MHS Tennis @ Levelland (3-12-2015)

Thirty-nine Muleshoe High School tennis players competed in Levelland’s SPCHEA Tournament Thursday on the campus of South Plains College. The team played 72 matches in the tournament and 28 brought home medals.

Muleshoe was competing with 24 other schools in the tournament. 

“It was a perfect day for tennis,” said Muleshoe tennis coach Jody Wood. “The temperature was near 70 degrees with very little wind and a sunny day. This was our first tournament as the previous two were cancelled due to bad weather. I was really proud of how the kids played.”

The A division winners were Denisse Ramirez and Aaryn Ross in the Mixed Doubles. They defeated SPCHEA 8-5, Christoval 8-6 and Sundown 8-3.

Felipe Guerrero and Edyy Elizalde placed third in boys doubles by defeating Olton 8-5, lost to Idalou 7-9 and defeated Plainview Christian 8-3 for the medal.

The B division winners started with Jesse Leal that won first in boys singles by defeating Roosevelt 7-1, Crosbyton 8-4, Southcrest 8-1 and Muleshoe 8-1. Israel Ramirez won 1st in boys singles by defeating Sudan 8-2, Hale Center 8-5 and Sudan 8-6.

Braden Bessire and Danny Campos won first in boys doubles by defeating Sudan 7-1, SPCHEA 8-5 and Levelland 8-2. Rachelle Whitworth placed first in girls singles. She defeated Lazbuddie 8-0, Plainview Christian 8-7 with an 8-6 tie breaker and Morton 8-5.

Kayla Preston and Hallie Myatt won first girls doubles by defeating Loop 7-0, Plains 8-4 and Muleshoe 8-5. Cassidy Cage and Jacob Kettner placed first in mixed doubles. They defeated Estacado 8-1, Morton 8-4 and Muleshoe 8-0.

Yavet Elizalde placed second in boys singles by defeating Sudan 8-0, Littlefield 8-1 and Muleshoe 1-8. Jason Florez and Donovan Gutierrez placed second in boys doubles. They defeated Sudan 8-0, Seagraves 8-3 and fell to Sudan 3-8. 

Marissa Reyes and Jasmine Garza placed second in girls doubles by defeating Estacado 8-2, Abernathy 8-4, Sudan 8-6 and lost to Muleshoe 5-8. Alee Sanchez and Izaiah Perez placed second in mixed doubles. They defeated Slaton 7-4, Littlefield 8-0, Seagraves 8-7 with a 7-5 tie breaker and lost to Muleshoe 0-8.

Sophia Sianez placed third in girls singles by defeating Littlefield 7-0, lost to Loop 2-8 and defeated Earth 8-3. Gloria Gonzalez and Imelda Salcido placed third in girls doubles. They defeated Roosevelt 8-2, Plains 8-3, lost to Southcrest 7-8 with a 5-7 tie breaker and  Slaton 8-0.

Anghy Avilez and Xiomara Regalado won third place in girls doubles by defeating Loop 8-4, Roosevelt 8-5, lost to Lazbuddie 2-8 and defeated Lazbuddie 8-5. Dustin Smith won Consolation in boys singles by losing to Sundown 7-8 with an 8-6 tie breaker but defeated
Plainview Christian 8-4 and Seagraves 8-4.

Jackie Rayas and Rossy Diaz won Consolation in girls doubles. They lost to Lazbuddie 0-8 but bounced back to defeat Loop 8-3, Roosevelt 8-5 and Muleshoe 8-5.

Other Muleshoe players included Dominik Hasley in boys singles He lost to Christoval 1-8, and Roosevelt 6-8. Jesse Easily played in boys singles and lost to Seagraves 2-8 and bounced back to defeat Littlefield 8-2. Easily had to forfeit the Consolation Match to travel to the Shallowater Track Meet.

Aron Chacon lost in boys singles to Sudan 1-8 and Plainview Christian 1-8. JJ Gandara and Tre Villa lost in boys doubles to Seagraves 7-8 and SPCHEA 6-8. Lily Barrera and Conley Niblett defeated Roosevelt 8-1 in girls doubles but lost to Sundown 5-8.

Noemi Hererra and Roxanne Mata lost to Lazbuddie 5-8 in girls doubles before defeating Sudan 8-5 and then lost to Muleshoe 5-8 in girls doubles. Dezzy Gutierrez and Antonio Vasquez defeated Roosevelt 7-1 in mixed doubles but lost to Plains 3-8.

The MHS tennis team will travel to Sundown March 25 for a tournament.
