The Lady Mules had surprised two opponents in the Texas State Girls Basketball Playoffs and brought home the gold ball trophies as proof. Shallowater did not seem to want to take the chance of being the Lady Mules next surprise victim.

The site for the game was Texas Tech’s cavernous United Supermarket Arena.

Whether it was the size of the facility or the site picture provide by the free-standing goals the Lady Mules struggled to find a scoring rhythm in the first half. Shallowater took advantage and ran out to a 30-9 lead by the intermission.

The Lady Mules made adjustments at the half and made a valiant effort to make it a game they could be proud of in the second half. The Lady Mules cut the Shallowater lead to 12 in the fourth period. Shallowater held on for a 49-35 win.

Sydnie Sudduth was fouled attempting a driving lay up and made both free throws early in the opening period. Dani Diaz sank a free throw for the Lady Mules only other point of the period. Shallowater led the Lady Mules 19-3 after one period.

Diaz pulled up on a drive and sank a jump shot from near the elbow for the Lady Mules first hoop of the game. Sy. Sudduth penetrated the defense for a lay up and Conley Niblett made a pair from the charity line to end the first half.

Sy. Sudduth started the second half with a free throw. Niblett scored in the paint and D. Diaz sank a 3-pointer from the wing. Yvonne Diaz cleaned up an offensive rebound and put it up on the glass in the hoop.

Sadie Sudduth made back-to-back jump shots before the third quarter ended. The Lady Mules had cut the difference to 39-22.

Shanice Rosas took a pass from Sa. Sudduth and battled her way to the hoop for a basket. Sa. Sudduth dropped in a trey from the top of the key and Sy. Sudduth hit from behind the arc from the wing. D. Diaz finished a fast break and then ended her high school career with a trey from the wing.

D. Diaz led the Lady Mules in her final game with 11 points. Sy. Sudduth finished with eight points and Sa. Sudduth made all seven of her points in the second half. Niblett dropped in five points. Rosas and Y. Diaz added two points each.

Shallowater defeated both Wall and Idalou in the Region I Tournament and will represent District 2-3A in the Texas State Tournament in San Antonio March 5-7.

The Lady Mules will now transition to their Spring sports of choice before returning to the hardwoods.
