailed 13-15 at the intermission but an
inspired team returned to the floor to pump in 17 points while holding the
Lopes to just seven points. The Lady Mules led 30-22 to start the final period.
The Lady Mules held off a
surge by the Lopes in the final quarter for a 43-38 win.
Lily Barrera scored from the
blocks to start the Lady Mule scoring run with 7:05 left in the third period to
tie the game. Briana Barron picked off a Lopes’ pass in the back court, turned,
drove to the hoop and was fouled. She made a free throw to give the Lady Mules
a 16-15 lead.
Karla Bustillos expanded the
margin with a 3-pointer from the wing. Barrera made two hoops in less than a
minute and Barron scored on a feed from Bustillos. The Lady Mules continued to
score to extended their lead to 28-15 before the Lopes finally scored on an
inbound play with three minutes remaining in the period.
Ricarda Elizalde passed to
Barrera under the hoop for the Lady Mules final bucket of the quarter with 2:15
still on the clock in the third period for a 30-17 Lady Mule lead. The Lopes
cut the lead by five points before the period ended with the Lady Mules leading
30-22.
Abernathy tied the game at
30-30 with 4:25 left to play before Bustillos drained a trey from the top of
the key. The Lady Mules never trailed after that. Barron converted a fast break
pass from Cassidy Cage to a basket.
Marilyn Melendez finished a
pair of fast breaks with the Lady Mules whipping the ball down the floor and
into the hands of Melendez. Bustillos scored twice inside the arc to clinch the
game for the Lady Mules.
Bustillos set the scoring
pace for the Lady Mules with 16 points that included two treys. Barrera dropped
in 13 points with eight points being in the third period. Barron finished with
ten points and she scored six of those in the third quarter. Melendez chipped
in all four of her points in the final quarter.
The Lady Mules hosted the
Hale Center Lady Owls Tuesday night and will take on all comers in the Friona
Squaws Invitational Tournament December 3-5. The Lady Mules will return home
December 8 to host the Floydada Lady Winds.
