JV Mules vs. Floydada &
Abernathy Shootout (12-9&11-13-2014)
The JV Mules had an excellent
week. They traveled to Floydada Tuesday and defeated the Whirlwinds 52-31.
Thursday the Mules started the Abernathy Shootout and defeated the Nazareth
Swifts 43-24.
The Mules squeaked by the
Lubbock Titans (a home school group) 38-35. The Mule defense held the Idalou
Wildcats to just three points in the third quarter and sailed to a 34-28 win
for the championship trophy.
Donavan Gutierrez picked a
Winds’ pocket and drove the floor to tie the game. The next trip down the floor
he dished the ball to Triston Boehning for a five-foot jumper to put the Mules
in front to stay with 5:15 remaining in the first period.
Aaryn Ross passed to Javy
Perez in the paint for a lay up. Tony Vasquez stole the ball from a Wind in the
front court and drove to the hoop to give the Mules a 9-7 lead at the end of
the first period.
Boehning finished a fast
break to crank the Mules motor in the second period. Ross made a free throw and
Boehning put back the rebound of Ross’ missed shot for a 14-9 Mule lead with
six minutes left in the half.
Ross nailed a 3-pointer from
the right wing, Boehning finished a break and Ross nailed a second trey before
the half ended with the Mules leading 25-21.
The Mules clamped down on
defense in the second half and held the Winds to just 10 points.
Boehning scored in the paint
to start the second half. Floydada hit a trey to cut the Mule lead to 27-24
thirty seconds into the second half. Before the Winds could score again the
Mules had pushed their lead out to 38-24 with Jesse Leal scoring five on the
Mules 11 points.
The Mules cruised through the
final quarter and out scored Floydada 12-2.
Boehning dominated the game
in the second and third periods to lead the Mules with 19 points. Ross finished
with 11 points and Leal scored all nine of his points in the second half. Vasquez made his four points in the
first half and Gutierrez made all three of his in the first quarter. Perez,
Eric Herrera and Mario DeHoyas chipped in two points each.
The Mules hammered Nazareth
12-2 in the first quarter and led 26-8 by the intermission. The Mules coasted
to the finish line. Leal led the Mules with 13 points, Vasquez and Gutierrez
added nine each. Ross scored four points, DeHoyas and Reece Orozco dropped in
three points apiece. Domnk Hasley chipped in two points.
Vasquez dropped in a
3-pointer to get the Mules started against the Titans. He added two more
buckets and Tim Perez made a basket to give the Mules a 9-8 lead after one
quarter. Leal led the way in the second period with five of the Mules’ 10
points for a 19-14 Mule lead at the half. The battle continued in the second
half with the Mules holding on for the win.
Vasquez set the pace for the
Mules with 11 of his 20 points coming in the final period. Leal dropped in
seven points, Ross added four and Hasley scored three. Perez and Orozco chipped
in two points each.
Idalou led the Mules 7-6
after one quarter and continued to lead the Mules 18-17 at the half. The Mules
clamped on the defense in the third quarter and out scored the Wildcats 8-3.
The Mules held down Idalou 9-7 in the final period.
Vasquez made four of the
Mules six first period points. Leal set the scoring pace with 10 points and
Vasquez finished with nine. Perez made all six of his points in the second half
and Gutierrez dropped in four points. Ross finished with three points and
Hasley chipped in two points in the championship game.
The Mules finished up 2014 at
Lubbock Roosevelt Tuesday night and do not return to action until January 2
when they travel to Lamesa. The Mules will host the Bovina Mustangs January 6,
2015.
