7th Mules vs. Kermit (9-25-2014)

The seventh grade Mules shutout the Kermit Yellow Jackets 18-0 Thursday afternoon in Benny Douglas Stadium. Kermit kicked off to start the game and Matthew Alarcon returned the ball 17 yards to the Mule 31.

Hector Arras swept wide right for five yards on first down. Damian Juarez tossed to Derek Barron and he rambled for 39 yards to the Kermit 25. Kelan Florez kept up the middle for 11 yards to the Kermit 14.

Arras swept wide left and ran through two tackles for nine-yards. The Mules were facing fourth down and one-yard needed for a first down from the Kermit five-yard line. Juarez kept up the middle and scored from five-yards out with 4:43 left in the first period. The two-point conversion failed and the Mules led 6-0.

Kermit took the ensuing kickoff and drove to the Mule 25 by the start of the second quarter. Nathan Rodriguez got in the backfield and made the tackle for a yard loss on first down. Kermit gained two yards on second down. Dashad Cagle and Rodriguez teamed up in the Yellow Jacket backfield for a five-yard loss.

Juarez stepped in front of a Yellow Jacket pass at the Mule 16 and returned 10 yards to the Mule 26.

The Mules could not move the ball and Rodriguez booted the ball high enough to prevent a run back and the punt netted 34 yards.

Kermit gained one first down but Jimmy Villa picked off a Yellow Jacket pass at the Mule 14. The first half ended with the Mules leading 6-0.

The Mules kicked off to start the second half. Barron cut the legs from under the Yellow Jacket running back for the loss of a yard on first down. Arras and Juarez made the stop before the Yellow Jackets could gain a first down.

Kermit needed a yard for a first down but Rodriguez stripped the ball from the hands of the Yellow Jacket running back and raced 54 yards for a Mule defensive touchdown. The two-point conversion failed and the Mules led 12-0 with 6:35 left in the third period.

The Mules fumbled a Kermit punt but still did not allow the Yellow Jackets to score. The third quarter ended with the Mules leading 12-0.

Juarez scrambled for 23 yards to the Kermit 42 before Arras carried up the middle for five more yards. Juarez connected with Jose Cardenas at the Kermit 22 and he was finally pulled down at he Yellow Jacket six-yard line for a gain of 31 yards.

Juarez scored on a run up the middle with seven minutes remaining in the game. But that was the final points of the game.

Juarez led the Mules in rushing with five carries for 45 yards and two touchdowns. Hector Arras rushed six times for 43 yards, Florez ran twice for 18 yards and Cardenas rushed once for 15 yards.

Juarez connected on two of three passes for 70 yards. Kelan Florez connected on one of two passes for two yards.

Derek Barron was the Mules lead receiver with one catch for 39 yards. Joel Cardenas caught one pass for 30 yards and Cristian Bustillos caught one pass for two yards.

Hector Arras led the Mule defense with seven tackles and Matthew Alarcon made four stops. Nathan Rodriguez had three and half tackles and Elio Sanchez made three stops. Dashad Cagle had a sack. Damian Juarez and Sanchez both made interceptions. Nathan Rodriguez forced a fumble by ripping it out of the Kermit running back’s hands and returning it for a touchdown.   

The Mules will host the Abernathy Antelopes Thursday afternoon at 5:00 PM.
