JV Mules vs. Bovina &
Littlefield (1-11 & 15-2016)
The JV Mules closed out their
non-district portion of the season with a bang Monday night in a makeup game
with the Bovina Mustangs. The Mules out paced Bovina in each of the four
periods by margins of two to 11 points. The Mules defeated the Mustangs 57-36.
The Mules hosted the
Littlefield Wildcats to open district Friday night. The Mules exploded for 25
points in the second period to lead the Wildcats 27-18 at the half. By the end
of the third period the Wildcats had tied the game and out score the Mules
19-10 in the final period to defeat the Mules 53-49.
Eight different Mules scored
two points each in the opening period to take a 16-13 lead by the end of the
first period. The Mules continued to run away from the Mustangs in the second
period with Reece Orozco hitting three 3-pointers. The Mules exploded for 19
points in the second period for a 35-21 lead at the half.
The Mules out distanced
Bovina 22-15 in the second half.
Orozco led the Mules with 13
points. Kevin Gonzales finished with nine points and Tre Villa dropped in seven
points. Mikey Lozano made six points, Javy Perez made five and Isaiah Perez and
Ean Hasley scored four points each. Kevin Mendoza made three points and Eric
Herrera, JoJo Rejino and Brendon Rodriquez chipped in two points each.
The Mules got off to a slow
start. Coleman Preston made the Mules only two points of the first period. The
Mules trailed 5-2 after one quarter.
Gonzales got the Mules
started in the second period with a basket. He later made a fast break lay up
and converted a pair of free throws. Orozco scored on an inbound play, nailed a
3-pointer with one minute left in the half and added two free throws before the
half ended.
Hasley drained a pair of
treys and sandwiched a basket between
the two 3-pointers. Jacob Kettner put back an offensive rebound and made a lay
up before the quarter ended.
Gonzales was fouled on a put
back and converted the free throw for an old-fashion three-point play. He added
a second hoop before the quarter ended. Orozco scored a trey from the top of
the key and Isaiah Perez took a pass from Lozano for a hoop. Preston started
the second half with a lay up.
The Mules could not hold down
the Wildcats in the final period. Littlefield out scored the Mules 19-10 for
the win.
Gonzales led the Mules with
16 points and Orozco finished with 13 points that included three treys. Hasley
scored eight points and Kettner and Preston made four points each. Eric Herrera
and Perez chipped in two points each.
The Mules hosted the Friona
Chieftains Tuesday night and will travel to Tulia to play the Tulia Hornets
Friday.
