9th Mules vs.
Littlefield (1-11-2016)
The freshmen Mules remain
undefeated in district by defeating the Littlefield Wildcats to start the
second round of district. The Mules defeated Littlefield 33-25 Monday night.
The Mules did not have any
single big quarter but gradually built and held the lead for all but two
minutes of the game.
Raul Sierra got the Mules
started by putting back an offensive rebound for points thirty seconds into the
game. Luke Del Toro set up Brady Martinez with a pass to the baseline. Martinez
made the eight foot jump shot.
Luke Leal made a reverse lay
up with five minutes left to play in the first quarter. Leal passed to Martinez
breaking to the hoop for an easy lay up. Isaiah Hurtado lifted up a tear drop
that fell through the net for a 10-7 lead as the first period drew to a close.
The Wildcats took a one-point
lead early in the second period and held it until Hurtado passed to Luis Franco
on the blocks. Franco turned in the lane and scored. Rigo Mendoza ripped down
an offensive rebound and went back up for a hoop.
Adrian Bustillos fed Ethan
Villa on the blocks for a hoop. Hurtado started a fast break with a quick pass
to Villa and he relayed the ball to Corbin Hardwick for a baseline jumper to
complete the break. The Mules led 18-15 at the half.
Del Toro and Sierra heated up
in the third period and made two hoops each. Franco drove the floor for the
final hoop of the quarter. The Mules had extended their lead to 28-22 by the
end of the third quarter.
Mendoza made a free throw to
start the fourth period. Littlefield cut the Mule lead by three points before
Sierra put back a rebound. And Hurtado stepped back from under the hoop to make
the final two points of the game.
Sierra led the Mules with
quiet eight points. Martinez, Franco, Hurtado and Del Toro dropped in four
points each. Mendoza added three points. Leal, Villa and Hardwick chipped in
two points each.
The Mules defended their home
floor Monday night against the Friona Braves. The Mules are scheduled to play
in the Dimmitt Tournament and will travel to Tulia January 25 to play the
Hornets. The Mules will return home February 15 for their final game of the
season.
