8th L.Mules vs. Abr. (12-16-13)

8th L.Mules vs. Abr. (12-16-13)

The eighth grade Lady Mules jumped on the Abernathy Lady Lopes early and went on a 10 point scoring run that lasted until the final 15 seconds of the quarter. The Lady Mules led 10-2 after one period.

The Lady Mules kept their foot on the gas to defeat Abernathy 37-24. The win extended the Lady Mule season record to 5-0.

“We needed a tough game like this and Abernathy pressed the entire game causing us to make several turnovers,” said Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “This was an aggressive game defensively and Brianna Barron cranked up her game and led the team with 16 points.”

“Our two towers, Conley Niblett and Yvonne Diaz, found foul trouble early but I was extremely proud of their effort as they never slowed down or got less aggressive. This was a great win going in to the holidays.”

Diaz stuck back and offensive rebound to get the Lady Mules’ scoring started. Barron then scored on an in bound play and then picked off a Lopes’ pass and drove coast-to-coast for a lay up. Diaz then drove to hoop from the left wing to put the Lady Mules on top 8-0.

Cassidy Cage finished a fast break to complete the Lady Mules’ 10-0 scoring run. Abernathy made the final hoop of the quarter and the Lady Mules led 10-2 after one quarter.

Abernathy made a pair of free throws to open the second quarter. Valerie Ambriz completed a fast break before Barron went on a six-point scoring run. The Lopes made the final three points of the half and the lady Mules led 18-7 at the intermission.

The Lopes scored the first four points of the second half before Barron finished a break. Niblett made a free throw and on the next trip down the floor Diaz made a pass across the lane to Niblett and she kissed the ball off the glass for two points.

Barron stole an Abernathy in bound pass and quickly scored to put the Lady Mules up 25-11. Hallie Myatt picked a Lope’s pocket and drove the floor for a hoop. Melody Moran scored on an in bound play before the Lopes made the final three points of the period.

The Lady Mules led 29-14 to start the final quarter. Niblett made a half-court pass to Barron breaking down the floor on a break. Barron just kissed the ball off the glass for two points.

Diaz passed the ball back out from the blocks to Myatt camping on the elbow. Myatt hit from the 15 feet. Diaz drove down the lane to give the Lady Mules a 35-16 lead. The Lady Mules finally took their foot off the gas and Abernathy scored eight points. Noa Rojas ended the game with a lay up.

Barron set a fast pace for the Lady Mules with 16 points. Diaz dropped in six points, Myatt added four points and Niblett made three. Cage, Moran, Ambriz and Rojas scored two points each.

The B-team 1 Lady Mules defeated Abernathy 29-15. “This game took an ’all-out’ effort from everyone,” said Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “Abernathy only had five players but they were very aggressive. All our girls had to play hard and they were able to get another win.”

“When we have Laura Chavez, Ab Mendoza and Ricarda Elizalde playing up on the press it is hard for the other team to get the ball down the floor. It was a great job by the entire team.”

Chavez and Elizalde led the Lady Mules with six points each. Madison Lutz, Maddison Price and Mendoza added four points each. Haley Hunt and Nancy Martinez scored two points each and Marki Stearmer chipped in a point.

The Lady Mules are on Christmas break but will be back in action January 6 in Hale Center against the Lady Owls. They will play in the Levelland Loboette Tournament January 9-11. The Lady Mules return home January 13 to face the Friona Maidens.
