8th Lady Mules vs. Littlefield (1-12-2015)

The eighth grade Lady Mules turned the tables on the Littlefield Lady Cats in the second meeting of the two teams this season. The Lady Mules did not fare well on the Littlefield hardwoods.

“My girls looked like polar opposites from the last time they played Littlefield,” said Lady Mule coach Jalissa King. They cam out ready to play aggressive and with the desire to win. Citlalli Vargas had five steals and Alyssa Wheeler made four. This was a great turnaround from last time.”

There were just three ties in the game and Littlefield never led.

Kyndal Miller was fouled in the act of shooting just 20 seconds into the game. She netted both free throws to put the Lady Mules on top. The Cats tied the game but Keely Dunham broke the tie with a bucket off an inbound play with 35 second left in the period. The Lady Mules led 4-2 after one quarter.

Littlefield tied the game just five seconds into the second quarter. Miller played the trash man and cleaned up the backside for the Lady Mules and scored with a put back. The Cats tied the game for the final time with 3:30 left in the first half.

Vargas broke the tie with a six-foot baseline jumper. She then stole the long Cat inbound pass and drove to the hoop for a lay up. Natalie Diaz was hacked while shooting but made both shots from the charity line. The Lady Mules led 12-9 at the intermission.

Miller had the hot hand for the Lady Mules in the third period and made all eight Lady Mule points in the period. She made a put back to open the second half, went coast-to-coast for a lay up, hit from the elbow and put back an offensive rebound to end the quarter. The Lady Mules increased their lead to 20-13.

The Lady Mules did not back off in the final period and clamped down on defense and gave up only one basket. Wheeler scored with a put back and Dunham sank a shot from just inside the free throw line.

Dunham followed on a fast break and put back the miss for a basket. Raina Regalado was fouled while shooting and made both free throws. Miller made one-of-two free throws and Maddison Price ended all scoring with a put back.

Miller set a torrid pace for the Lady Mules with 13 points. Dunham finished with six points and Vargas made four points. Diaz, Regalado, Wheeler and Price chipped in two points each.

The eighth grade B-team Lady Mules came up just short of Littlefield 28-20. The Lady Mules made a run at the Cats in the final period by out scoring Littlefield 10-5. Abriana Mendoza set the scoring pace with nine points. Madison Hasley and Michelle Reyes finished with four points each.

“We had a tough beginning to our game,” continued Coach King. “But in the fourth quarter we almost had a come back. Abriana Mendoza had eight steals and Madison Hasley added four steals.”

The Lady Mules hosted Friona Monday and will travel to Tulia January 26.
