7th Mules vs. Dimmitt
(11-19-2015)
Changing sports is more
difficult than many fans may think. The seventh grade Mules just completed an
undefeated football season then worked out a few days before playing their
first basketball game of the season.
The Mules appeared to still
be in the process of removing their pads as they fell to the Dimmitt Bobcats
45-37. Joe Gutierrez seemed to change his uniform a bit quicker than some of
his teammates as he lead the Mules with 27 points. Fourteen of those points
were in the third period.
Dimmitt jumped out to a 4-0
lead before Gutierrez made a driving lay up to put the Mules on the board.
Gutierrez made back-to-back hoops late in the opening period to cut the Dimmitt
lead to 10-6. Jacob Toscano scored from the blocks to end the first period with
the Mules trailing 14-8.
Kurt Rodriguez put back an
offensive rebound to start the second period. Gutierrez was fouled driving the
lane and dropped in a free throw. Before the Bobcats could cross the time line
Gutierrez made a steal and drove to the hoop for a basket.
The Bobcats scored three
unanswered hoops to end the first half leading the Mules 22-13.
Gutierrez could not keep pace
with Dimmitt in the third period as the Bobcats put 19 points on the board to
his 14. The Mules trailed 41-27 to start the final period.
The Mules clamped down their
defense in the final period and only allowed the Bobcats to put four points on
the board. Gutierrez and Rodriguez added a pair of baskets each in the final
period and Toscano dropped in one.
Gutierrez led the Mules with
27 points. Rodriguez added six points and Toscano made four.
