Lady Mules vs. Floydada &
Abernathy Shootout (12-9&11-13-2014)
The Lady Mules jumped out to
an early lead Tuesday night in Floydada against the Lady Winds. The Winds had
caught up by the end of the first half and held on until the final period. The
Lady Mules took over to defeat the Winds 36-32.
The Lady Mules were in the
Abernathy Shootout over the weekend and fell to the Nazareth Swiftettes in the
opening round 42-25.
“We played good defense today
against a tall and talented team,” said Lady Mule coach, Carey Sudduth. “The
girls competed hard on every possession but we had a hard time scoring.”
“Nazareth has a tough
defensive team and have been really hurting teams with their press. They could
not hurt us with their press and had to pull out of it in the first period. I
was really proud of our kids today.”
The Tulia Hornets slipped
away from the Lady Mules in the second half of the consolation bracket 44-42.
The Lady Mules finished up the tournament Saturday with a 51-50 win over the
New Deal Lady Lions.
Conley Niblett drove the lane
for lay up to get the Lady Mules started at Floydada. She added a free throw
later and Sydnie Sudduth cut down the lane for a basket to put the Lady Mules
on top 5-2 with 2:35 left in the opening period.
Niblett made a steal in the
back court and was fouled going up for a shot. She made one-of-two free throws.
The Lady Mules led 8-4 after one period.
Niblett hit a 10-foot
baseline jumper to open the second period. Sadie Sudduth was fouled while
shooting and made one free throw. Niblett drove the baseline for a hoop and a
13-6 Lady Mule with 5:25 left in the half.
Floydada went on a 10-0
scoring run to end the half and claimed a 16-13 lead over the Lady Mules.
Sa. Sudduth dropped in a
3-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game and Niblett finished a fast
break. Niblett pushed the ball ahead to Shanice Rosas on a fast break. The Lady
Mules led 20-16 near the mid point of the third period.
Sa. Sudduth made it a
10-point Lady Mule run with her second trey of the quarter. Floydada came
roaring back with a pair of treys, a bucket and a free throw to take a 25-24
lead into the final period.
Sa. Sudduth dropped in her
third 3-pointer of the second half to open the fourth quarter. She added a
bucket from the elbow to put the Lady Mules ahead 29-25. The Winds tied the
game at 29-29 with just less than four and half minutes left in the game.
Sy. Sudduth put the Lady
Mules in front to stay by floating up a tear drop after driving from the left
side. Dani Diaz made a pair of free throws and Niblett scored in the paint. Sy.
Sudduth made the final point of the game from the charity line.
Sa. Sudduth and Niblett set
the scoring pace for the Lady Mules with 14 points each. Sy. Sudduth finished
with three points. Rosas and Diaz dropped in two points apiece and Yvonne Diaz
chipped in a point.
Nazareth led 20-8 at the
intermission in the first round of the Abernathy Shootout. Sy. Sudduth led the
Lady Mules in scoring by making six of her eight points in the final period.
D. Diaz finished with five
points and Niblett scored four. Sa. Sudduth and Angie Perez made three points
each. Y. Diaz chipped in one point.
Tulia ran out to an 11-6 lead
in the first period but came roaring back to out score the Hornets 20-6 in the
second period to take a 26-17 lead by the half. The Hornets returned in the
second half to out score the Lady Mules 27-16.
Niblett and D. Diaz set the
scoring pace with 11-points each. Y. Diaz scored all eight of her points in the
first half. Sy. Sudduth finished with six points and Sa. Sudduth added four.
Sasha Esparza chipped in two points.
The Lady Mules spotted New
Deal a 13-6 lead in the first period but scrambled back to tie the game at
23-23 by the intermission. The Lions had claimed a six point advantage by the
end of the third period.
The Lady Mules took over in
the final period and out scored the Lions 19-12 for the win.
Sa. Sudduth and Sy. Sudduth
led the Lady Mules with 13 points each. D. Diaz and Niblett scored 10 points
apiece. Esparza added four points and Y. Diaz chipped in one point.
The Lady Mules traveled to
Lubbock Roosevelt Tuesday to play the Lady Eagles. They will workout during the
Christmas break but will take the mandatory five days off. The Lady Mules will
play themselves back into shape in the Texico Wolverine Tournament December 29-31.
The Lady Mules return home January 6 to play the Bovina Lady Mustangs.
