Mules vs. Friona & Shallowater (4-19&22-2016)

The Muleshoe Mule baseball team wrapped up their regular season with losses to Friona and Shallowater and are the fourth place team in District 2-3A. The Mules will play the District Champion River Road Wildcats for Bi-District at a place and time yet to be announced.

Friona defeated the Mules 5-1 Tuesday afternoon in Muleshoe and to Shallowater 13-3.

Jason Florez got the start against Friona and gave up four runs through five and one-third innings. He gave up a single to the first batter he faced and a double to second. A second double scored the two runs before Florez got his first strike out.

Despite a JoJo Rejino one-out base hit the Mules could not score in the first inning. The Mules continued to put of zeros until the sixth inning. Rejino took the count full and fouled off a pitch before drawing a one-out walk.

Ryan Rodriguez also walked. Florez sent a fly ball to right field to score Rejino for the Mules only run.

Florez struck out two and pitched a ground ball that Reese Orozco scooped up and threw to Rejino at first base. A walk and back-to-back base hits scored Friona’s only run in the third inning.

The Chiefs added one run in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to defeat the Mules.

The Mules got off to a quick start at Shallowater with Bryce Mauricio and Rejino drawing lead off walks. Mauricio went to second on a wild pitch and both Mauricio and Rejino advanced a base on a second wild pitch.

Florez sent a groundball sacrifice to short stop to score Mauricio. That was the Mules only run of the first inning.

A Mule error, a walk and a second Mule error set Shallowater up for a big inning. A sacrifice fly and a double scored three runs for the Mustangs. Shallowater led 3-1 after one complete inning.

The Mules drew three consecutive walks but ran themselves into trouble that cost them two outs with no runs. A strike out ended the inning with the Mules scoring no runs.

Shallowater sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning and scored four runs. Eleven Mustangs batted in the bottom of the third and scored six runs.

Rodriguez reached first when the Shallowater centerfielder dropped his fly ball. Florez sacrificed Rodriguez to second base and Danny Campos singled to left field to score Rodriguez.

The Mules added one run in the top of the fourth inning. Blake Parker doubled to left centerfield to lead off the fourth inning. Moises Vasquez singled to left field and Mauricio singled to drive in Parker for the Mules final run.

No place and time for the Mules’ Bi-District game with River Road has not been announced by press time.
