L.Mules vs. Frna (12-17-2013)
The Lady Mules traveled to Friona Tuesday evening to play their first
district game of the 2013-2014 season against the Squaws. Both teams seemed to
be a bit timid in their offense in the opening period and it ended in a 10-10
tie.
The Lady Mules opened up their game in the second period and appeared to be
on their way to an easy win but Kendall Barnett nailed a long distance 3-pointer
just prior to the buzzer to cut the Lady Mule lead to 26-23 at the
intermission.
The Squaws could not catch the Lady Mules in the second half and the Lady
Mules were able to add to their lead and defeated the Squaws 50-44.
“We had hoped to give you an L tonight,” said Friona Squaw coach Darrel
Ray. “But it did not work out that way. The Lady Mules played well and we just
could not make up the difference despite having some opportunities.”
Friona scored first with a basket 15 seconds into the game. Both teams hit
a dry spell and McKenna Dunham tied the game with a pair of free throws with
4:44 left in the first period. It was a see-saw battle after that.
The inside game of Dunham and DonAnn Rempe had an answer for ever Squaw
basket. Dunham added a hoop and Rempe made a basket and two free throws.
Adrienne Precure finished a fast break to give the Lady Mules a 10-10 tie at the
quarter break.
“The girls are working very hard to get better every game,” said Lady Mule
coach Jay Gorman. Rempe, Dunham, (Shanice) Rosas and (Reagan) Reynolds are
giving us a much needed inside game.”
“Our passing and court awareness have really improved and getting a win
tonight should really give the girls a boost of confidence.”
Emily Precure and Daniela Diaz both dropped in 3-pointers in the second
quarter as the Lady Mules began to build a lead. Reynolds and Rempe both stuck
back offensive rebounds and Diaz drove to hoop for a lay up.
Dunham added two more baskets as the Lady Mules opened a 26-23 lead at the
half.
Dunham opened the second half scoring with an eight-foot base-line jumper.
A Precure sank a trey from the top of the key and Sadie Sudduth dropped in a
3-pointer from the wing.
Dunham got Rempe the ball on the blocks and she spun and shot over the
Squaw defender for two points. Dunham finished the quarter with a free throw and
the Lady Mules had increased their lead to 37-33.
Rempe and Dunham cleaned up the offensive rebounds in the fourth period and
each one score a basket. Diaz drove nails in the Squaws coffin by making
three-of-four free throws. A Precure also charged the Squaws for fouling as she
made all six free throw attempts in the final period.
Dunham led the Lady Mules in scoring with 13 points and pulled down 11
rebounds. A Precure dropped in 11 points and Rempe added 10. Diaz was close
behind with eight points, E Precure and Sa Sudduth made three points each.
Reynolds chipped in two points.
The Lady Mules hosted the Olton Fillies Friday night before starting their
Christmas break. They will play themselves back into shape in the Lubbock
Caprock Tournament and return to district action December 31 when they travel to
Dimmitt to play the Bobbies.
