9th Mules vs.
Friona (12-2-2014)
The freshmen Mules had a
tough third period against the Friona Braves Monday evening. The Mules made a run
at making up the difference in the final quarter but the Braves hung on for a
45-41 win over the Mules.
Mikey Lozano drove
coast-to-coast for the first points of the game. Brendon Rodriquez finished a
fast break to tie the game. The game was back and forth with the Mules taking a
14-13 advantage after one quarter.
The second period was more of
the same and the Mules managed to hold the one point advantage to lead 21-20 at
the half.
The Braves got on a run in
the third period and scored the first seven points to lead 27-21. Lozano scored
the Mules first bucket with 3:33 left in the third quarter. The Braves had
built a 36-26 lead over the Mules with one quarter left to play.
Lozano drove the baseline for
a hoop to open the fourth period. Jacob Kettner was fouled shooting and made
one free throw. Rodriguez scored on an inbound play to cut the Brave lead to
37-31.
Lozano drove the floor for a
hoop. The next trip down the floor Lozano got Rodriguez the ball on the blocks
for a basket to cut the Friona lead to 37-35. Joseph Rejino tied the game from
the elbow.
Rodriguez was fouled shooting
and made both free throws to give the Mules a brief lead at 39-37. The Braves
took the lead on an old-fashion three-point play and never gave it up in the
final two and half minutes of the game.
Lozano paced the Mules with
18 points and Rodriguez finished with 16. Rejino added five points and Kettner
chipped in two points.
