8th Lady Mules vs. Tulia & MJHS Tourny (1-25&28&30-2016)
The eighth grade Lady Mules had to over come a large deficit Monday evening
against the Tulia Lady Hornets. Val Toscano scored the Lady Mules only point in
the first quarter against Tulia. The Hornets led 10-1 but the Lady Mules came
back to win 22-17.
The Lady Mules lost their opening round game in the Muleshoe Invitational
Tournament 38-12 to the Morton Maidens Thursday evening but bounced back
Saturday morning to defeat the Olton Fillies 23-12.
The Lady Mules lost their third place game to the Melrose Lady Buffs by
just four points.
The Lady Mules had cut their deficit to Tulia to 13-12 by the end of the
second period. Anahi Sandoval got the come back started with a free throw 10
seconds into the second period. She later dropped in a basket along with a
second free throw.
Toscano went coast-to-coast for a lay up. She later sank a free throw and
drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Jill Rojas chipped in a free throw as the
Lady Mules out scored the Hornets 11-3 to slash the lead.
Tulia hung on to their lead by out scoring the Lady Mules 3-2 in the third
quarter. Emily Mora scored the Lady Mules only basket in the third
quarter.
The Lady Mules took over in the final frame with Valeria Carreaga making
two baskets to give the Lady Mules the lead for good. Sandoval and Kehvia
Edwards each added a hoop for the win.
Toscano led the Lady Mules with seven points and Sandoval finished right
behind her with six points. Carreaga scored all four of her points in the final
period. Mora and Edwards added two points each and Rojas chipped in one
point.
Against the Morton Maidens Thursday afternoon Sandoval scored five points.
Mia Reyna dropped in three points and Mora added two points. Edwards and Rojas
chipped in a free throw each.
The Lady Mules stampeded the Olton Fillies 23-12 Saturday morning to play
in the game for third place.
Sandoval dropped in a free throw to get the Lady Mules started. Rojas hit a
six-foot baseline jumper and the Lady Mules trailed 6-3 after one
quarter.
Rojas hit from 15 feet to cut the Olton lead to 6-5. Joceline Ramirez drove
the floor to answer a pair of free throws by the Fillies. Olton made a basket
with 30 seconds left in the half to lead the Lady Mules 10-7.
Mia Reyna scored in the paint in the third period to cut the Fillies’ lead
to 10-9. Rojas scored on a in bound play to give the Lady Mules the lead for
good. Toscano sank a buzzer-beater trey that seemed to take the fight out of the
Fillies.
The Lady Mules led 14-10 to start the final period.
Rojas took a pass from Edwards and scored in the paint. Sandoval was fouled
and made one of her free throws. Reyna sank a six-foot jumper inside the free
throw line. Ramirez dropped in and 18-foot basket and Reyna sank a baseline
jumper to end the game.
Rojas led the Lady Mules with eight points and Reyna made all six of her
points in the second half. Ramirez added four points and Toscano hit a
3-pointer. Sandoval chipped in two points.
The Lady Mules lost their third place game to the Melrose Lady Buffs by
just four points but stats were not available at press time. The game conflicted
with the Mules championship game.
The Lady Mules hosted the Littlefield Lady Cats Monday evening. They will
close out their season February 8 when they host the Friona Maidens.
