Lady Mules vs. Clovis (3-17-2015)
The Lady Mules proved to be flexible as well as
water proof Tuesday as they defeated the Clovis JV 8-5. Their game with the
Frenship JV was canceled and the Clovis Lady Cats JV were substituted. The game
was scheduled to be played in Muleshoe but was changed at the last minute to
Clovis.
When the Lady Mules arrived at the Lady Cats’ field
they were working feverishly to get the field ready to play. The outfield
sprinklers had malfunctioned and flooded the infield. A lot of dry dirt was
added to dry out the infield and second base was cover over and lost.
Much measuring and digging finally located the
illusive base just in time for the game to start. By then it was beginning to
sprinkle on the already wet field.
The Lady Mules were resilient and scored a run in
the top of the first inning to take the lead. Mireya Ruvalcaba took the count
full before drawing a leadoff walk. She stole second base. An error by the
third baseman allowed Adrianna Loya to reach first base.
Miranda De Bruin hit a ground ball to second base
and reached on a fielder’s choice. A. Loya was forced out at second and
Ruvulcaba advanced to third base. Sasha Esparza walked and Ruvulcaba stole home
to put the Lady Mules on top.
Clovis tied the game with a single and a double in
the bottom of the third inning. De Bruin struck out the third batter on a
called strike and got two batters to fly out to Brittany Mendoza at second
base.
Sasha Esparza reached on an error by the second
baseman. Leti Loya blasted a triple to the wall in left field to score Esparza.
L. Loya went home on a passed ball and the Lady Mules were on top, 3-1, to
stay.
The Lady Mules added four insurance runs in the top
of the sixth inning as the rain continued to pepper down on the wet field. Gabi
Chavez and L. Loya drew one-out walks. Mendoza sacrificed the runners over one
base and Yvonne Diaz singled to left field to score both Chavez and L. Loya.
Reagan Reynolds singled to left field. Both L. Loya
and Reynolds advanced a base on a wild pitch. Ruvalcaba singled to right field
to bring L. Loya and Reynolds across the plate to put the Lady Mules up 7-1.
An error, a single and a double allowed two Lady
Cats to score in the bottom of the sixth inning. De Bruin struck out three to
end the inning.
Esparza doubled to fence to lead off the final
inning and she scored on a throwing error to end the Lady Mule scoring.
A Lady Cat triple, a single and a sacrifice scored
the Lady Cats final two runs. Mendoza camped under a pop fly at second base and
Esparza chased down a fly ball to centerfield for the first two outs of the
bottom of the seventh inning. De Bruin struck out the final batter on three
pitches.
The Lady Mules are scheduled to travel to Forsan to
play the Lady Buffalos.
