L.Mules vs. Floydada

The Lady Mules ran roughshod
over the Floydada Lady Winds Tuesday night with a 50-25 win. The Lady Mules
used the game as a springboard to take second place in the Abernathy Antelope
Shootout.
A stingy defense by the Lady
Mules completely shut down the Winds in the first period. Conley Niblett
dominated in the paint with six points in the opening period and Reagan
Reynolds scored four fast break points.
Brittney Mendoza sank a trey
from the wing. Sadie Sudduth drained a trey from the corner on an in bound play
and finished a fast break for five first period points. Sydnie Sudduth made a
pair of free throws and the Lady Mules led 20-0 after the first eight minutes.
The Lady Mules lost some
intensity in the second period with Sy. Sudduth making all three points. The
Winds made up a little ground with nine points. The Lady Mules led 23-9 at the
half.
The Lady Mules finished the
game with a solid performance scoring 13 points in the third period and 14 in
the final quarter.
Niblett started the second
half with a free throw. Sa. Sudduth nailed a trey from the top of the key. Sy.
Sudduth made a steal and passed to sister Sa. Sudduth on running on the break.
Sa. Sudduth finished the break and was fouled making the hoop. She converted
the three-point play by making the free throw.
Floydada made a free throw
and a hoop. Sa. Sudduth finished a fast break to give the Lady Mules a 32-12
lead with five minutes left in the third period. Yvonne Diaz scored in the
paint and Desi Gutierrez hit from just inside the arc at the top of the key.
Floydada finished the third
period with a pair of hoops in the third period. The Lady Mules led 36-16 when
the final period started.
Sa. Sudduth sank a trey from
the top of the key after Floydada had made a hoop. Sa. Sudduth fired a
half-court pass to Reynolds for a fast break hoop. Niblett made a free throw
after being fouled attempting to put back an offensive rebound.
Sa. Sudduth passed to
Reynolds in the paint for a basket. Floydada made a trey. Sa. Sudduth made a
15-foot baseline shot to double up on the Winds 46-23. Floydada’s final basket
came with two minutes left in the game.
Sy. Sudduth drove the lane
for a hoop and Gutierrez put back a rebound that ended the game.
Sa. Sudduth set the scoring
pace with 16 points and Sy. Sudduth pumped in nine points. Reynolds and Niblett
finished with eight points each. Gutierrez dropped in four points and Mendoza
chipped in three points.
The Lady Mules battled their
way through the Abernathy Antelope Tournament to play in the championship game
Saturday against the Nazareth Swiftettes.
Nazareth proved to be to much
for the Lady Mules Saturday evening with a final score of 49-24. The Swiftettes
jumped out to a 13-7 lead at the end of the first period and 24-16 at the half.
Nazareth out distanced the Lady Mules 25-8 in the second half.
“We played four really tough
games in this tournament and got two a couple of good wins out of it,” said
Lady Mule coach Carey Sudduth. “We are trying to build a team and I think we
grew up this weekend.”
Diaz and Sy. Sudduth led the
Lady Mules with seven points each. Niblett finished with five points, Sa.
Sudduth made three points and Emily Precure chipped in two points.
The Lady Mules hosted the
Lubbock Roosevelt Eagles Tuesday night before taking their Christmas break. The
Lady Mules return to action in the 57th Fibermax Caprock Holiday
Tournament December 29-31. January 5 the Lady Mules will host the Levelland
Loboettes before starting district play, January 8, at home against the
Shallowater Lady Mustangs.
