9th Mules vs. Littlefield

The freshmen Mules lost a
heartbreaker Monday evening to the Littlefield Wildcats. The Mules led 27-21 after
three quarters, but the Mules could not slow down the Wildcats’ comeback in the
final quarter.
Littlefield won the game
38-35.
Cesar Enriquez sank a
3-pointer from the right wing for the first points of the game. Two minutes
later he drove the lane for the Mules only five points of the first period.
Littlefield led 7-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Victor Velasquez put back
Enriquez missed free throw shot to tie the game. Joe Gutierrez and Velasquez
both scored to keep the game tied. Enriquez snapped the tie with a 3-pointer
from the wing to put the Mules in front 14-11 at the half.
The Mules were on fire when
the third quarter started. Gutierrez put back an offensive rebound to open the
second half. Enriquez was fouled while shooting and he made both free throws.
Enriquez sank a trey from the
left wing to give the Mules a 21-11lead one minute into the third quarter.
Velasquez scored from the blocks and Gutierrez drove the lane for a layup. The
Mules had scored 11 unanswered points to a 25-11 lead.
Littlefield scored the next
ten points to cut the Mule lead to 25-21. Enriquez pushed the ball ahead to
Velasquez running on a fast break for a layup. The Mules led 27-21 with one
quarter left to play.
Velasquez scored twice in the
first two minutes of the final period. Gutierrez hit from the elbow, and
Enriquez drove the baseline for a hoop. Littlefield outscored the Mules 17-8 in
the last quarter.
Enriquez led the Mules with
15 points. Velasquez added 12 points. Gutierrez wrapped up the Mules’ scoring
with eight points.
The Mules played in the
Dimmitt Tournament over the weekend. The Mules traveled to Idalou Monday and
will remain on the road January 22 in Dimmitt. The Mules are scheduled to
return home January 29 to host the Slaton Tigers.
