JV Lady Mules vs. Shlwtr (1-8-2016)

The JV Lady Mules utilized hustle on both offense and defense to hang with the Shallowater Fillies Friday night. Cassidy Cage put the Lady Mules in front 27-26 with a driving hoop as the clock wound down.

The Fillies scored a hoop to retake the lead. Cage made a drive to the hoop and was fouled. She made one free throw to tie the game at 28-28. Shallowater took the ball to the other end and fired up a trey just prior to the buzzer sounding. The ball swished the net before the final buzzer ended. Shallowater won the game 31-28.

The Lady Mules raced out to an 8-3 lead in the first quarter. Karla Bustillos scored first basket. Brianna Barron fed Lillie Barrera for a hoop from the blocks. Marilyn Melendez put back an offensive rebound and was fouled. She converted the old-fashion three-point play. Barron sank one free throw before the quarter ended.

Shallowater came back strong in the second quarter to out score the Lady Mules 11-5 to take a 14-13 lead over the Lady Mules at the intermission.

Melendez made one free throw. Barrera scored in the paint and Barron went coast-to-coast for a lay up with seconds remaining in the half.

Shallowater increased their lead to 24-22 in the third quarter as the two teams battled back and forth. Briana Velasquez took a pass from Barron to finish a fast break a minute into the third period. She added a second hoop before the quarter ended. Melody Moran put back a rebound for a hoop and Barron made a free throw. Barrera scored in the paint to keep the Lady Mules close.

Bustillos sank a 3-pointer from the top of the arc early in the final frame. Cage made the Lady Mules final three points.

Barrera led the Lady Mules with six points and Bustillos was one point behind with five points. Melendez, Velasquez and Barron scored four points each. Cage made all three of her points in the final period and Moran chipped in two points.

The Lady Mules will traveled to Dimmitt Tuesday night to face the Bobbies and will return home Friday to host the Littlefield Lady Cats.
