JV Mules vs. Lubbock Roosevelt (12-16-2014)

The JV Mules traveled to Lubbock Roosevelt Tuesday and had a 36-26 advantage going into the final quarter. The Roosevelt Eagles made a run at the Mules in the final eight minutes but could only trim one point off the Mule lead. The Mules defeated the Eagles 50-41.

Aaryn Ross lobbed Donavan Gutierrez the ball near the hoop for the first two points of the game. The Eagles used an old-fashion three-point play to take a brief 3-2 advantage. Gutierrez passed to Tony Vasquez breaking to the hoop for a hoop.

Jesse Leal set up Dominik Hasley on the blocks for a short shot. Ross passed to Triston Boehning breaking down the back door for an easy two points. The Mules led 8-4 with three minutes left in the first period.

The Eagles battled back with a 7-1 rally to lead the Mules 11-9 after one period.

Roosevelt scored to start the second period but the Mules exploded with a pair of hoops to tie the game at 13-13. Boehning ran the floor and finished a fast break on back-to-back trips down the floor.

The Eagles made a hoop and added a pair of free throws to again take the advantage. Vasquez drove coast-to-coast for a lay up before Tim Perez drove from the right wing for a hoop to knot the game at 17-17 with four minutes left in the half.

Perez made a free throw and Vasquez dropped in a pair from the charity line. Vasquez picked off an Eagle pass and drove the floor for a hoop. Mario DeHoyas made the pass to Ross on the elbow for a basket.

The Eagles scored but the Mules came bounding down the floor with Ross passing ahead to Vasquez and he relayed the ball to Gutierrez in the paint for an easy hoop to end the half with the Mules leading 26-19.

The Mules extended their seven point lead to a 36-26 advantage going into the final period.

The Eagles made a free throw to start the final period. Leal pushed the ball ahead to Boehning for a basket. Boehning grabbed the defensive rebound and made the outlet pass to Leal. Leal drove the floor for a hoop just before the Eagles rallied with an 8-2 run to cut the Mule lead to 44-37.

Boehning and Vasquez nailed the door shut on the eagles with three free throws.

Boehning set the scoring pace with 17 points and Vasquez dropped in 10 by making six-of-six free throws. Perez finished with nine points and Gutierrez added six. Hasley and Leal made three points each and Ross chipped in two points.

The Mules took the Christmas break and are back in action January 2 when they travel to Lamesa to battle the Golden Tornados. The Mules will return home January 6 to host the Bovina Mustangs.
